But that would require us to get over our insecurities and realize most of don't need a 1 ton to go to Home Depot to get 5 2x4's

This is true but my experiences with the TTV6 in the ford towing similar loads that I did in my Tundra or with other Truck V8s proved that the V8 gets better Towing FE. Toyota probably found how to get better mileage out of their than the Ford Ecoboost though while towing real world will show us soon.

To be honest, I really don't care about which one gets better mileage towing. My truck is my daily driver and my family vehicle. 95% of the time I'm not towing, I'm more concerned about unloaded mpg because that's how it's driven most of the time.

I respect your opinion but for me we have a daily driver already so this is one of the things I am looking at for long towing trips assuming the payload is high enough.

Regarding the front tow hook issue, I wonder why Toyota didn’t design a robust removable tow hook/tie-down similar to what’s found on the rear of BMW and other fancy sedans? Something frame-mounted and covered by a plastic cover which wouldn’t affect fuel economy.

I also wonder if they didn’t want tow hooks on the front end so end users wouldn't blow up the front ring gear tugging on the cruise side pulling their buddy out of a mud hole in reverse. Especially with the additional torque that the turbo engine (and hybrid) would stress those components.

If towing fuel efficiency is your number one concern, I’d say you’re going to be better off looking elsewhere.

I would be surprised if the 5.7L HEMI could burn as much fuel as a turbocharged engine making similar power at those altitudes with identical trailers and target speeds. The naturally aspirated V8 can’t get enough air to burn that extra fuel, but it also can’t maintain that extra power either.

If you’re a flat lander and that is where you live and operate, the twin turbo setup is not giving you as distinct and advantage.

On the flip side I wonder what we are supposed to hook to if we get stuck and need to be pulled out by the front. From looking at the pics, I don’t really see anything that stands out wouldn’t cause damage yanking on it. I’ve been stuck a time or two trying to pull my boat out of the muddy banks when the water was low. Being pulled out by the back hitch would be out of the question lol.

You are not wrong about the risk of breaking stuff making Toyota OK with no front tow hooks. I know the rear differential housing is beefed up on the iForceMax trucks to handle all the extra twist, but no one said anything about the front being reinforced.

For recovery maybe someone can come up with a frame mounted high strength strap(s) with clevices sewn onto the ends. Just mount it up and tie the ends up so everything is out of the way until you need them. No meant to pull on others, but to recover the truck.

Stopped at Stevenson today to grab some parts for my grille conversion. They had a mesquite 1794 on the lot, just looked it over real quick because I was in a hurry.... its not a bad looking truck. The grille does look like a whale shark, and the front approach angle looked terrible, but the lines are pretty clean. Can't wait to see some with an aftermarket front bumper, a lift and bigger tires. The headlights are sharp, and the interior looks nice. I could see myself in a 25-26 after they have had a few years to work out the kinks. What really caught my eye and had me spending a few more minutes was the lime green trd pro 4 runner next to it... That was a nice looking rig. Not my color, but my wife would totally rock it...

But I always buy 6 2x4's. Too many for the Ridgeline.

I'm sure I'll get used to it, and I am so domestic-averse at this point, I'm sure I'll end up in one. But that aversion to buying a truck from anyone other than Toyota is kind of why I am mildly disappointed in the 3rd gen Tundra. Sorry I guess :notsure:

    My issues are mostly minor:
    • Extremely long front end. There is so much truck in front of the front wheel. I notice it in every picture. I'm not used to it yet.
    • 13/17 to 17/22 falls a little flat after 14 years. I mean, give the 2nd gen the same 10speed and some aluminum body panel weight relief, and I bet it would be very close. Also, in 2036, will the 4th Gen get 21/27? Woooo.
    • Apparently a payload bump of 100-400 lbs depending on trim and options. Again, after 14 years. :facepalm:Really, Toyota? The rest of the world gets Hiluxes, 70 series LCs, Prados, etc.
    • It is vastly more complicated. It's Toyota, so I'm not that worried about it. I don't even expect it to have many issues the first year.
    • Bigger than the 2nd gen with a smaller interior.
    • The word TUNDRA on the front bumper. Like a chin tattoo. "No Ragrets" I guess. Barf.

I'm sure I'll warm up to it. And I bet if I go drive one, I'll really like it. But for now, disappointment. :bananadead:

Excellent point on the BMW! Those are slick, and well thought out. Have actually seen one used, yanking one out of the bar ditch. Worked great!

I think what may be being lost on some of those saying this is non-issue is these are not in fact "tow hooks" . They are properly called "recovery hooks" , "recovery points" or "winch points" I've been forced to make good use of them on 3 of my 4 last vehicles ( Ram, 4Runner & Xterra) and a company Tacoma. I think my current Tundra is the first vehicle I have not made use of them. As Dav123 rightfully points out, sometimes winching from the rear is not practical or safe.

True off road spec'd vehicles rarely don't have these or at least something similar. You won't find Toyota omitting them on the Prado, Land Cruiser, Hilux, etc. Unfortunately, it looks like Toyota went the way of the GX460 when the Prado got the Lexified treatment. Sorry to see Toyota do this to the Tundra. For a $3,100 off road package leaving these out is really unfortunate.

If the truck never leaves the pavement, these are absolutely non-issue.
However, for those that do head off road, recovery hooks might be very important one day. At least a lot more than the 20's , TRD shifter and TRD starter button ever will. It's just one of those things, when you need it, you really need it.

Question...I'm sure many will have an explanation. I have a theory but not sure.

Why is the minimum ground clearance on the 1794 9.4" and the TRD PRO 9.0"?

    What do y'all think?

I had a 2007 Tundra built up with Icons and 35’s and I used my “recovery hooks” alot but now that I’m older(maybe wiser/debatable) I’d rather be pulled back out of something I couldn’t go forward through than forward.

also, the recovery points on my 2018 F-150 where once chrome plated now are rust plated and an eyesore on my front bumper so maybe I’m jaded. Having some recovery points that could be installed when needed might be the way to go for me.

Even as a pavement princess I used mine daily at ski resorts to help stranded vehicles. I think @winchester44 sums it up nicely.

TRD Pro is hybrid so it has a larger rear pumpkin to handle the extra torque. I think the auto trans is beefed up somehow also for the hybrid.

Supplier quality issue on a trim piece is what he said, must be one of those blemished parts you cant see that Toyota is letting go forward. Small issue but things like that are to be expected on a new model.

Absolutely, life is short. Why not. I said off roading not rock crawling. These can be capable over landing vehicles. Check out what others are doing with lift and lockers…. off roading is in full swing these days with all the great aftermarket support from Fox to Icon just to name a few.

I don't know for sure but I haven't heard that it doesn't. Only GM is stupid enough to think that having multiple versions of components is a way to make more money.
