Hahaha same. Always wanted a winch and needed one a few times a year, finally got one and have only used it to pull out bushes and trees at our house.

    Would you look at that...

    1. I posted an on-topic, but somewhat unlikely claim. (re: Tundras don't need retrieval points because they don't get stuck and they don't break down. )
    2. Someone challenged me on it. Also joking, but room to interpret it as a serious criticism.(re: Tundras do get stuck. You're just no trying hard enough/don't offroad hardcore like me...)
    3. I "Liked" their post and then posted an acceptance of their objection with good humor.
    4. Followed up with another on-topic post.

...AND THE THREAD STAYED ON TOPIC AND DIDN'T DEVOLVE INTO A CHILDISH EGO BATTLE.

Special thanks to @1UP , @JLS in WA and @Over the LINE for their supporting roles in this production of "How resolve conflict in an online forum like an adult."

They say opinions are like yesterdays. Everybody has one.

Here's the bottom line... Pickup trucks were and are designed to be tools. They're meant to be functional and handy and useful unlike cars. And tow hooks are one of the most important components on the vehicle. Not only do they allow easy recovery of the truck with no fear of damage, but they are more often used to help recover other peoples' vehicles. All 4x4 trucks should have tow hooks standard equipment. Period. People get stuck in sand, mud, snow, or even a wet soccer field on game day. Tow hooks are a must and all these automakers removing them to save a few bucks per $60k truck should be ashamed.

Pretty sure there are 100+ components that are infinitely more important. Removing the tow hooks only affects the truck's performance in very specific and select situations. This kind of ridiculous claim is why the thread is titled as it is and the rage over the lack of hooks has been relegated to asininity. Are tow hooks a useful tool in certain scenarios? Absolutely. Are they "one of the most important components on the vehicle?" FFS, no. They are not remotely close to that. Hyperbole doesn't help your crusade.

Your arguing apples while he is speaking to oranges.

He said 4x4 vehicles, and said the recovery hooks for a 4x4 off road truck is a vital component

Everyone on here defending the lack of recovery points are the reason why auto manufacturers can boldly upcharge you thousands for colorful stitching, an emblem and racing stripes, calling it a "sport package"

Expect better. Demand more for your money.

They are certainly handy, but not vital. It's the exaggeration about how severe a mistake leaving them off is that I am referring to. I think it's a fumble, for sure, but the level of foaming at the mouth is excessive.

Most of y'all still calling them "tow hooks". Pfft...
You're not supposed to use recovery hooks for towing. That's why they're called "recovery hooks".

I hereby declare the opinion of everyone who refers to "tow hooks" in this thread invalid!

    And that's that. Matter resolved!:hattip:

And Toyota officially calls it a tow hook. Your comments are all now null and void.

I guess it could go both ways. Recovery hook makes sense, because you used them for an attach point, for something to pull you. Or tow hook would work also, since the other vehicle would be "towing" you out. So if your the truck being pulled out, it would be called a recovery hook, and if your in the the truck doing the pulling, tow hooks. All I know is this truck doesnt have either.

    Nope.

I did make a mistake a few pages back, said my neighbors new Tacoma TRD or had recovery hooks, upon further inspection, it doesn't.
There are tow hooks under the bumper on the frame.

What you just linked to are tow hooks under the frame, that a tow truck can use to cinch down the truck on a flatbed. It's hit or miss if you can use the tow hooks for recovery, they may be stuffed in many recovery situations.

Recovery hooks are located in an easy to access area of the front bumper, usually not much lower than the front license plate. These are usually found on most 4WD trucks.
Obviously, Toyota chooses to use tow hooks under the frame on some trucks.

I guess it comes down to semantics, I'm not a Toyota truck owner, kind of surprised Toyota uses tow hooks under the frame of their trucks (and apparently nothing at all on the new Tundra) while I'm used to "recovery hooks"

Those familiar with Toyotas are rightly referring to the lack of previously included tow hooks.

Some of us are referring to a lack of appropriate recovery hooks on off-road style trims.

    I see the difference now.

Nonetheless, my post was in jest!

    Nope!

I just had a "Toyota originally included tow hooks, not recovery hooks epiphany"

I've been under the wrong assumption Toyota used to include recovery hooks, like on most 4x4 trucks....my bad!

Depends on how much gas you gotta burn to be in the cool club.
I live in WA state, I'll go get my truck stuck if it means you need to burn a couple hundred dollars in gas!

Also if someone gets stuck in mud or snow up to the low hanging bumber, please video trying to get it out from the front. If you can do it relatively easy without damaging anything, id like to see it, in case it happens to me.

The fact you don't own a 3rd Gen already makes you cool. :poking:

Fastest way to put them to use I have found is to go to a ski resort during a snow storm.

That’s easy. Just run a big strap in the driver’s window, through both holy shit handles, then out the passenger window and hook up out front. Presto, Bob’s your uncle, Bob’s wife is your aunt ; )

Someone mentioned earlier that if you have the "tow mirrors" those are rated for using as tow points

    LOL.

That means I would be helping scumbag hipsters and yuppies get out of snow banks.

I don’t care how much they’ll pay me to help them, I think freezing to death in a snow bank is a pretty good result for them…
