I'm a new member and could use some help regarding chains. Toyota is telling me that I should not put chains on either the front or back wheels of my truck. That doesn't sound right as I can use chains on my wife's Prius.

My father in law tells me that chains can screw up the action of anti-lock brakes and auto skid control, but I'm not looking for those to work as designed while using chains anyways.

I may not want to put chains on the front wheels, but I thought for sure back wheels would be just fine. Toyota is telling me that studded tires or tires with winter rubber is the best option.

Any input regarding both front and rear wheels would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bart

Chains on the rear is all you need - if chains are actually necessary/required.

Chains may not always clear the upper control arms on the front.

I drive on snow four months a year in the mountains. Never needed chains. 4WD and the proper tires is all you need

Although the OP didn't say that's what he's doing, some owners find chains useful in other situations such as Forest Service Roads when hunting, or on ranches.

True, but some highways will not let vehicles proceed unless they are carrying chains. I've driven my whole life without having to put chains on a 4-wheeler, but they are nice to have in some situations off road.
