For the past 3 years I've sprayed my wifes pathfinder and my (ex) tacoma with Fluid Film.

This year I switched to WoolWax and so far I've done her pathfinder, my 4 runner and I'll probably do my Tundra this weekend. So far I think the WW goes on a little heavier, I think I used more initially than I did with FF. The black color is nice on older vehicles that are starting to show some wear on the undercarriage, makes it look nice and fresh. The Tundra is still new so I'll do it in the clear version.

    I have used
CRC 06026 Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor
On my Boat Engine - It is amazing.

My question - Where specifically are you spraying this on the undercarriage. I am about to purchase a new Tundra. I would like to protect the undercarriage. What is the best way to do this. I would use the CRC. Please keep in mind, I do not have a lift.

    Thanks

There are several videos showing the fluid film being applied. I'm also somewhat worried about hitting all the correct spots, while missing the ones that shouldn't be hit (exhaust, seals, etc). I don't have access to a lift and know it's a messy job, so I just made an appt to have mine sprayed w/ Sta-Bil.

I see you have the cat protection shields, I have some on order myself. Silly question but I assume you did the fluid film before getting those or took them off first ?

Does anyone know if our frames are treated with anything from the factory?

Any Toyota techs/mechanics on here know for certain? I know some manufacturers coat their frames in chemicals or a type of sealant, others do something similar to powder coating, where they run a charge to the frame and then spray it with the opposite charged particles (I.e. the rust inhibitor)?

I layed under my truck with safety glasses. It can get frustrating with clearance but not as messy as I had figured. Near zero over-spray and no dripping onto my sidewalk. Warmed the FF in the oven at 120, and sprayed on a 60 degree day.

How many cans of Fluid Film would it take to coat the bottom of our trucks?

What are the major things to keep in mind when doing so?

avoiding rotors, brakes, exhaust, anything else?

What’s the optimal application temp? Thanks

I used 5 cans, but I did it heavy, moved spare, sprayed in all the internal or boxed in areas with a nozzle through the air vent holes. Spent nearly two hours working at it.

I saw a 1996 Ford Ranger few years back (driven by state park rangers, ha-ha), its frame was treated with a "tar application" 30+ years ago. It spent its all life in humid and salty Cape Cod and had zero frame rust. All untreated Rangers did evaporate here decades ago.

Krown still allows rust to grow over time. Like, Krown and alike are better than nothing, but not the best. Also it's not a one time treatment, you have to pay them every year and leave oily marks on your driveway for a few days after treatment.

So when I've got my new 2019 Tundra I sprayed it myself with Noxudol 1600 (tar-like) and 700 (very agile wax) in cavities. Yes, it was sticky for some time, but now it's mostly cured and dry to touch. Though when the frame is hit by road debris and gets a nick through the tar, Noxudol heals itself over time, which is nice. Done once and forgot about frame rust.

Also the truck is quieter now, that tar seems to cancel a good part of road noise transmitted via the frame.

I think most any of these will work well. I've been using Fluid Film the last 5 years and bar & chain oil the previous 25 on all my vehicles. I apply about 3/4 of a gallon with the air compressor/gun and use a couple of the spray cans with the flexible hose inside the doors, hood and tailgate, the flexible hose really works well in the small drain holes on the doors, gets right up in there for a thorough application. Not sure if the frame comes treated from the factory but I spray the piss out of it! theres also some plastic caps you can remove on the frame for better access to the inside of the frame and don't forget to remove the rubber plugs on the bottom sides of the rockers, all kinds of crevices to be sprayed! You can also get creative and remove bolts in your door pillars and coat those areas too. If you look at the inside of the body panels (underneath the bed) it appears to be coated from the factory but I'd spray those areas as well, let 'er rip! don't be shy with that stuff. Don't be to concerned about coating things that don't need it, it's gonna be all over everything including you! oh, wear a mask, you don't want to be breathing that stuff!

I would avoid the old school tar like applications, plenty of videos out there and I've seen it first hand, it can do more harm than good in the long run by trapping moisture and salt behind the application after it has dried out over the years. But there is a new product out there call Noxudol, it's a petroleum based "tar" like product that's supposed to stay flexible, it looks really good but time will tell.

Whether its oil, FF or WW I would definitely recommend one of those if you live in a salt belt and would like to keep your truck for a long time.

