I disagree. If you wanna go down that road then put the Pro against the Raptor R. Pro will lose.

To be fair, the Pro is not at the same level as the Raptor. It's inline with a Tremor. So it's not a fair comparison to start, but most foolishly make it anyway since it's the top Tundra trim.

All this obsession of 0-60 times and drag race results makes me laugh. It's a friggen pickup truck for doing the stuff that 95% of truck owners do: road trips with the family, tow a mid size travel trailer or boat, haul some lumber or yard work supplies a few times a year, go hunting and fishing. If you want a race car, buy a race car. If you want a off road race truck, buy a Raptor. If you want to tow and haul big heavy shit, buy a HD truck.

Everyone comparing the 2.5gen to the 3rd gen race times etc should check their dick size at the door. GM, Ford and Dodge all build trucks that will blow the doors off your precious 5.7L.

I was told the 5.3 has more lifter issues than the 6.2 by a guy that works at a chevy dealer. Its probably due to having more 5.3's out in the wild than the 6.2 though.

Not so funny story. We hunted antelope, mule deer, and whitetail in Wyoming just this October. Guy camped close to us had a 2021 Chevy 1500 with the 5.3 and 8k miles on it. He drove it from home which was in northern Maine... 10-15 miles from the border. Yup, he left Wyoming in a brand spanking new 6.2l chevy 1500 ha Lifters crapped out on him in his pretty much brand new 5.3. One of the guys in his group worked at the dealership that sold it to him in Maine and said it was more common with the 5.3's. Again, probably only because they sell so many of that engine.

It was an absolute mess to get back home for them. In WY you have to wait a week before selling a new vehicle to an out of state person. Some law/rule they have. I guess some high up GM guy had to fly out to break that law/rule so they could buy a truck to get home. All the rental companies required they bring a rental back to WY so that wasnt an option. It was the only new rig within like 150miles of us. We were out in a tiny town. They had to use their rental truck to go back and forth to get this taken care of. Did not sound like fun ha

In an apples to apples comparison, I can agree with that. I'm a cynic and would not be surprised if Hybrid vehicles were given a preferential rating or if EV ranges were slightly exaggerated. Because EPA numbers are estimates, they can fudge a bit if they want.

I'm just playing devil's advocate. None of it matters to me because I hope to never have to buy another truck.

I do agree that the Pro is a Tremor competitor. I’m my mind it goes like this:

    TRX/Raptor R
    Raptor/AT4X/ZR2
    TRD Pro/Tremor/Rebel/AT4

I have a buddy who is a gm tech and yeah 5.3 more common, cylinder deactivation to blame he tells me. The newest trucks don't have DOD due to the chip shortage and he has seen the issue go away on those.

Fuelly.com for the 5.7l the sweet spot is 13-16mpg. Toyota Tundra MPG - Actual MPG from 1,565 Toyota Tundra owners (fuelly.com)

Compare to an F150 Ecoboost 3.5l, the sweet spot is 14-19mpg. Ford F-150 MPG - Actual MPG from 3,201 Ford F-150 owners (fuelly.com)

I f'd up in a previous post stating an Ecoboost is 5mpg avg better than a Toyota 5.7l. Not the case according to the links above.

The EPA testing consists of several drive cycles (see the links below) that an operator must follow. This pretty much takes any driving style out of it and tries to cover a wide range of situations. It is certainly not perfect, but if you know how the schedules are driven, then you can start to see how the numbers are arrived at. You can also see how driving style, or even location, can make personal mpg vary quite a lot.

They still have the dfm lifters and hardware, they just arent activated. So they may last longer since their staying in one position, but still may have issues later. If im not mistaken, ive heard of folks that delete the afm with a range or whatever, still have lifter failures, just not as soon as they would had they not deactivated. That being said, im sure there are folks with 200k+ with afm going with no problems.

Fuelly is from people using the vehicles in real world scenarios. It's more relatable for most users. The EPA does tests and then provides an estimate. Fuelly is a compilation of actual MPG from people using the truck. It should reflect a more accurate range if for no other reason than the fact that it is drawing on far more data.

True, fuelly requires a trust that people don't have better things to do with their time than falsify MPGs for a tracking app/site, but keep in mind, one troll can't swing it enough to significantly affect the numbers.
Using solely the EPA numbers means completely trusting government work. You know... the same guys running social security, the postal service, etc.

Pick your poison. Many people look at both just to see if there is a glaring discrepancy. That is all I would use it for.

Who you choose to trust is entirely up to you. I was just sharing perspectives and thought processes to explain why some people would use it. I don't, but I understand why some would.

Serra Toyota in Birmingham has a $5k markup. Don't give your business to them.

They tried to tell me that Tundra 4x4 is hard to get right now, so I countered with an article link explaining that Tundra is getting Toyota's highest resource allocation for 2022 and they are projecting 200,000 units which would be double what they normally make. Salesman hasn't responded back yet, and I doubt he will. These people are clueless.

Your trying to argue a logic response to someone who is giving an excuse as to why he should be able to scam you out of 5k.

He doesn't care. He probably knows everything you stated. His story won't change though. To him,, your a victim of opportunity.

Unfortunately if I were going to buy a GM gas truck right now in a 1/2 ton I would have to factor in the cost of parts and labor to deactivate the displacement on demand of AFM, and replace all the lifters.

If you’re willing to do that a guy or gal should end up with a nearly bulletproof 5.3 or 6.2.

What the EPA has done for you is certify ratings based on driving the truck in a way that 99.9999% of people do not drive like.

Fuelly, to me, has always been more of a "here is what you can actually expect in the real world because most people don't hypermile their vehicles like manufacturers do with the EPA to eke out the absolute best ratings that they can then market to potential customers".

If Fuelly is showing higher numbers then the EPA rating, then yeah, I'd be a little skeptical. But I think it's a far more realistic account of what people are getting in the real world. There is no real incentive to make it look like your truck gets better MPGs than it does. It costs you the same either way.
