Is buying a TRD over rated and can you get a better deal if you build your own. I used to own an old subaru and found more pleasure unbuilding up a forester tab into a forester STI....

I think it's better to build what you want. I really wanted the sunroof for some reason. So, in this region I had to start with a limited as it's the lowest trim level with the sunroof.

I own a 2016 with the TRD package. If I were to do it over again, I wouldn't buy the TRD package. You may wonder why? I'm changing out the coilovers, rear shocks and will powder coat the factory rims, and the flimsy skid plates are not worth the extra money.

Depends on the markup....but in my case, I've found it's cheaper and better to build up. If the markup is 3k, you could get adjustable shocks, UCA's and skid plates that are much better and more durable than stock.

Same here. Unless you plan on keeping your truck stock TRD package is a complete waste of money. I didn't want it when I got my truck, but there was literally no 4x4 double cabs anywhere near me without the package...

It just depends if you like any of the base features that cannot be as easily installed or upgraded.
In Canada we get a sunroof and navigation on the TRD trim and the drop down rear window.

I won't be upgrading much on my upcoming Pro, but I would have just gotten the Pro for the bed stamps, even if I were to upgrade other base options found on it, which over time and due to the influence here will probably happen.

Spend your money as it keeps you happy. Who cares what others think.

I am assuming you are talking about going TRD PRO vs build right? Plain old TRD package is a $100 option...

Yeah, I'm with you. When I purchased my Tundra last year it was with the thought that I wouldn't be doing much with it, so my wife said to get the TRD package. I wasn't going to argue with her about it so we did. 3 months later I thought about how many more years until retirement and came out with less years of work remaining than how many more cars I had planed on buying. To stay on this plan I gave up on buying my next weekend mobile and decide to modify my Tundra. Doing so means nearly all the TRD package was a waste. Oh well ... Live and learn.

I skipped the TRD package for the Platinum for Nut Coolers, Power Mirrors and the Leather. Now I am stuck upgrading everything to TRD but now I can pick and choose what I want and am not stuck with those ugly ass TRD wheels. :)
