Power running boards question

How do you get power running boards from the factory? My dealer showed me a truck on order that had power running boards (a $1350 addon) from the factory, not dealer added. My question is, why don't I see that as an option on the toyota site? I don't see any way to add them to a 1794 trim. The brochure says it's an available package but configurator doesn't show it.

 

I'm trying to find some too and don't mind that price tag for the add on

 

Yeah at 1350 it is a well worth it option. Not only are you getting the steps. But there are also controls on the bottom left of steering wheel dash to set the steps to auto, manual out, or turn them off. A nice option of buttons when cleaning the truck or not wanting them to come out. I’ve had amp steps and I feel the factory ones are much more sturdy.

I have the factory ones on my F150 and I believe they are made by AMP. The hinges and running boards look identical. The Toyota ones looks very similar if not the same. I would not recommend these to anyone in a northern climate where salt is an issue and also keeping their truck beyond the warranty period. Theyre a very nice feature and put the step at the perfect height, but they are a problem waiting to happen.

 

I just checked the configurator, and I’m still seeing the running boards and power bed step as an option for $1,350. That’s showing on the Platinum and 1794. What trim are you looking at?

 

They are an option but you are unable to build the 1794 with the TRD off road and the power boards. together. None of the 1794s that are out there (I have looked at dozens of 1794 allocated trucks already built) have the power boards and the TRD package. It is the power boards and advance package or the TRD off road. You might be able to build it with all of the options available but the website builder does not allow you to do so. I am hoping I can add the power boards at some point but I am not sure if you will be able to purchase them separately

 

I'm looking at the 1794 trim on the toyota website configurator. For whatever reason I don't see the option.

This is what I was afraid of, I really want both from the factory, not dealer added if possible.

 

Weird, what region are you in? You can try changing the location to see if that helps. 28801 is a Zip local to me.

 

Well I'll be, sure enough now I see it, and as mentioned I can't add it along with TRD. I guess the configurator does take location into consideration. I'm in the Austin area so not far from where they are building these.

 

I knew you couldn’t do both and assumed it was because OR trucks shouldn’t have powered anything or some such.

 

I just went to the site. The power boards used to be singled out as an option. Now they are included in the advanced package - That is a change for sure , from when they first opened the build option. It is crazy that we can not add the advanced package with TRD off road package or have the power boards as a separate option.

 

Yeah, I just saw it as a single option as well. I guess they haven't figured out how they want the configurator set up yet

 

Just ask ur dealer. My limited build is not possible on the website but dealer was able to get it the way I wanted it with only one issue could not get tow mirrors with OR and sunroof.
U should be able to order the parts for running boards from Toyota and add later

 

If I use my zip they don't show up as an option either. I saw someone post that if you use 24015 zip there are additional options.....and that worked for me several weeks ago....dont know that is still the case. My salesman told me that the PVM system is std on the 17942.

 

Not the electric boards, not an option on the limited.

 

I know it’s not an option on the limited. But if I wanted them bad enough I’m confident that OEM boards purchased from Toyota parts department would fit.

 

wiring would not though, you would need to have the parts department order AMP steps and have those installed

 

I’m hopeful that a empty receptacle will just be hanging off the wiring harness on the limited and lesser trims. Much the way stock fog lights can be added and plugged right in the the harnesses on trims not sold with them. Probably a long shot. I’ll figure it out whenever the truck shows up, far too many unknowns at this point.

 

Where would it be? I can look on mine if it has it

 

I have no clue, will have to find install instructions on OEM boards to see where the harness connected at or if it’s even on the harness of trims other than plat or 1794.

 

There is a switch on the the truck to open them and close them as well, so I doubt that Toyota pre wired them. They have stopped doing they in recent years, cost cutting.

 

I guess I’ll end up going aftermarket, thanks for the info. Aftermarket will probably end up being less expensive anyway. Wish I could have gotten them as an option on limited, I would have bumped up to the platinum but wanted the OR and 1794 starts to push outside what I am willing to spend. so limited without steps was my choice

 

Recently put a set of Amp steps on my 2021 Tundra, they use the factory door switches to activate. Same as they did 15 years ago.

 

I have Amp steps on my 2014, installed them myself.
It isn't that hard.




But I'll throw this out there....

I only got them for my 5' wife since my 2.5" lift, I never step on them.
She uses them when she gets in and out.
She had no problem with the stock steps thinking back on it.

I'll also add, I had fewer parking lot door dents with stock stationary tube steps that came on the truck.
After putting the retracting Amp steps on it, I had several door dents from parking lots.
And that was parking away from everyone else..
The stationary steps seem to prevent other car doors from denting your Tundra.



I had stock steps on my 2005 for 10 years.
Only time I ever got a door dent, was a Walmart cart blew into my rear door on a windy night.
Something to be said for stationary steps, they seem to prevent door dents..



Since I plan to keep my 2014 5 to 7 more years, I'm considering pulling the Amp steps and getting tube steps again..
Just something to consider...

 

dont try to order oem boards after the sale. the cost is usually 2x to 3x the cost of having it installed at factory or PIO. there is a thread in the 2.5 gen where we discussed this same issue of trying to order the classic running boards afterwards. it doesnt come in a single all inclusive kit. you have to piece meal the whole setup from the parts catalog.

the classic running boards "KG" option factory cost was $595. to piece meal the parts came out to around $1500 thru the parts department.

 

I don’t think the “Packages” that Toyota shows on their site are actually “Packages” you order per se, rather just a grouping of the options that are rolling out of the factory. I have the TRD Adv. OR Package (the big one on the SR5 build page), but the sticker itself shows each option listed a la carte. Hence why it changes when change your region, it changes what’s available, colors, etc…It’s gotta be tied to the planned builds / already built trucks somehow. I think it helps the end user parse through what “may” be available in their area, instead of selecting 3 or 4 options, then having it tell you no go.

 

Tried adding power running boards on my 1794 trd off road pkg order too, but my dealer said that it isn't an option and can't install it because it can't be configured with the off road pkg. Not sure what this means but guess I'll have to wait for amp to come out with their version and see if they have a different one for trd off road pkg and non trd off road pkg.

 

I think i’m just going with the TRD steps. My wife and kid will just have to climb! Wife slipped off my power running boards once when they were wet and whacked her shin. She likes that the trd steps are covered with that textured anti-slip coating.

 

BEST thing i can come up with here is 1) toyota lazyness or 2) the system/ button layout/ etc cant handle the load of e locker + running boards.
