Mine still works for 3x press to turn on. Subscription of the app ended 2 months ago.

I purchased a viper alarm for $400 for my wife’s 2020 Rav4. Better security and free remote start from factory fob, and free phone app with remote Start/stop, alarm, lock/unlock, trunk release. Plan on purchasing the same for my truck even though may cost more up front…it’s a better system.

Looks like the new 2022 tundra will not have a remote start feature from the fob, only in the app. That’s how Toyota will force customers pay the subscription. Eliminate the feature completely from the fob, which sucks but if someone drops the subscription the fob will still work the same because it never had the option to remote start in the first place.

This was hashed over for a while in another thread... Here is the closest response that is a "summary" from that thread. My fob remote start still works.

Edit: And should work for another 9 years or so apparently...

Just thinking that the point is probably moot moving forward. If Toyota is issuing fobs without a start feature on a 60k+ 2022. Seems like they will lock new customers into the app subscription if they want remote start from now on.

I'm not on board with paying to use something I already own. I'm looking for options to rip and replace the radio/nav and remote start. Any threads or pointers to tried and true options?

If Toyota was going to charge for the remote start feature, they should have made this clear at the time of vehicle purchase. Charging the customer, after the fact, is kind of backhanded if you ask me.

The Viper setup I had still required an annual subscription. Is that not the case now?

Many say this only applies to the app start. And the key fob will still start the truck with out the app. Some say the opposite. Hard to say who's right

What viper alarm is that? Is the subscription for a smartphone app?

I used to install viper back when they only had key fobs, I hope they're not charging for a key fob

Question is does the truck update and delete that feature after your subscription runs out… I hope not. I understand why the truck turns off for theft reasons but you should be able to disable any of these features permanent if you want. Considering the starter is designed to constantly restart the truck every time you come to a stop it’s kinda a non issue as annoying as it is.

My 2021 1794 ended the one year subscription in October. My key fob continues to work for remote starting. We’ll see when they disable that from some computer in Indonesia.

Man, it’s been ages but it was both a fob and an app. I don’t remember the specifics. That makes sense that fob only wouldn’t have a subscription.

22 DOES remote start from the fob, you just have to pay after the first year

All smart phone based remote start apps require a subscription- compustar, viper, Mycar, etc

meh i have never cared for any oem remote start, they charge to much for a yearly sub ($80 and higher). using a 3rd party remote start (compustar module) and using a 3rd party app (mycarcontrols) that is charging $40 year.

or if you really want high end app controls you can go drone mobile (higher brand of compustar) and you pay upfront for a 5yr plan it comes down to roughly $50 year with geo location and fencing.

i will go this route again with a 2022 since we already have it with our 2018 and my 2014 4runner.

going 3rd party for 2 car @ $80 year vs 1 car @ $80 for toyota's sub, no brainer there

The amount of pushback on this from various sources is fun to watch.

I wonder if Toyota is rethinking their strategy here?

If they eventually make the remote start stay ON after you unlock or open the doors...then paying the $80 a year might be worth it. The way it stands right now, I wouldn't pay the $80 for a "feature" that is implemented so poorly. THAT's my issue with paying the fee. Not the money itself. Fix that issue and I'm down to pay.

Help me understand what the issue is with the engine shutting off when the door is opened or unlocked after the remote start is engaged. I am missing something but I am not sure what.

    - If the engine started remotely I would not want it unlocked until I was there to drive the vehicle
    - I have had 2 vehicles that had remote start both did NOT shut the engine off when unlocking or opening the door. However, I had to get in the vehicle and push the start button.

So what is the difference, You have to push the start button either way. Now maybe you have to push on the brake as well.

    Thanks

The main difference? Incremental wear & tear on your engine. The hardest wear & tear on your engine is at startup. This process is adding in needless wear & tear while other manufacturers simply keep the engine running when the door is opened/unlocked. I would rather Toyota do like other manufacturers and use second push of the button (with the fob inside the vehicle) as the security feature to prevent someone from taking off with the vehicle. It eliminates the need for a second engine startup.

I don't disagree with that rationale and I agree why not do as most if not all other manufactures have done in this scenario.

Not to be argumentative - but isn't the same true for the auto off when you come to a stop light ?

I didn’t take it as argumentative. No worries.

Yes, the same is true for the auto start/stop. However, most cars allow you to turn that off. In my wife’s Acura, that’s the second button I hit every time I drive it (2nd behind the “Start” button.)

I’m not sure if the Tundra has a button to turn that off for your driving session. I assume it will.

I sold an '03 Tundra and bought a 18 Tacoma 4x4 Sport. 1 month later they removed Pandora support from Entune. Took it right off!
At the end of the day, the Tacoma wasn't as comfortable as my old Tundra and I traded it for a beautiful 06 Tundra DC.
I never looked back! (see avatar :))
It wasn't THE reason, but that whole Entune experience helped the process along.
Those 1st gen Tundras are still my favorite all time truck.

Makes sense. It mirrors other manufacturers. Just wish they had done the same with the remote start feature. haha

Last night I disabled the Master Data Consent in the App. Further reading seemed to indicate that if I kept the master consent on, Toyota still gets all the telemetry, MIL, ignition control, etc.

The app told me it would take up to 24 hours to take effect.

As of this morning, my fob-based remote start no longer works. Hypothetically, can the remote start be reactivated via Techstream or Carista?
