Drank the Stillen CAI kool-aid

I purchased this last week... I got a promo and save a good amount and said Eff it. Read a lot of good reviews. I started this thread because I plan to give detailed feedback on everyday driving, then periodic updates.

I found a couple of videos and threads, my focus is going to be on everyday use feedback and any issues I encounter. Its something I couldn't really find, maybe this will help someone.

65 miles since install, no issues or lights.

Had my Stillen for over a year and a half. Zero issues. It’s nice seeing IATs get to ambient much quicker. Sounds completely stock with normal driving but definitely opens up once you put the hammer down.

 

What's the difference between the Stillen and doing the SABM?

 

SABM simply adds another hole in the fender for the factory box.

Stillen replaces corrugated intake tube for smooth tubing, which increases laminar flow. It also replaces the factory filter with a larger round filter with a lot more surface area. The Stillen also adds an additional intake tube, aside from utilizing the factory one in the fender, that pulls fresh ambient air directly from the front grill area. So it’s literally like a Ram air intake. And last but not least, no cutting involved.

 

What's the real world difference in performance as compared to stock? I would be interested to know.

 

I was thinking of drilling some breather holes to my Pro grill that blocks the front ram air since I have a pre-bag filter cover inside the airbox that protects against dirt and water.

 

Would like opinions on oiled filter vs dry. IIRC, there was a member here who got some dash lights with the oiled filter.

 

I got the dry, cause I didn't want to worry about any oil getting to the MAF sensor cause it is located really close to the air filter.

 

Does it sound good? Some people go for oiled they say it sounds better.

 

It would probably sound louder with the oiled but all I can really hear is my BAMuffler.

 

110% dry. The MAF sensor is way to close to run an oiled filter. Dry has higher flow rate and filters smaller particulates anyway.

 

This system looks relatively new. Wonder if they will get CARB for those of us living in the prison of CA....

That might have been me but I no longer think it was the oiled filter. The check engine light came back on, but instead of cleaning the MAF again I just kept driving normally and it went back off a couple days later.

I never had the light come on with the intake + stock tune, but it came on briefly after getting daptized. No issues since.

 

I made this same basic thing for my x-runner years ago.





You might see slightly cooler inlet temps and a little more engine growl.

 

I'm sad this doesn't fit the 2nd gens. I would have drank the Kool aid too

afe dry upgrade... wasn't a fan of the cheap one they sent.

 

Do you have a part number for the afe filter? Looking at swapping out mine as well.

@fox672 This is what was suggested. 300 miles no codes or issues, just growls

 

First update after 300 miles:
noise isn't bad as everyone already knows. Haven't recorded MPG because it sounds amazing when you mash it, so there's that . I feel my truck likes this CAI. I daily my truck, I notice it's smoother, and got a little more pep in its step.

When I put CAI on my Tacoma it was just noisy and didn't notice anything.

I've been running mine for approximately 18 months/7000 miles.. Definitely no codes, no actual scientific testing but have noticed "improved" drivability. I live in NEPA, and have noticed some hills that required the transmission to downshift, will pull them in the higher gears instead at similar speeds. No wow factor when I floor it, no comment on any mpg gain, because I never cared to do any before and after lol.

I cut a clear lid from a piece of plexiglass. Wanted to be able to inspect the filter without having to remove the lid. Only complaints I have on this system, is this one came from one of the first batches made when it was released. Air box fitment to the fender and the lid fitment were trash. Had to finesse the install. Even one of the nurserts in the box pulled out, epoxied that back in there. Aside from those minor issues, it's fine.

 

Oooooooh mannn I will definitely be doing the clear cover. My shop has 3/8 thick lexan which would make a killer cover. I'll probably make a gasket too. Damn you see what you caused

 

Thanks for the extra info. When I thought about this intake I couldn't find info on anyone who dailyed with this. All I found was people throwing CEL or fussing about the 2 mount bolts. I want actual info. My goal is to have this thread help anyone considering this intake
