wow hipster truck!! I’m seriously shocked there are people paying over sticker for this over hyped crossover truck. I wrote up earlier in the thread my driving experience and not impressed. Shocking someone would spend $55k-$60k for the base model SR5.

Good on TFl for running it again and showing us things people asked for. Looks like the tow+ doesn't make a huge difference, im better its more of how the truck feels then actual performance between the two. Glad to hear him say the Brake controller was to aggressive when set on 5, kudos to Toyota for fixing that vs the previous gen that was abysmal. 231* on the trans in the winter time isn't great at all, curious to see what it would be on a summer run on a hot day. Probably the reason Toyota does not include a trans temp gauge, which the should.

If your in tow modes and shut the truck off does it revert back to normal drive modes? Or does it recognize the trailer is still attached?

    You just wait
Yeah the trans temp is definitely a let down. I do believe Toyota has gone all in on the fact that the vast majority of people don't tow stuff and they will deal with the very few people who do have issues under warranty because of overheating.

I recall when everyone was saying the new TTv6 would get WORSE mileage towing. Glad to see mileage is improved across the board as well as transmission temps. I noticed on this trip it didn’t down shift as far going down hill thus staying at lower rpms while engine braking in tow +. Weird

and let’s not forget the f150 overheated on this same test lol

Was the temp outside the same 46 degrees when the F150 overheated? I thought they did that on a 90+ degree day.

He said it doesn't keep the tow/haul settings if the ignition is turned off. Even though I don't like that, can't say that I can fault it either considering my previous '17 GMC Denali 2500HD Duramax and my current '21 Titan XD do the same.....

On transmission temp, I'd be real curious as to where it's being measured. Is it on the leaving side going to the cooler in the radiator, on the return line back to the pan or off the torque converter? If it's on the return side going back to the pan (or actually in the pan) then yes, that is slightly concerning. If it's on either of the other two then I'm really not surprised. The fluid temp at the torque converter is typically very high if the TC is locked up.

It will be interesting to see how the transmission temps do when the ambient temperatures are higher as well.

I’m not sure I thought these were always winter drives when new trucks come out.

It seems like this truck is the same as the outgoing tundra, everytime you turn off the truck it goes back to normal mode.
Also, in that video they show the transmission cooler. It's is the same as in the 21, just a different shape and just a little bigger to keep the Temps a little lower. I bet the Temps would really climb if they were shifting more, like going up hill then down and back up again. When I tow in the mountains I can smell the trans, no idea what the temp was but not hot enough for the light to come on.

Couple of things. Ford was towing 10k. Not an 8k load like in the Tundra video.

Ford tow was on the Vail Gauntlet which is 10 miles, not 8 like the Ike.

Lastly it was in the summer (video is 5 months old). So 80 degrees or hotter (guessing here).

I'm not defending Ford in anyway. Just stating the differences.

On a clear day, I can see Seattle from my house.
    Vehicle:
Current RAM 1500 owner waiting for the new Tundra "hybrid."

I always use manual shift mode when climbing or descending long grades. For example, a picture.

    RamCluster.jpg

Nearly at the top of a 7-mile 6% grade on I-5 in the Siskiyou mountains of southern Oregon in a Ram 1500 5.7L not long after I bought the thing.
Was pleased that transmission temp was fine but shocked at the oil temp. I've since remedied that.
Doing 53MPH in 6th gear. I'm using 6th to keep the torque converter locked up to minimize heat load on the transmission.
The Ram shows both current gear (6) and the upper gear limit I set (-6+).
I realise this is not really a fair comparison with the video because I am not towing anything, but just for illustration.

When I had my 2010 Tundra, I used a Scangauge for a digital trans temp, just like in the video, and on this stretch of I-5, the trans temp routinely got to 240.
For folks that tow, I wish manufacturers would give some kind of indication on the gauge cluster when the torque converter is locked.

Thanks, I was waiting for the 22 tundras, but the subscription to have the key fob work feels like a gm move. Plus the reviews about the infotainment system from Tim's pick up and suv talk, remind me that almost every other manufacturer does a better job with electronics

The bums showed 231 degrees trans temp a full minute after cresting the grade, might have been 236 at the crest. Not much difference from the harder working 5.7l. A breif shot of the "new puck" was provided.

With my current truck, I find if I'm towing heavy on an incline, manually downshifting one extra gear helps to drastically lower transmission temps. My truck has good power and rarely requires lower gears in the mountains, but spinning the trans faster pumps the ATF through the cooling system at a higher rate, allowing the transmission to shed more heat.

I wonder if the high-torque, low revs nature of the new 3.4TT might be contributing to the higher trans temps, if you were to manually downshift to 3.5-4k revs, would the trans cool down?

There's little info about TC lockup, what gears it happens, what RPM it happens. Not only the '22 but '21 and earlier. My general rule towing is stay out of the overdrive gears.

On the 12 inch digital instrument cluster you can customize the right side to display a set of three gauges: boost, oil temp, and trans temp.

I’ve seen this in several places, here’s one (at the end of the video at 16:55):

So how many Gen 2.5 transmissions have been destroyed to date from towing heavy and overheating?

What components in the transmission are going to be ruined by a temperature over 220F? Even low grade steel shouldn’t have a problem below 450F. Most silicon rubber seals are good to go with thousands of hours of exposure to around 300F.

So what examples of destroyed Tundra transmissions do we have to worry about?

    Nice.

The lesson here is stop being a poor and buy a well equipped truck if you want to develop an ulcer fretting over transmission temperatures.

We don't know yet. The tranny experts on here keep saying that the failures will not happen until the warranty is up. My truck is at 57,000....so I am about to find out soon. It might be that due to the lack of dedicated tranny coolers on the 19-21 we may start to see failures at 100,000 miles plus...or it might be they will start to fail at 500,000 miles plus(due to no trans cooler). You just need a little more patience.

Just to be clear, almost all vehicles with an automatic transmission have a "transmission cooler". Most are ATF circuit looped through the engine radiator. In most cases, this is cost effective and can help to keep the ATF at an ideal temperature, such as warming up faster.

The external trans cooler the Tundra used to have was very good for towing, it can release a lot of heat.

But, having the ATF loop through the radiator isn't the end of the world.
The truck I have, once was the heaviest towing half-ton in the 2000's, has a radiator integrated transmission cooler. Now that these trucks are very old, their transmissions have been proven extremely reliable. It's rare to see one need replacement or repair, even in excess of 300k miles.

That being said, I'd still prefer an external cooler.

I don't know enough about the new Tundra to speak further on it.

Sounds like a really different setup than what I've seen over the decades

Right, let's get the Platinum with 1320lb payload so we can't tow anything heavy - but we can see the transmission temp :)
