I think he’s comparing his older Sequoia to the new Tundra too.

 

There’s a lot more people who own and post about tundras on Facebook then on this forum. Any truck can get bad mileage in bad conditions. Like cold weather and winter gas. But the fact that guys can get over 20 as many have shows me everything I need to know. That the rated mileage is achievable. Here’s one example of someone’s 70-75mph highway drive.

 

Ok. But if he drove 88 miles in an 1 hr and 38 min that’s not a 70-75 mph drive, more like 50 mph.

 

“Mostly” I should have said. Who knows how much town driving that was.

 

Not to mention current prices. A local dealer has 3 new Tundras for sale, one SR5 TRD sport is on hold for a customer, the other 2 available were an SR5 with a bunch of tech crap and they also have a limited. The SR5 is $57,600 before TT&L, with no dealer mark up, that’s insane, didn’t even ask what the limited cost. You couldn’t save enough on gas in 10 years to offset what someone paid for a pre 2022.

And the subscription service to use remote start on the key FOB...

 

It might not increase , when I traded my 4th gen for my 5th gen my premiums went down because the new truck had a better safety rating .

 

20 mpg = 11.76 l/100km

I can get 12.5 l/100km which is 19 mpg driving 50 mph with the 5.7 liter loaded up not towing.

I want to see 24-25 mpg numbers with this new engine, and loaded up.

 

That’s my point, I recently did a 750 mile trip across the Rockies and got 18.4 for the whole trip, I drove 52 miles to work this morning after a fresh fill up and averaged 18.9, of course these are all highway miles. I was hoping for much better numbers on this 2022, so much so that there would be threads started with titles that read “look how good my fuel mileage is”, which you generally see on forums when a new model that really outperforms a previous model hits the street.

 

Add to that cost of a new battery! Heat from turbo will cook your battery like bacon. Not to mention wires, hoses , etc.

J/K new cars are fun but don't justify it with saving some gas money ... Your wife is smarter than that. lol

 

Weird, I drove two turbo diesels for a combined 300k miles and ever had a issue with battery life, wires, hoses.

 

The biggest benefit to me of the increased mpg is the range when combined with the 32 gallon tank. My commute to work is too short to justify the gas savings but we do road trip once in a while. If the hybrid gets 24-26mpg on actual real world daily driving, combined with the 32 gallon tank that would mean around 800 miles on a full fill up..... Drooool. I agree that prices are crazy though, the cheapest SR5 4X4 Crew I have seen around here is 51k and they are gone within 48 hours.

 

There’s a YouTube video you can look up of a youtuber averaging 24mpg on a highway test. But again. If you want to find reasons to not buy this truck then I would ignore that info.

 

I bet this will pan out. Almost all Ecoboost F150 owners report that it takes as much as 5000 miles for the truck to loosen up and start hitting peak MPG's. I bought my F150 and at 1200 miles on the ODO I moved to Utah. 2300 miles of all highway. I averaged 13.x MPG that trip. Now I don't get below 15 unless I am towing and I even have LT315/70R17 raptor takeoffs.

In the winter my MPG's drop ~1.5MPG like clockwork. With stock tires i would average in the low 18's during the warmer months and then in the winter, mid-16's. Now with the 315/70's I averaged very consistently at 17.2mpg and am now down around 15.5.

So I guess all I am saying is I bet we see a solid uptick by next year once people have put miles on the trucks and get some summertime MPG's under their belts.

 

My truck usually runs at least 2 mpg lower in winter. Depending on temp. Below freezing it might be as much as 4-5 mpg lower.

 

I am looking for reasons to buy it. Better Fuel Economy would be one reason.

It was well over a 1k before I started getting mpg’s over 17 on my 2020. Additionally it was about 5k before I really started getting consistent mpg reading. And this applies to my 2012 Tacoma, my 2017 4Runner, and my wife’s Highlander that were all bought new. It’s going to a while before we get accurate readings…so in essence these numbers we are getting at the moment aren’t worth complaining, sweating over, or comparing over IMHO.

 

Maybe you have to bury your 2022 Tundra balls deep in mud to get the best mileage?

This guy got over 25mpg on a 326 mile trip. He found that around 60-65 mph was the sweet spot and has over 3200 miles on his truck.

I wish I could get the mileage you guys do with the 5.7. Drove from St. Louis to Kansas City yesterday. In St. Louis I was going about 60-65 and was getting 18mpg or so. Got out on hwy 70 and set the cruise at about 75. When we pulled into Kansas City, I was down to 13.8mpg. Speed kills mpgs. I have a 16 pro with 275/70/18 ridge grapplers on it. With the stock tires, I was around 15.5 on this trip.

 

Unfortunately once you approach 70 mph and above you exponentially destroy your gas mileage. These truck handle speed just fine but are HIGHLY inefficient at those speeds. I have no problems getting 17 plus at about 65-68 mph with cruise control. With less hills that number goes up a little. It requires a lot of patience driving at those speeds but it makes a significant difference at the gas pump…

 

After owning 4 of these trucks I will say the quickest way to lose a couple mpg is a leveling kit and LT tires. That reduction increases even more with increased speed, add a little head wind and there’s goes a couple more mpg. If you leave the Tundra stock it will get exactly the fuel economy it’s rated for.

i don’t believe in break in theories, my truck gets the same mileage it did when new after 5,000 miles of driving it. Has been that way with almost every truck I’ve owned. Some trucks just don’t get as good a fuel mileage as other identical trucks, and the shmoooze is to tell them it will get better when it breaks in.

For a full size gas truck that is great mpg.

 

Certainly true, but it’s also true that these two things greatly increase the utility and functionality of the truck for some of us. Exponentially.

 

That's what I thought. I drive like an old man so going 60mph forever is no big deal for me. If the iForce Max gets even 2mpg better that would be amazing.

 

Driving habits will be even more important with the new one IMO. My brother has a Ford, and he always says you “get ECO or you get boost, but never ECO and boost”.

 

Everything's a trade off. The only 1/2 ton I know of that you can lift and put bigger LT tires on and still get 20+ mpg is the GM’s with the 3.0 Duramax. But good luck with that, mine was a nightmare!

That’s why I chose a Tundra this time. Shitty mileage but I’m not repairing the front end every 20k miles.
