I have a feeling i'm going to hear "can't tell ya much without inspecting where it's coming from" but i figure i'll through it out there.

After i got the lift, drove it a while, and had no issues, i threw it in reverse hard lock left...
LOUD grinding noise. Now, i'm not an avid lift expert and I was afraid to run over my son's head so i didn't ask him to get in the wheel well. Hard lock right...same thing.

I didn't install the lift so i called the guys that did and was told "maybe it's an alignment that is needed. We can move the blah, blah, blah forward and you should be fine" So, i did just that.
They did a little aligning and moved the blah, blah, blah forward and solved the problem.

Moving forward a month...i got wheeling and certainly took some shots, dropped some ledges, and it took more abuse it's seen yet and everything seemed to be tired after the trip but a little squeaky towards the end of the trail.

A couple weeks later i'm backing out of a tight parking spot and had to fully lock the wheel...BOOM. That loud obnoxious noise is back. The work they did was negated by the trail and i'm back in the same boat.

    the questions i have:
    1. what did they do to make the noise go away to begin with and
    2. what might the tires be rubbing that can be trimmed so i'm not back in this boat in the future

There was never a BMC nor a CMC done on the front end due to the offset being only -12. It fit fine until the wheels shifted backwards (i'm assuming)

Sounds like they zeroed out your caster the first time.

NO. Josh and I installed the RCI plates when i was up there

That might be something to look at though. Hadn't thought of the plates. I was assuming the rubbing was coming from the UCAs or even the cab mount but i don't see rub marks on them

    Educate me.....

The term caster sounds familiar as i wasn't able to recall the term they used. Can you explain how that would be affected by dropping ledges. I'm assuming that's what did it because the ledges were steep enough that i scraped my skids on about four of them going way too fast. Heavy drops.

I have the same thing. I'm about to cut my skid plate some.

Caster is what degree your tires lean on a vertical plane IIRC. I would look for some rub marks anywhere in the wheel well, UCA, even some components such as sway bar links.

I've been looking. I haven't seen any. I'm gonna have to look at the links and the skids. That hadn't crossed my mind but i'm gonna check tomorrow

Caster is the backward or forward tilt of the wheel on it's vertical axis. I believe it's adjusted with the steering rack but I'm not an alignment expert.

You're not an expert but any reason why the vertical axis wouldn't want to be zeroed out?

I saw a link last week about how sometimes the aligment isn't actually aligned to 0 in order for the truck to ride properly. Maybe i'm just not mentally equipped enough to process this but it would make sense for things to actually be plumb in order for it to ride properly or else they would have built it differently.

You would normally have a slightly positive caster to improve stability and tracking, but if you are rubbing they might zero it out which would move the wheel slightly toward the rear of the vehicle and help prevent rubbing.

It could be you knocked some shit loose and now your caster is a variable. Ionno. =\

    Agreed
I also hear that grinding when turning hard even when it's not at dead lock if i'm moving quickly in reverse and then hit the brakes. It's almost like something is shifting and the extra weight of the truck when braking makes it hit whatever it's hitting

That doesn't make sense to me either, but I can see how it would improve stability. Bow legged guys are hard to knock over...ask me how I know LOL

You're probably either rubbing on your front plastics or your cab mount. More likely your plastics in reverse. RCI skids won't rub. Did you get an alignment after the lift?

    Brakes, rotors or dust shield?

Could even be your alignment bolts shifting.

If you move the wheels toward the ends of the vehicle you lower your center of gravity. Positive caster also helps straighten the wheel out naturally, so it takes less effort to straighten out after a turn and your vehicle will typically track better at higher speeds.

alignment the day the lift was installed. then alignment another month later after they cut a little more out. Now, remember i never got a BMC nor CMC. It sounds like what law and mike are calling the casters are off again. With the proper alignment it fixes it but i don't want to have to get an alignment everytime i go off road. I can understand that being a good rule of thumb but i'm not interested in spending $100 after i hit pavement. I live on a dirt road and there are potholes everywhere due to the snow and road crew

So, it sounds like the goal is to move the wheels out but the heavy drops might have pushed them back, which if i'm understanding correctly the vehicle rides better with them towards the ends of the truck, which will increase possibility of rubbing.

Am i understanding your statement properly?
