Im sure they have people that monitor forums and other social media to get a feel on what their customers and the general public thinks about their vehicles. I know on the gm forum, they have gm reps that answer question from time to time, mosy of the time its just a automated response but im sure they keep up with the feedback.

Good looking truck. A nice set of tow hooks would really set that thing off.

Just got back from the local dealer where I saw a Limited Crewmax in person for the first time. I was happy to see it's not nearly as ugly in person as it is online, in fact I'm sure it will grow on me and others over time. It kind of makes me wish I would have maybe waiting a little longer before buying what I did but then again there will be the initial rush for these that I would definitely let pass anyway. I will rethink the extended warranty and too many accessories on my current 3 week old truck though.

I am hoping it will be less than the new zr2 which is 66k with the new interior , dssv shocks, front and rear lockers, and tow hooks.
I doubt it will tho with some of these lesser trucks hitting in the mid sixties.

Second, actually. The SEMA Desert Chase Tundra was technically first to have 37 meats heheh
But take a look at the video; those tires fit in there so well!

I stand corrected. I'll admit I'm a dumbass, totally forgot about those. I was only thinking of tow hooks that stand out like on some f150s, gas atc trucks and so on. Anyways David from automotive press is saying Toyota will a have option for tow hooks. Just don't know when.

No no, not at all. Believe me I get it. Toyota hides them. Many others make them very prominent and paint them. Meanwhile Toyota hides them almost as well as BMW. However I have used them and know they work. I must admit there is some practicality to making them prominent and highly visible, but Toyota going the other extreme and just totally omitting them with no readily available bolt on location. That is is the source of frustration.

Finally had a chance to drive the new 22 Tundra. I drove a Limited TRD OR with 6.5 ft bed. This is just my opinion so judge for your self when you get behind the wheel. It’s important for me to note that my 1st Gen Tundra is my daily driver with 290k trouble free miles with many off the beaten path adventures. I have been waiting impatiently and full of excitement for the new Tundra. My thoughts on what I felt when I test drove the 22 are:

    1. it felt big, really big. The hood was insanely long and visibility was not good. I don’t know how I can off road this thing. Honestly I couldn’t see much, the salesperson took a long time to pull the truck off the raised platform. I was actually laughing at him… though about how this guy’s never driven a truck in his life. Well to my surprise, when I got behind the wheel I realized that I was overly apprehensive with it as well. No wonder they added all those cameras.
    2. The acceleration was Ok, a bit of lag then it takes off. Definitely sounded good because of the sound they pumped through the speakers. When I reved up the engine with the door a jar hardly any exhaust sound. I’m ok with that.
    3. It drove very smooth, well planted and composed but felt like a boat. Was not snappy, just kind of took it’s time unless you pressed the skinny pedal. Honestly it’s probably because it was the crew cab with 6.5 ft bed. Not sure if the 5.5 ft bed would be any different. Perhaps?
    4. The interior design and finish is amazing. Seats bottoms in front and rear were shorted than I wanted. I got in the 2.5 Gen they had and the bottom seats were longer, the rear seats was visibly longer and more angled, the back seat felt 2”-3” shorter than 2.5 Gen. This was felt immediately. Still plenty of room but my dog may not have as much room laying down with my kids sitting in the back. Center bump in the floor is more prominent than the 2.5 Gen. But the same size bump as my 1st Gen.
    5. I like the exterior design, I would dechrome it fast, it needs a lift though, it looks too low to the ground.
    6. Tow hooks not important because I don’t think it’s an off road rig, it’s too big, visibility out the window is problematic. If you want tow hooks for off road you need to change that low plastic bumper and cut the grill and lower fenders. My opinion is that The Peeps that will off road this beast will modify it for their purpose. With heavy modifications this should become an awesome dependable off roader. As designed Toyota made a great truck for towing and light off road and a True Beast of a all around truck for commuting, long drives purpose and all around use. You don’t need tow hooks unless you are in snow and you need to be pulled out of the ditch, u can’t off road this thing it’s gigantic. I’m very pleased with the new truck and how it drove but it falls short in the off road area when it comes to spatial awareness. Perhaps I’m not used to this size of vehicle. It needs major modifications including steel bumpers front and back including lift for me to take it off road. Approach angle needs improvement.
    7. The large sunroof is awesome. Rear window is awesome, the 14” screen dominated the dash and it’s beautiful but man it’s big and bright at night. I mean I love the screen but I’m driving not watching tv. Toyota wanted to have the biggest screen. It did not need to have the biggest screen. Which means they are competitive with the others. But then my question is why stop there? They could have cared more about making the hood smaller, more off road worthy approach angle, visibility, add stupid tow hooks, why not compete then at all other aspects?
    8. The quality is top notch, it should be as reliable as all the prior Tundras.

So having said that after the test drive I jumped back into my 1st Gen Tundra and it just felt right for me. It felt snappy, turned easier, felt more livelier dare I say with more personality, felt more comfortable and familiar and sounded good. I would have pulled my 1st Gen out of that platform and through the cars parked with agility and assertiveness with one eye closed compared to the salesperson in the 22. My 2000 Tundra felt like a well worn baseball glove, my 1st Gen felt just right with pretty good get up and go even if it’s not as fast as the 22. The last thought as I pulled onto the freeway was it’s too bad she is too old with too many miles because Toyota did a great job with this truck. It’s this sense, this type of feeling and appreciation that Toyota forgot about when they designed the new one…..

Great review, that is a beautiful truck.

It will be difficult to compare to the 1st gen nimbleness. Every older car will be more compact and mechanical. It would be nice to have something like such these days, but the increasing in safety and obesity resulted in ever growing size of automobiles.

The next gen Tacoma will probably be 1 Gen Tundra sized. That would be nice alternative.

Send your comments to David at Automotive Press (YouTube). He’s pretty well connected with Toyota. Even the guy who does the Truck+SUV reviews on YouTube contacts Toyota regarding release of information.

My dad felt the same way going from his gen 1 to my gen 2.5. He didn't like driving mine because it was too big. He just got a gmc this summer and is now used to driving the bigger truck. It is something you get used to pretty quick, I had an adjustment from my Tacoma. In all honesty, the Tacoma is now more comparable with you first gen than the new Tundra is. You may want to check it out when the new one comes out.

My wife doesn't like driving my 2018. I am good with that. I prefer she stick to her Outback.
If my wife is going to want to drive this truck .....8^(

I think my wife has driven my truck twice in the five years I've had it. She says it's too big and only drove it because we were out of town and it was her only option.

Tow hooks, payload, V8 aside, the one review that concerns me the most are the short seats. I looked at '13s prior the 2.5 release and I could never get comfortable in that seat - drove several for at least an hour. The '14 was a big improvement for me and I'm not that tall - 5'11". Clearly need to put my arse in one.

I'm 6'3" and 225lbs and I don't even notice the seat length. It is very comfortable so far at 128 miles. I hear wind noise both in the passenger and driver seat like it is not closed all the way..arrrgg! Rides like a dream compared to my stock 2011 with no rear bounce. No mats really ticks me off but that's life.

Good data point and I wouldn't think much of it if it weren't for my 2nd gen experience. I like the new interior a lot but comfort is probably has to top the list of requirements. To be clear I'm not in the market now. However yoders put dinner on the plate so I would like to continue to represent.
