Been registered here for a little over a year, but mainly a lurker. A move halfway across the country last summer prompted me to sell my trusty Tacoma and move into more towing capability with a Tundra!

It's been a wonderful upgrade over the Tacoma, which was wonderful in it's own right:

And here we are, the way I picked her up (2014, Blue Ribbon TRD Offroad with the Limited package) Let the BUILD BEGIN!

First thing I did was add 20" TRD Sport wheels (they had the darker spoke insert coloring) and OEM-style black running boards:

    Thank you!

They are the American Racing AR933 Intake wheels, in 20x9, +18mm offset:

I got them specifically because they resemble the stock "off-road package" wheels, yet with a more aggressive stance. My entire build philosophy is "OEM+"

Wow, what a FANTASTIC looking MR2!! My favorite color by far! The Volk wheels look great! What all had you done to her?

No, that car on the trailer is my 1994 RX-7, shortly after I got it, when it still had the old school RE Amemiya Ad Facer front. It's been since removed and brought back to stock. :)

The Corolla steering wheel is a GREAT upgrade for several reasons:
    • Slightly smaller diameter
    • All functions remain the same as stock - button for button match
      • In particular, the volume controls are now much easier to access, instead of that awkward move your hand has to make with the stock button placement

    • Steering wheel control backlighting is same color as the Tundra

Some basic wiring is required in order to add functionality to the paddle shifters, but it's quite simple.

I love the Corolla steering wheel idea. Was everything else plug and play? I’d assume then just running wires to the console shifter for the paddles?

I bet this forum would love to see a write up and photos of that!

One of these days, I'll try and get an actual tutorial written. It's a relatively simple procedure that requires running a few new wires, and tapping into existing wires.

I got the idea from here (second gen procedure) and the basics are the same with some minor differences since 2nd and 2.5 gen clockspring plugs are different:

    • Pop off the rear plastic covers of both steering wheels.
    • Unplug the Tundra button harness (two connectors)
    • Unplug the Corolla button harness (two connectors)
    • Plug in your Tundra harness to the Corolla wheel
    • Since the Tundra clockspring does not come pre-wired for the additional paddle wires, you have to do the following:
      • De-pin the three wires from the paddle shifters plug in the steering wheel.
        • Three wires coming from the paddles are ground, shift up, shift down
          • Ground wire gets grounded anywhere on the steering wheel metal structure
          • Add the Shift Up pin to an open slot of your clock spring plug
          • Add Shift Down pin to another other open slot of your clock spring.
    • Taking off the lower cover of the steering column
      • On the right side, under the ignition, you expose the "output" plug of the clock-spring.
        • Add two new pigtail wires (only two open slots) (Toyota part number 82998-12870 or 82998-12860)
    • Run those wires under your dash to the center console area, where transmission wiring is.
      • Tap into the Shift Up wire using your favorite electrical wire tap/connector.
      • Tap into the Shift Down wire using your favorite electrical wire tap/connector.

Nice work @TTracer - looks like you were able to retrofit paddle shifters to the stock steering wheel! Did you have any issues wiring them up?

Does your setup use the Tundra airbag unit? Does that fit in the Corolla wheel?

I am not sure if I am overthinking this but I would wonder if the Corolla airbag is the same size/shape to be effective in a Tundra.

It's the Corolla airbag - Tundra's airbag is a different EXTERNAL size and wouldn't fit in the Corolla steering wheel frame.

You're overthinking it - Corollas drivers are the same size/shape as Tundra drivers. :)

Nice but more RX-7 pictures please! I had an 87 Turbo II and regret parting with it. There were a few missed opportunities to get a 3rd gen!

Gotta love the 7s!! How long did you own your TII? In many ways, I think the TIIs are perhaps most under appreciated out of all the generations.

As nice MKIV Supras are well into 6-figure territory these days, it's been nice to see RX-7s starting to get some love by the collector market as well!

I really don't have a lot of good pictures, but this how she looked when I initially got the car:

Make sure you get a steering wheel from a 2014-2019 Corolla, and that it has all the buttons you see in the pictures here. I believe the low-spec cars did not have leather wrapped wheels, or as many functions.

Alright I've been planning this out. I have the steering wheel and everything. I've read the post you linked. A couple questions if anyone can help me out...

On the right side, under the ignition how do I know which pin is for shift up vs. shift down? @busy13b states I'll only have two pins open, and sounds like just plug them into either. I think that was just a detail they skimmed over in this abbreviated summary. Because when I get over to the transmission wiring I need to know which wire I'm splicing into. The other post states pretty clearly that:
    • splice the wire from pin 10 of the spiral cable into the light green wire coming out of pin 1 of the transmission shifter connector
    • splice the wire from pin 9 of the spiral cable into the yellow wire coming out of pin 2 of the transmission shifter connector
I'm sure the proper way for me to do this is to find the wiring diagrams, but I haven't even begun to look into that.

The 2nd gen procedure also seems a little different than what busyb did here. If I'm reading correctly, the corolla steering wheel had a separate connector for the paddle shifters. And we're popping those wires out of that connector and putting the shift up/down into the clock spring inside the steering wheel. Based on these instructions it seems to not matter which pin you plug into. The link to the second gen procedure skips by that discussion altogether. Makes it sound like the 2nd gen had the connectors already for the paddle shifters or something.

Either way, I'll be taking it apart tomorrow to get eyes on everything and maybe I'll solve my problems. Will follow up!

Ultimately, the paddles work this way: when you pull back the paddle, you are actually sending a ground signal to the transmission wiring. The "up shift" and down shift" transmission wires have a 12v switched signal on by default. So when you pull the "up shift" paddle, it grounds the "up shift wire," thereby signaling the transmission ECU to make the up shift.

So to install, think of it this way:

The focus is the three wires for the paddle shifters.

The ground wire is easy, since that gets grounded to the steering wheel itself.

Next, you are simply running the other two wires all the way down to the transmission area, where you ultimately tap into the "up shift" and down shift" wires. In order to get there, you are first going into the clock spring plug at the steering wheel, then out the clock spring output (under the steering column) and then to the shifter area.

Check continuity at your clock spring steering wheel pin to under the steering column pin, so you know that you have the pins matched up correctly.

I promise, I'll get some pictures taken and respond back with wire colors to make it easier to follow.
