Lug Nuts Over Tightened

Well it has happened to me again.The other day when I was at Dealer having the Exhaust smoking thing checked out I went ahead and had the service done.This time I got lucky enough to get a cut rear tire.So new tire has came in to dealer,they are replacing so doing right thing there.But I was going to take wheel off so I could just hand it to them with no tire machine damage documented LOL and not drive the truck up to dealer.But yep I cant get the lug nuts loose.Last time it happened it took myself and my Dad thats been around 18 wheelers his who life and most of mine.It took a 4 way and a 4ft cheater bar to get them loose.And when they turned loose it sounded like a Shot gun going off.So insted of doing that again.Thursday I am taking truck and asking the service writer to tell me what I am doing wrong and try and make him take them off with a lug wrench in front of service area for all to see.Now this may not be a big deal to some of you but if my wife or me for all that goes Had a flat on the road How would I get it off?Or her?From now on I do all the service work myself.Oh they didnt reset pressures either so I had 47 in front 44 in rear LOL.Toyota service so far for me has Sucked.

 

I know what you are feeling. This just happened recently to my 62 year old mother in laws jeep wrangler. Good thing it was me and the father in law who got to deal with it because she would've never got them off if she had a flat, matter of fact we couldn't get them off either. We ended up having to take it to mechanic who had to cut them off and install new studs.

I will partly blame the North East weather and salted roads but most of the blame is going on whoever worked on the truck last.

I now mention it to the mechanics and will check them when I get home.

 

yep, I had the same thing happen to me ... I took my Tundra back in and told them to loosen the lug nuts (after I broke one of the lug nuts) and watched as they broke one of their master lock lug keys as well as another one of my lug nuts.

 

This happened to me after getting my tires balanced at Goodyear. Good thing I was at home so I could break out my air compressor. I would never have gotten those off on the road. They just hit it with the air compressor till it stops when tightening the lugs. 150 psi easily over tightens lug nuts. I would recommend anyone that had their lug nuts tightened with an air compressor check them now before they get into a bad situation later.

 

So i guess Torque sticks never became a thing? When I worked at Honda back in the late 90's early 2000's that was the first thing i was recommended to buy when i got my impact off the Mac truck. Just grab the blue one and hit the lug nuts. That was good for 80ft lbs i believe...its been a while...But i have had bad service at Toyota dealers myself. One in NC did my first service and never changed the oil..yes it was a 5k interval service. Went back the next day and argued with the service manager and the "Shop Foreman" till i told him to pick any car in the parking lot they just changed the oil on..if it matched mine i would pay for another one with some clean oil this time or they redo the service and fix their problem. He went outside picked one and boom clean oil. my truck was immediately taken back for another 5k service. At 10k that advisor asked why i had two on back to back days and pointed to the tech number and said yeah that guy doesn't work here anymore. Had another dealer here in Oregon rotate my tires and forget to tighten the Rockstar center caps so as i am driving home i start hearing this clunking noise that i couldn't figure out. So i call them tell them i am coming back and want to see there service manager. As i pull out of my driveway it falls off. I called them told them they needed to order a new kit which they did. But when i went to pick it up they played like the tech did tighten them. never went back to that dealer again. I recently marked the tire location on my 35's because after i took them off on a lift to do my front BMC i thought no way they rotate these things...to my surprise they did.

 

And there were a couple guys on here saying you would never need a breaker bar so no use in carrying one.

 

Walmart did same to maxima and ruined rotors. Went back and they claimed no fault.

Recently had them mount andbbalance new tires on maxima and the dud same thing. Again ruined rotors.

New management reimbursed me for the rotor replacement.

Always torque your wheels after some else work on your wheels

I went ahead and broke them loose again.And have taken wheel off.So they will not be able to screw something else up on the truck.

 

I got lucky and had a Tech that done a great job putting the tire on>he didnt scratch wheel at all.Its back on the truck and ready to roll again.

 

I found out they only rotate front to rear and back again unless you pay extra.It would be so hard to X them I guess.I mean they are off the truck already how hard could that be?And no balance unless you pay.I just dont get it.I love the truck but I dont think I would eve buy another Toyota anything.Unless they come out with a Super Duty LOL.We just bought the wife a Mazda CX 5 over a Rav 4 just because of the service we have been getting from Toyota dealers.We have a Mazda3 with 251,000 miles on it figured we would try Mazda again.

 

This is another thing I didn't get. I guess the short answer would be maybe because of directional tires they just go front to back. But again to go back to when i was doing this there was no clear front to back or X. It wasn't documented anywhere unless it was specifically asked for. I left my F250 for a Tacoma due to the death wobble. All of our Toyota's have been amazing! I am not to trusting off the Stealership's though...although my current one seems to do ok but that might be because the service manager and I have a mutual friend. He knows that if I am not happy he will hear about it. My Tundra is only at 17k but its Toyota care will be up next month. I am going to start doing my own basic maintenance and just go get the big stuff done.

 

I gave up a 2012 Ram 3500 Big Horn Dually.I love the Tundra as well.I have stopped pulling my Camper havent been anywhere with it for a few months.Planning a trip now so i may be trading when I get back LOL.Probally not I will have to go somewhere at least once a month to make me do that.We have service from now on I think we paid for that.But I will be working on it myself except for something major.

 

I'll preface this that this is my opinion only but..... Torque sticks suck. Technically, you need to calibrate the pressure of the air supply to the gun & stick you're using. So, if i pick up the blue stick, and put it on my xxx brand impact, I adjust the air supply's psi until i get the torque i need... in this case the 80ftlbs. Whenever i go to use my gun, with the blue stick at this PSI... i'll get 80ftlbs. all well and good until my buddy wants to calibrate it so that he can get that same 80ftlbs with his brand yyy 3/8 impact instead of my 1/2"

I mean, they do limit the torque from an impact gun, but they're nowhere near accurate.
