Of course a ‘22 is worth so much more and newer…and more extravagant.

The truck is rated 19 combined. In one particular case driving a truck off the lot at higher then tested speeds uphill someone gets 18.6mpg. And your disappointed? Give it up.

All these trucks are brand new and I haven’t seen an actually mpg test. I have seen guys getting over 21 highway however. Which at least shows the rated mileage is doable. You really want this truck to get horrible mileage and I don’t get it.

In the long video they just release where they are giving in in-depth look at the truck in their garage, they said it's rated at 19 combined and you got 18.6 mpgs so it's right where it's rated at. So I'm curious if his driving did include some city driving and that it wasn't just hwy driving like many people are assuming. I know he was driving from Houston to Wichita Falls, but how much of that was "city" driving and how much hwy? They didn't say anything about it being 3 mpgs under the stated epa hwy mileage so...

We lost the V8 for better MPGs and the real world "gains" from that are underwhelming.

What I want has nothing to do with any of this. The truck is what it is.

If Toyota had spent the last 14 yrs actually buiding something beyond barely "just good enough", we wouldn't have to worry about that. Would we...

There's a lot of reasons the V8 is going away. See: Toyota's announcement this morning about the future of electric within their company. The V8 was simply bad for the environment, and car makers are caring more and more about that by the day whether you like it or not.

The MPGs do not support that. Look at the Yukon AT4 @420hp. It also gets 19mpg for a 6100lb vehicle.

My point is that the ends dont seem to justify the means.

Buy the truck, enjoy it. But don't tell me it's better for the environment when it's mpg numbers are equal to a V8. And the V8 is allowed to have tow hooks at that 19mpg. Good grief how bad will this new trucks mpg be with tow hooks? Apparently bad enough to force Toyota not to equip them.

    Come on man o_O

That's also using premium gas compared to regular. They also have said the v8 had worse emissions. Driven conservatively, I think the ttv6 will be able to get better gas mileage compared to the v8. Normal driving, they will probably be very close.

We don’t know how much was city but some was. And we do know they gained elevation and we do know they averaged 70-75 mph. So near 19 is pretty decent or st least shows the epa isn’t far off

Yeah, but there is still a lot of room for efficiency. Only about 30% of the energy found in gasoline goes into making the truck go forward. If we can find a way to increase that efficiency.

And more hp and more torque and it’s at a much lower rpm. You are purposely leaving that out. This engine is a upgrade on everything. Maybe not durability? But that’s to be seen

You would have had to completely redesign the front end. Maybe 1-2 mpg?

I'm curious if you could possibly remove that plastic piece right below the fog lights and replace it with one that has some holes cut out of it and have the tow hooks poking out there there.

Im thinking if they would have took the 5.7 and made some minor changes or reworked the fuel system and remapped it or whatever, and put a 10 speed in it, they could have got the mpg pretty close to this.

Let me be very clear. I enjoy the debate. This is not personal.

    I have owned 3 Tundras, a 4Runner, and a Tacoma. I LOVE Toyota trucks.

Remember when Top Gear ran a prius around a track and it got worse MPG than the E92 M3?

My point being that to drive a truck as a truck was intended to be driven, your not gaining anything. As a commuter with light foot and no mods, maybe 1-3mpg. But a turbo V8 (improved torque) or NA V8 (as seen in the Ram) get you similar numbers. Hybrid turbo V8, that would of caught the big 3 off guard.

Let me close with 3 questions.

    1. Do you think any of the big 3 sit up at night and worry about the Tundra?

    2. If Toyota is going to try and compete in the big 3's market space (I'd argue last gen stopped at 2015). Shouldn't their all new release rate #1 across the board, for at least 3-6 months?

    3. Do you think Chevy is going to uet again troll the TRD Pro with their more capable off road model within weeks of the Pro release?

As far as tow hooks go, its true, most folks dont use them often but when you need them, you need them. So what do i hook to when i get stuck in the mud getting to my hunting or fishing spot? Not to mention having to lay down and dig thru the mud under the truck trying to find a way to hook on.
Whats next, they do a survey and find out folks dont have flats very often, so will they decide to not put spare tire or jacks in them?

I wonder if they tried that and saw that the gains weren't as much as expected so they jumped to a V6 TT.

I'd listen to a TFL podcast (or anyone else's really) With Sweere explaining that process and the why behind the decision to only offer v6 turbo.

Similar to the decision to only offer one engine the last few years, I suspect: save on manufacturing costs.
