Who's got pointers and flushin dogs?
What kind of birds do you hunt?
    What's your favorite gear?
Let's see how you set up your hunting riggs as well.

My favorite hunt is for huns, but the dog likes California Quail the most. We've hunted sharptail grouse, huns and pheasant in North Dakota and Montana and quail, huns and pheasant in Eastern Washington.
    20161025_152753.jpg
My favorite gear for a day in the field is a simple Browning strap vest, Filson double tin chaps, Danner 8" Pronghorns and a blaze orange ball cap. I use a 20 ga side-by-side unless it's raining. Some birds hold better in the rain so then I use a 12 ga pump since it's synthetic and all the metal has an all-weather treatment.

This past year a tested out a raised platform in the back of the Tundra. It gave me plenty of room for two dog crates plus easy access to all my gear below.

20161108_215918.jpg This summer I'll replace the platform with a full length drawer system that I designed to be the same height. I just have a few more materials to collect before I start building it.

Nice set up! I live and hunt in Eastern Washington for Pheasant and Quail. My family has a Vizsla and I just put a deposit on one myself. I have a pointing lab pup so I'll see how he does this season as it will be his first. Haven't figured out how I'm going to set my truck up yet.

My dog is a pointing lab too. I got him before I realized that I don't like waterfowl hunting nearly as much as upland. I love that he works close, handles thick brush and cold weather easily and retrieves well, but in some terrain I would save a lot of miles on myself if I had a pointer.

I'm not saying pointers can't hunt close and retrieve. I've seen plenty that do.

I had a friend in North Dakota with a GSP that was 90 lbs lean and about 26 inches tall at the shoulder. He handled thick cattails and brush like a champ, but he ate 9 cups of food a day just to maintain his weight.

When it's all said and done I'll be hunting with this dog for over a decade if I'm lucky so I may as well focus on the things I like about him. After all, he doesn't talk trash about my shooting.

My dogs are primarily duck but will flush. I get them on upland maybe 10 days a year with half kick and shoot. They ride around in my backseat in a sling. Besides a gun box I have no other hunting specific mods. I am a bad shot so I shoot a 12ga. O/U unless I am hunting kick and shoot, then I have an old Stevens 16ga. S/S that I love. I have a game vest from a company called Wing Works that I refer to as an upland assault vest. Overkill but I love it.

Can't go wrong in my opinion with a Vizsla. Haven't had our out hunting in the field yet but have been shooting pigeons at our farm and retrieves great. Be prepared for tons of energy (they will run all day long). Here in North Dakota we do a lot of field hunting geese and ducks so hopefully will get our pup out this fall. As far as set up just have a large wire kennel in the back seat of my crewmax (seats flipped up).

Yea I hear you I got the lab knowing full well that his upland skills might not be the best but he is a great family dog. I'm excited to get him out with the Vizsla this season and with my Vizsla the next season to see how they do.

That's pretty awesome. What kind of dogs ride in those boxes and what kind of birds are you chasing?

It took my lab two or three hunts before he learned that he shouldn't even try keeping up with the Vizsla and 4 GSPs my friends bring along. He just hunts methodically at his own pace in front of me now even when the pointers go streaking by in overdrive.

The pointers only weigh about 45-55 lbs. They can't handle the thick stuff (cattails mainly) like my lab so together they make a pretty good team.

Just raw aluminum on the inside. It fits three shotguns in padded cases. Could get four if I put them in thinner cases. I had a local shop fabricate it for my last truck and had it modified to fit the tundra.

My boy hasn't had a chance to get out in the field yet but at 7 weeks old he already lives to retrieve.

Currently have a Boykin Spaniel. Primarily use him for waterfowl and dove in Texas, but have started to use him for flushing in Kansas on Pheasants. Don't have any dog specific mods to the truck as he normally rides in the cab with me.

I hunt over a golden, yellow lab and a young pointing black lab now. My favorite food bird is quail, most challenging bird is the chukar due to terrain and I really enjoy blue grouse hunting due to the cover. Each dog seems to have a specialty. The golden and lab were waterfowl dogs in their early years (15, 14 now) but the golden became an amazing pheasant dog. I have killed pheasants over him in fields which were just hunted by others :) The yellow can track and flush grouse over 100's of yards in thick cover. The lil black is still a ball of fury but maturing well and likes the grouse and pheasant hunting. I have yet to chase chukar over her. I wear a wingworks vest and shoot a Franchi 12ga o/u. I do not waterfowl hunt anymore, gave it up about 10 years ago. My truck has a a cap on it with a sleeping platform and storage underneath. I can hunt and camp on the fly which is real helpful

That's exactly why I wish the Crewmax was available with a regular length bed.

I love the rear seat leg room, but I think a true 3/4 ton, 4x4 diesel Crewmax with a 6.75' bed and real limited-slip differentials would be the perfect truck for me. I'd drive it 'til the wheels fell off if Toyota made one. The Ram 2500 Megacab is the right idea, but...umm...it's a Ram so I'll stick with what I've got until Toyota figures it out.

