Buffalo Trace products are hard to come by here; but I scored an Eagle Rare 10 yesterday. Should go great with a lit cigar and a lit fire pit.

I seen Eagle Rare 10 online for around $90. Is that a high price?

I guess you could say I have a lot of favorites. I collect and drink all kinds of bourbon. Living in bourbon country my whole life has made me appreciate it even more. The wife and I love to take distillery tours and Buffalo Trace is our favorite. This past week, we had the privilege of take a tour there and had a fairly famous tour guide. At least he is a little famous in the bourbon world. If you know who he is, you know.

Here he is with the wife.

    20211201_125008.jpg

Our little collection. This is more of a display cabinet for us. Some of this stuff only comes out around close friends.
    20211208_192018.jpg

I have a good friend that is the master distiller for Barrel Bourbon. He brings me some secret stuff on occasion that I can't talk about much but if you ever see a bottle of their bourbon in the store, grab it up. Its always really good and bottled at barrel proof so go easy with it.

The Hancock's was very underwhelming, it tastes like a 30 dollar bottle but it is usually marked 100 plus. My local store just got their one bottle of Wellers 12 year and has it list for $279, crazy.

Don't get too frustrated about it. They make the stuff 40 miles from my house and we can't find it here either. From my research, Ohio, Texas, and certain parts of Oklahoma get Weller on the regular. Something about the wheated whiskeys. I've got every label of Weller made but only because I've got a good friend that works for a distributor.

Word has it the allocated laws will change in KY in 2022 and it will be easier to pick up the hard to find stuff at the distilleries starting in January. We shall see. If it works out that way, I will be sure to post up.

There are at least 12 bourbon distilleries within an hour of my home and we can't get anything allocated unless you know somebody, stand in line for hours if not days, or pay secondary prices. We all know that the secondary market is insane right now.

I follow a group on FB that keeps up with that kind of thing and this time of year, the lines at the distilleries starts forming hours before they open. And that is with no for sure idea of what they will offer that day. Like you said, it's crazy. It's a good time to be in the whiskey/whisky business.

Did you know there is a reason they spell it different?

Sure do, with an "e" is the American way of spelling it, without is Scottish. Regarding the secondary prices, part of the problem is in the sales chain. For instance this 10 year was at my local store last January, the owners are new and have no clue about bourbon. Their salesperson told them to take nothing less than $500 for it, they sold it for 350, yet the store paid under 100 for the bottle. The distiller doesn't benefit from the mark up , it's the people after the fact that are killing us.

I agree with the supply chain issue. For instance, as much as Pappy is worth, the distillery makes it and takes a loss due to the time they have to store it and the fact that very little sprit isnleft after such a long time in the barrel.(Some 23yr bourbon barrels are basically empty when time to bottle)Their lower tier labels are what make them money.

On the spelling, it has more to do with the still used than than American or Scotch. The scotch does have something to do with it but not entirely.

It's based off the kind of still used to make the whiskey/whisky. Scotch must be made with a pot still and therefore spelled whisky(ie. Maker's Mark). Irish whiskey was typically made with a column still and therefore spelled whiskey(ie Weller or Pappy) Pappy and Weller are the exact same mash bill and stored in the same rickhouse. The only difference is where in the rickhouse and for how long.

Just some useless info from a dummy from bourbon country. Use it as a bar bet or trivia game.

Found them in Manhattan. Sadly I didn’t get them at retail. I typically don’t pay over retail but I’ve been wanting these two for a while now.

Found several liquor stores with some amazing bottles but the their prices were insane! Two had birthday bourbon for $900 each! I’ll pass on that kind of pricing.

Aberlour A'Bunadh, cask strength, matured in Oloroso Sherry casks. A wintertime favorite, and since we're in the midst of our first big winter storm it seemed like a good time to crack it.

Here are my latest finds this week. The Jefferson’s Reserve, Sagamore Rye & The prideful Goat are store picks. One of my local stores got in ten cases of the Makers Mark FAE-02! I have heard good things about it. The smoke wagon just happened to hit the shelf when I stopped in.

Today I got a call on a bottle of EH Taylor Single Barrel Barrel Proof. When I arrived to pay it was just the regular EH Taylor Single Barrel and they were asking $179! I wasn’t about to pay that much over retail. The guy didn’t even know the difference between the barrel proof and regular. Sometimes you can find some great ones and most times you just strike out. I was told the Sagmore Rye is pretty good.

I’ve stopped chasing the bottles that everyone goes nuts over. Honestly my liver can’t possibly keep up with all the really good normal releases that are easy to find as it is.

I can find ER anytime but haven't bought a bottle in a while. There are two that I also see on a regular basis that have never tried, the Bib and Tucker in your picture and Blade and Bow. Any thoughts on either of those two?

The only way I can get a bottle is to hit a store lottery. Happened to do just that with a 10yr the other day; but no, they don't find their way onto shelves here (DFW).
