Because more isn't better, things cost money, and I'm also not interested in a pickup that rides like a box truck.

Most of the crew cab short bed half tons on the market have payload ratings between 1,700-2,000 lbs. That's just about right. That's also where Toyota's web page says this Tundra is supposed to be.

My current truck is a 12th gen F-150 with 110k miles on it. I'm on my fifth repair in 20k-ish miles. Needless to say, that Toyota build quality is very appealing right now, but I need a truck that can actually haul things and passengers at the same time.

The 3rd gen Tundra is also the only truck that combines a modern power train (TT V6 10 speed) with an improved suspension (multi-link coils). That's also appealing to me.

Again, the Toyota web site says a Limited 4x4 CrewMax has a payload capacity of 1,740 lbs. Where is the truck that has that number on the door sticker? Because I'm just about ready to buy it...

If the desire is to own a Toyota...which I understand...then realize Toyota is extremely conservative in their numbers and you can (and many people do) easily go far beyond their rated capacity (especially with a few upgrades) if you so choose.

    Hardly any do......

At work we have a 2018 F-150, Crew Cab/5.5 Bed, 5.0 engine, Lariat package and it is only 1,550 payload.

Only way you are getting the 1,700 range even in domestics is base models or even 4x2.

I wish It was Toyota doing this, but every single domestic has been for 15 years.

If you need 1,700 pounds or more of payload it is going to have to be a no frills lower trim with the big 3 also.

You can say that about any truck once you have a driver and passenger in it.

1,550 lbs of payload is still 200-300lbs more than the door jam sticker on Tundra Limited and Platinum models. At least with Ford on the XLT trim you can get a Heavy Duty Payload package which brings it up to 2800-2900lbs. No such package exists on the SR5 which would be a comparable trim to the XLT...

Upgraded gears and springs. You can do that to your Tundra too.

Sure. Parts and labor of a Nitro-gear set is going to be $3000-$3500 depending on installer. Add another $1000-1200 for a Deaver or Alcan leaf springs. The heavy duty payload package from Ford is $1,500 from factory with warranty. It's too bad Toyota doesn't offer the same thing and forces you to go aftermarket while spending more money and losing factory warranty.

This doesn't answer your question, but I say don't worry about the door jamb number. If the truck squats too much for your liking beef it up with aftermarket coils. Or airbags, Timbren or Sumospring bumpstops. The truck won't destroy itself if you exceed the door jamb number. Me and many thousands of Yota owners have beefed up the soft factory suspension

Toyota likes soft rear springs stock. The only Yota I've owned that didn't have soft rear springs is the '97 Taco.

The '12 Taco, the '05 Tundra were too soft with a topper, cargo and trailer hooked up so I beefed them up with Hellwig helper springs. The 4Runner V8's I beefed them up with Toytec coilsprings and Firestone airbags to handle trailer tongue weight and cargo.

Yep, you get a RC longbox 2wd. Not very practical in today's world.

Well, it's a completely different suspension setup. Perhaps it distributes weight better, or is lighter in the rear anyway, so it doesn't have a major impact on capabilities. Or, maybe it is just the price to pay for the new suspension style from this manufacturer.

My current tundra has a sticker of 1100 lbs, then subtract 240 for all the sand tubes in the bed, so I can tolerate the ride on these shitty northern Illinois roads, then I get in at 285 and I have enough left over to go get my Christmas tree, lol.

I think the new platinum crew max would be fine for a half ton since it gains enough to offset me getting in and I won’t need the sand with the new coils

I gotta remember to take a pic of the payload sticker from my work truck tonight. It's a 2021 F150 XLT crew cab short box. Probably the closest comparison to an SR5 TRD Off Road.

I was hoping to get around 1600 lbs of payload using the new Tundra as a tow vehicle so I'll be watching this topic very closely. Here's hoping more people post pictures of their door stickers!

    That's odd.

The sticker on my old steel body Ford says the payload capacity is 1,627, and it's an optioned up XLT SuperCrew 4x4 with leather. The 2015+ trucks got upgrades in capacities due to the weight reductions of the trucks themselves.

    It's not that simple.

The F-150 HDPP includes a lot of changes including an upgraded frame.

There are (or at least were) three different grades of frames for the F-150. There's a light frame for the NA V6 and 2.7L trucks, a medium frame for the 3.5L and 5.0L trucks, and a heavy frame for the HDPP trucks.

Obviously, it wouldn't make sense for Toyota to play that game, but the Tundra should be at least competitive with the volume configuration F-150s.

What year is your truck? I asked my father in law what the payload capacity of his 2011 EcoBoost XLT is and he didn't know. I'm curious what year they started putting the stickers in the doors.
