DIY: Bed Tie-Down Ring Addition

    The bed of most Tundras lack tie-down rings. This mod adds the much needed tie-downs for things like dirt bikes and camping gear. I did not create this mod, actually found in on Tacomaworld and installed these when i had my Tacoma.

    Parts you will need:
    Tools you will need:
    • Step drill bit with a Drill
    • Cut off wheel with an Angle Grinder
    • Vice or Vice Grips
    • T-55 Torx with a ratchet
    Directions
    1. Place the tie-down rings in a vice or clamp them tight in vice grips. It is much easier if they are placed in a vice. If you purchased tie-down rings with a 1/2" diameter hole already, you can skip step 1 and 2.
    2. Use the step drill to open up the holes in all of the tie-down rings to 1/2" diameter. If you purchased tie-down rings with a 1/2" diameter hole already, you can skip step 1 and 2.
    3. Add some black paint of your choosing to the holes that you opened up to avoid rust.
    4. Remove the truck bed retaining bolts. You only need to remove the ones that you plan to add tie-down rings to.
    5. There are two options for this step.
      1. Option 1: Clamp down the washer on the bolt in the vice. Use the grinder with cut off wheel to cut or notch a part of the washer off to the bolt head.
      2. Option 2: Grind down the bolt retention ridges or use a hammer to remove the washer from the bolt.
    6. Place the bolt into the tie-down rings and install them back into the bed of the truck.
    Simple as that you now have additional locations to tie down what you want.

    Csviper knows how to make sean go stir crazy now. Sean you should have seen my bed on my tundra with that plastic bedliner before it went to bedrug. all I can say is alot of sanding and alot of primer/epoxy down to seal it.

    Poured here on the way back from the gym for about 5 mins...not raining now...last few days (during the day) have been beautiful. I've been driving around with some windows down at 730AM, and in the evening.

    Sold my 2016 TRD PRO - Currently in BMW 535d Wagon
    So, the bed of my truck came with what seems like a good quality spray in bed liner and don't feel it is a good idea to attempt to remove any of the bolts. Has anyone used these cargo control rail systems?

    I'm just wondering if there might be issues with installing them in the ruts of the bed, i.e. do they sit up too high? Do I have to pre-drill? Do they handle enough weight to be worth the install?

    I know this is an old thread but I have a couple questions...

    First, I did this in my Tacoma and had a HELL of a time getting one of the bed bolts out. Heat, blaster, etc took me about 2 hours. I don't want to go thru that again.

    In addition, the bed bolts are too close to the center of the bed for me - I want the tie downs closer to bed walls. So, what I'm looking to do is install tie downs in the bed NOT using the bed bolts. Has anyone went this route? I thought about just drill a hole thru the bed, spray some paint to prohibit rust, then bolt/lock nut the tie down on? Seems easy enough which is what is causing me to think I'm missing something.

    Getting a spray in liner soon so I want to make sure I at least drill the holes prior to the liner. I'm told drilling through the spray in liner will void warranty.
