I did a stint managing a Jason's Deli for a while after I got out of the Army. They brought in Portobello mushrooms as a substitute for meat. If I'm gonna substitute something for meat, it's gonna be another cut of meat.

Mushrooms seem like something that would grow out of a belly button.

I don't like my button touched. It's an "inny" so at least it has that going for it. I had a tiny little hernia right above my belly button crater and the VA was going to fix it. Some retired full bird was the surgeon and he told me that I'd probably lose my belly button. I told him I'd rather not, I've had it my whole life and I don't want to look like freakin' Gumby when I take my shirt off. He wasn't amused. Oh, they were gonna put me on all sorts of blood thinners because of my platelets.

Since it was about a 2 hour drive to the VA hospital, we asked our Congressman if we could get it done closer. The day before I was supposed to get it done, we had to drive up for a pre-op appointment and we were waiting for ever. The receptionist was on the phone and they kept looking at me. Then they called the surgeon in and he was giving me looks. Finally, he came out and said that our Congressman's office had called and said I was allowed to have surgery in Austin. Dude was pissed and said "Take advantage of it because they're going to run out of money sooner or later."

Anyways, I go see a surgeon in Austin and, after he checks out my hernia, I ask him if I'm gonna lose my belly button. He was like "What?! No! Who told you that?!" and told me that I would only need to take an aspirin before the surgery... I kinda wonder if I'd be around if the VA had done my surgery.

I still have my belly button, so that's a win. Just don't talk about piercing it.

I bet if some of these were new in package they'd be worth a pretty penny...