How does the Boykin handle the hot Texas dove season? I grew up there (my lab's name is Texas), but never hunted doves until I lived in North Dakota for a few years.

Dove hunting is a lazy man's game, but I treat it like pre-season training for upland. The dog loves all the shooting a retrieves, but even here in Washington State you have watch them close to make sure they don't overheat. I bring a small cooler with ice packs for the dog just in case the shooting gets fast and he gets too hot.

The Boykin handles the heat pretty well. They were breed in South Carolina specifically for southern climates. The hair is long but it is fairly loose, not dense. Still good to watch them and not run them too hard during the early season when it's too hot. Normally only let him get every other bird when it's warm. Have to watch them in the extreme cold when waterfowling though. They are fine for southern waterfowling, but if you deal with a lot of ice, sub freezing temps they won't fair as well as a lab or Chesapeake since its not what they were meant for..

I agree with the longer bed on the Crewmax but I also want locking diff. not just limited slip. I went the non-Tundra route last time to get some equipment Toyota didn't offer but came back for the reliability. When you upland hunt in North Dakota but live in New Orleans, you need a truck that will make it there and back even if the bed is a little short.

I knew the breed was developed in SC (I think it's there official state dog breed), but I didn't realize their long hair wasn't thick like other spaniels.

I bet their color does help them any when they're out in the hot sun, but it would if they were out in the cold.

I have a English setter that I use on mostly pheasants here in Upstate New York. We don't have really many native pheasants around but state does do releases. I get lucky to use my dog at my buddy's preserve where he gets 100's of birds shoot over him a year.

That's great that you can get plenty of shooting over your dog at the preserves in NY.

I've only ever hunted wild birds in North Dakota and Eastern Washington State, but I'm moving to Massachusetts next month where I don't think I'll find any wild birds except maybe Ruffed grouse or Woodcock.

Solitude with the dog for a few days a month is one of my favorite parts of upland hunting. I have free access to over 20,000 acres of private ground and 12,000 acres of prime habitat on BLM land here in Washington. I don't thing that I'll be able to get full days of solitude at a release site out East so I may have to just save my hunting money for one good out-of-state trip to the west or mid-west each year.

I'd really like to try chasing some Ruffs in Maine, but I haven't met anyone that knows anything about it since I've been here.

Massachusetts fish and game says there are Northern Bobwhites in the South East part of the state as well, but I can find anyone that knows about that either.

To top it all off, I was looking forward to dove season opening in a few weeks until I found out that none of the New England states have had a dove season since 2008.

I look forward to dove season like sports fans look forward to preseason games.

I've found huge disappointments all around this state, but I have one more chance to find some upland hunting access. The guy who now owns Elhew Kennels (Bob Wehle's last trainer) lives in the same town I'm in now. He invited me to attend a training session (for the Elhew dogs) at his kennel last time I called him. Maybe he can help me make some connections with land access.

We'll see what happens when I call him this time.

I usually hunt up in the North Maine Woods (http://www.northmainewoods.org/). You pay a few dollars per day but it's where the birds are (and they hold). You could also consider getting a guide until you learn the area a bit.

There's a lot of logging land also not in NMW that's open for hunting. Plum Creek owns a bunch as well as quite a few others.

There's also state owned land open for hunting: http://www.maine.gov/DACF/parks/hunting_fishing/index.shtml

We traditionally stay at Pittston Farm (http://www.pittstonfarm.com/), as it's just outside the NMW gate. Picked up a pop-up camper this year though as I'll be up there quite a bit for the Moose hunt too. We typically hunt the Zone 4 area (http://www.maine.gov/ifw/wildlife/land/wmd/map.htm). But there's a ton of hunt-able land in zones 1-11 plus 18, 19 and 28.

Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife for laws and such: http://www.maine.gov/ifw/

Here are a couple of my Grif at 7 months at her NAVHDA Natural Ability Test. No score... She wouldn't swim for me that day... She was a NA1 up until the water... grrr...

Next shot at NA in less than a month.

Here's two of my griff. She's awesome. 15 months old and this will be her first year hunting. New to the Oregon area so if someone would share dove/quail spots I'd be in your debt!

edit: And when I say spots, I mean an entire 1000 sq mi mountain rage would work. I can scout on my own, but right now I have NO idea.

Griffs are on my short list for my next hunting dog (my wife is not a fan of the massive continuous shedding from my labrador), but I've yet to meet anyone who had one. I'd love to hunt behind a few to see what they're like.

My top 3 are Griffs, Pudelpointers and GSPs.

If the shedding wasn't a factor I'd choose the GSP in a heartbeat since I have a friend with great blood lines and I could get a reasonably equivalent caliber of dog for much less money.

Any recommendations for quality breeders? I don't have enough time to get envolved with NAVHDA, but I like to train closer to that level of dicipline than just to the level of a "meat dog". It makes hunting less stressful and more fun.
