Payload Stickers?

According to Toyota's web page, nearly all configurations of these trucks are supposed to have 1,600+ pound payload capacities with the volume CrewMax trims being around 1,720-1,820.

Every payload sticker in the wild I've here, on YouTube, and elsewhere shows a payload capacity of 1,395. Why? That 400 pound difference is huge and it makes a big difference.

    What is going on here?

Added packages weigh a lot. Find a bare bones SR5, and maybe it’ll have 1800lb on the door jamb. I have yet to see one as well.

    I don't think that's the explanation here.

According to Toyota's website, the payload capacities for CrewMax 4x4 5.5' trucks are:

    SR5: 1,820 lbs
    Limited: 1,740 lbs

The Limited has a LOT of equipment that a base SR5 does not, and the difference is... 80 lbs.

Where does that other 400 lbs go?

My 2013 4x Sequoia says 1275 & has a funky afterthought sticker that says dealer mods reduced that by 18 lbs.

The TRD OR and Sport packages add weight. Neither trim comes with it by default.

Edit: I’m with you that 400lb seems like a lot of weight for those packages. Seems like it’s more of a difference than the 2nd gen package.

It only explains about 10% of the 400, but I do believe they are using the aluminum TRD pro skid on all TRD packages for 2022.

Are there other skids (fuel tank, etc) in the TRD packages? Does the TRD OR have heavier wheels or bigger tires or heavier suspension components? Added sway bar(s)? This stuff adds up quickly.

Do the trucks we’ve seen door jamb stickers for all have a sunroof? That’s a lot of weight right there.

I bet the 1800lb is with a smaller fuel tank. That’s a big difference, too.

    Just thinking out loud here…

Tires could be a big factor. Because the weight difference is rotational unsprung weight, they might be multiplying the weight difference per tire by a large factor since it has much more impact then weight in the cab or bed.

2.5 gen had a plastic fuel skid - not sure about 3rd gen.

Wheels I think would be lighter if any difference.

I am from Canada and just came from a dealer where I've seen a SR5- TRD OR and a simple SR5, both Crew cab and both with the same payload of 1395lb. Unfortunately I left without taking sticker's pics, but I've seen them both. Hope someone can explain this because It doesn't make sense at all...

I'm also trying to understand the differences between the payload ratings identified by Toyota and the actual payload ratings displayed on the trucks. As others have noted, the Toyota USA website shows 1820 lbs payload capacity for both the SR5 CrewMax 4X4 and the SR5 CrewMax 4X4 TRD Off Road. I'm not sure how you bridge the gap between that rating and Dmon187's door sticker showing 1395 lbs for his SR5 TRD Off Road.

For reference, the Toyota Canada website identifies the payload ratings below for the CrewMax SR5, SR TRD Off Road, Limited and Limited TRD Off Road. They show 1819 lbs for both the SR5 and SR TRD Off Road, which is well off the 1395 lbs you saw on the two trucks.

The website typically shows a theoretical maximum for a 2wd DC SR with no features or add ons.

I don't see the logic in this - and man I was so happy when I saw the listed payloads :). I don't know what to believe and how to clarify, but I need more payload for an upcoming TT.

I was hyped for the Tundra at first , i just orderd a 2022 F150 4x4 Xlt 302a package no sunroof and expecting a payload of 1850 to 1900 with smart scale, 360 cameras, 12 inch sync 4 infotainment, ford copilot 360, a real tailgate step! ,trailer back up assist. I want a truck to pull a tt and also be a nice family ride.

    Toyota screwed this one up

Yeah I mentioned this on another thread with someone who bought one. It doesn’t make sense. When I was pricing it out I looked at all 4 x 4 crewmax with options and it all had a payload about 400 pounds higher like the picture from the website above. If it’s 1300 pounds and you add the driver, that’s only about 1100 pounds payload.

I'm looking forward to seeing whether the Double Cab models will offer more payload. In Canada, the Limited Double Cab does not come with the panoramic roof so that'll be a weight savings over the Limited CrewMax. I like the Limited model as it offers additional creature comforts and tech not found on the SR5 in Canada (e.g. tailgate release bump switch, wireless charging, 14" multimedia screen, 400 watt cargo bed power outlet, power sliding rear window, ventilated front seats, driver seat memory system, Softex seats, memory/electrochromic/power folding mirrors). That said, I'll wait to see what the hybrid models offer for payload before making a final decision.

They quote the absolute bare minimum that about .02% of the trucks they make meet. It has been like this with not only Toyota but every other manufacture for the past 15+ years.

Ford will advertise huge payloads also and only a very small special order truck will come close. Ford F-150 Lariat, King Ranch, Limited, Platinum are only in the 1350-1500 range. The new PowerBoost models in higher trims are in the 1300's.

It is same with travel trailers. They advertise 650 pound TW. You drive it off the lot, not added a single ounce of anything, go get it weighed and it is 800 pounds. Same thing in the 1/2 ton market.

99.8% of trucks made are going to be 200-400 pounds under advertised payload. Go read the big 3 forums and this same conversation is going on.

But I bought this truck as the website said I had 2,100 of payload. So why does my sticker say 1,500 pounds?

I agree with you 100%, but at least there is a logic behind: more equipment and higher trim means lower payload. But in this case the listed payload for an SR5 crew cab with no options is 1819lb and on the same base truck the label is 1395 lb. Where are the 424lb ?- this is my question - or at least to understand which one is wrong - label or spec.

It seems that the payloads on the stickers do not follow any logic, curious about the double cabs and hybrids too. Note that all crew cabs in Canada have the vertical rear window.

I do agree with you also 100%. All of these first allotments are coming with a lot of packages on them.

So let's say they do have a moon roof. With the glass, motors, metal frame I bet that will add 150 pounds or so.

Next the TRD off road package adds different tires, skid plated, different rims, and some more electronics and a few other things. With the tires, skids, and rims I could easily see another 150 pounds of added weight.

Thirdly, most these trucks I have been seeing have the spray in skid liner I think, so about 25 to 40 pounds. Toyota factory bed cover about 50 pounds.

Some have also had steps in them so another hundred pounds.

Add up all of those "options" and that is easily 400+ pounds and I am being conservative.....

The 2 trucks i've seen today SR5 and SR5 OR (spent 1 hour in and around them) - had no extra options. no sunroof, 18" tires, no steps, etc. It seems that payload stickers are the same regardless of the equipment. In my case, base SR5 and the one with OR - both have 1395 lb. Limited trucks with or without sunroof have 1400. Doesn't make sense :)

Payload is the single most important specification for a truck.

I have no use for a half ton pickup that has less payload capacity than a Honda Ridgeline.

Toyota's web page says a CrewMax 4x4 Limited with the 5.5' bed has a payload of 1,740 lbs. Is there a real world truck that shows that on the sticker?

If payload is YOUR biggest concern why shop half tons and ridgelines. Perhaps you’d be less paralyzed by analysis if you took a glance at a GM 2500… just sayin’.

I think the dilemma here is the desire to own a Toyota.

That is what I am up against...I love my '07, but having just acquired a travel trailer I know I am probably over payload wise.

Even looking at the upped numbers for the 2022, I still feel if I were to buy a new truck I would want to be well within the payload limits to the point of not really needing to be concerned at all about it.

Would be so nice if Toyota built a HD truck...maybe by the time I am in a position to buy a new truck, they will have one...fingers crossed but certainly not gonna hold my breath lol.