The problems with the tar like applications is that they DO need upkeep, they are not a one and done type product. My guess is that ranger probably had been touched up several time to keep it in such good shape. I've seen vehicles where this stuff gets chipped away and then when it dries out it makes a nice little pocket for water/salt to collect and it goes unnoticed for years while your frame takes on strength characteristics of tinfoil. I'm not saying its a bad product, I've seen vehicles that have lived long with this stuff but it does need to be maintained. In fact the local Noxudol rep offered the first 4 years of "touch ups" for free and then I would pay thereafter, thats why I decided to stay with FF/oil products.

Yeah, it's like oil change at dealer ;)

For me the biggest "pro" for Noxudol over rivals was the rumors that Volvo uses Noxudol/Mercasol for factory treatment. I own a 05 Volvo w/ 266k North Eastern miles on the clock, very little rust. Similar car (year, model, even color) didn't have any rust at all, but I wrapped it around a boulder :( The replacement car, as it seems, has never been washed in winter, which certainly takes toll on metal, even good one.

Anyways, any anti-rust treatment is miles better than no treatment. It pays off.

Is Krown a rare thing in the States? Krown works well in Ontario and Ontario LOVE to spray salt/brine on the roads.

Had my truck sprayed last week with fluid film. I think it is worth having it sprayed with FF or NH-oil or something to keep the salt off the undercarriage.

Anyone use NH oil? Applied the back to black and it did pretty well for my surface rust and generally brown undercarriage. I'm talking very little rust, never lived in a salt state. Just as a way to cover the unsightly brown. I'm looking to reapply again, and wondering if anyone else has any experience here. I see some other posts, but this one seems pretty active.

Have used CRC product x 35 yrs. Used to be called CRC Soft Seal and only marine dealers carried .Buy 2 cheap drop clothe(plastic) use trash bags and blue tape to mask off areas you do not want spayed. WEAR a good carbon filter mask ,when finished leave drop cloths down for 12 hrs, to catch any drips you will not have to retreat unless scratched off . I started using it in mi 70 to treat GM trucks that rusted bottom of doors and wheel lips. NEVER had one rust if treated from new. 34 Ford

I moved to Idaho from California back in August. Brought my Tundra and bought a 4Runner when I got here. I asked the dealer about undercoating and he looked at me like I had two heads, like no one had ever asked him about that. Said he'd have to look into it, last time I heard from him.

Is there a chain that does undercoating, and does a good job?

Had Kings put on my 4R, they said I need to spray them with spray wax to reduce corrosion, I used one of the Turtle Wax versions
Turtle Wax T-477R ICE Spray Wax. Drys clear. I may add fluid film on top, but I think Fluid film will collect dirt rather than repel it.

Never needed extra undercoat in Commiefornia. Anyway, I bought 6 cans of Fluid Film and tried it first on the new snow blower to see how it coated the inside. I put it on thick. Interesting stuff, it leaves a fairly thick oily film which I'm sure will help to keep the snow from sticking. I had to heat my garage up for a few hours to warm things up for testing. Next year I'll do it early.

I'm just not sure how well I can get the underneath of the Tundra and 4R coated. I'll use those drive on stands I guess, to get it up higher. I'd like to just pay someone to do it. I gotta get a new floor jack too.

I did mine with woolwax black about a month ago. No doubt it should work to prevent rust but man was that a PITA not having a lift and sliding around under the truck on a creeper. Don’t forget to wear garbage clothes as well. I also recommend hitting the sheet metal underside of the bed since they like to rust through from underneath. Remove the spare tire to get better access. I chose WW over fluid film mainly due to the odor. WW has its own weird smell it’s just not as bad in IMO.

I have heard this more than once about the fluid film smell. I had my 4runner Pro done when I had it and now my LunaRock pro done. I park it in my heated garage and I don’t smell it. My wife has a better sense in smelling stuff and she has not said anything about the smell. Could be they were driven a little distance before they were parked in the garage.

Fluid Film smells like sour milk. Lasts for about a week or so then disappears.

Hey Russ can I ask where in PA you are located? I don’t want to get into this myself and all the places I call want to do a rustproofing system (Ziebart and Linex each have their own) which have seen some pretty bad things about. Looks like the closest to me is Krown in York but that’s 2 hours away.

No problem Dennis, Do you know schuylkill haven pa? I always mention this place also every seems to know it or been there. The Big Cabela hunting store on 78? The guy that does it also does detailing. He is really busy doing fluid film. The price is right.
