I'd love to see somebody real worlding it instead of only seeing the paid promotions or those trying to generate views for it. So many "reviews" on the web of so many products are disingenuous because of a fear of not getting further products to support their youtube channels and the like. The really honest reviewers don't get invited to press events or given vehicles to test and review. Only those who are willing to view them through rose colored lenses are generally given those kinds of opportunities.

 

I only bring up the solar panels on the roof because the Fisker Karma had them, and it was a hybrid. But as pointed out, the math doesn't add up for it to be worth it. Plus, hail damage.

 

That's the dream, man. I'd love to get a similar set up going. With the rural area I live in I think I might be just as happy to have an EV side by side. Just not sure where they are with the tech on those. The EV Ranger comes to mind because I could plate it, enclose the cab, and put a box in the bed to have it work like a trunk. I'd still keep my gas SxS for the fun stuff, but I thing the EV Ranger might do for a basic commuter on days that a motorcycle might be a bit too cold.

Well, there's more info out than last I checked. High power, high torque, but range is again the weak point. 80 miles on a charge for the bigger battery version. Obviously that's best case and likely empty. Still, that's a good single day of riding/use around town. I could live with it, but then I saw the price. If you want the 80 miles it'll cost you $29,999 to start. Build and price with the heater and the absolute cheapest full cab enclosure and it jumps to $34,033.94 in a hurry. Still cheaper than a tesla, but that's in the price range of a decked out Ford Maverick Lariat. If you go with SxS level equipment in the Maverick XL you have at least $10K in savings to put toward fuel and maintenance.

Conclusion: Even at a small vehicle scale electric is just too costly.

No. My comment was serious. We have lots of members here who moved away from Tundras but stuck around and have shared their experiences with the new vehicles. Most of which have been positive with little regret, too. It's a solid community, even if we do bust each other's balls and give each other crap.

 

I agree. No reason to leave. I know a lot of tundra owners that needed better hauling/towing number for their work trucks. That’s the only reason they left. Most were hoping for better numbers on the 2022 and tried waiting as long as they could. To be honest, if Toyota released some information sooner in this botched release they might have waited.

 

I kinda like that. Reminds me of the old Suzuki Samurais or, more recently, the Jeep Renegade. With the power and torque of electric that thing could be an awesome trailerable crawler.



That train of thought and my fried brain leads to the next though. How hard would it be to make the normal kinds of off road mods to an EV? Would it still be as simple as getting bitter tires, wheels, and throwing on a lift?

 

Remote start and turn on all that stuff while it's still plugged in. Then when you leave it's still fully charged.

I was more thinking when heading home after working nights, if you've been out night fishing, etc.

 

They'll probably design it with only 240 volts charging standard, if you want to juice up in a Hurry that will be an added SUBSCRIPTION. Toyota is very late to the full-on EV game and also wants to lead the pack in profit add on's, haha. They will laugh their way to the bank yet not on my money. Who's up?

 

Then you are screwed, but you'd have to have a hell of a commute to need to worry about battery usage day to day.

 

While I understand what you are saying (despite the fact that my commute is only 4 miles), I don't see what's wrong with charging overnight. That's kinda the point.

 

I think a cool feature of the Tacoma concept vehicle is you can use it as battery storage. You can charge at night and use the energy during peak hours to arbitrage the peak vs. off peak electric costs if your utility billing allows this or just use it for emergency generation.

 

You can install the charging station outside, many of them are meant to be weatherproof. Some will attach to the outside of their house, others put it on a pole in the ground.

 

Did you see the guy in Europe that intentionally blew up his model S because he was so pissed off that Tesla wanted to charge him $25,000 for a new battery? We are right at the time now when the first batch of Teslas are getting past their eight year battery warranty.

So are they saying that the first batch of Teslas had a different battery platform that is more expensive than the newer ones coming out?

 

I have no idea. You mention a guy in Europe that blew his up, and my buddy happened to have sent me that video a few days ago. Was just posting it for anyone that likes explosions.

 

Definitely the best looking EV truck design I have seen. Kudos to Toyota engineering and design!!

 

Looks great as shown. Hopefully they can bring it to production without butchering it too much.
