Undercarriage Treatment?! Yay or Nay?! Pros & Cons?!

I’ve been looking at treating the powertrain/undercarriage on my truck with some sort of treatment to keep it looking clean, fresh and rust free, plan is to keep it for a long time.

I used the search feature, but couldn't find the answers i was looking for;

What are the pros & cons of doing an undercarriage treatment? My plan is to stay away from the tar applications, more so looking at the Corrosion Free Rust Cure 3000, and a simple spray gun to apply it.

Other than the $65/gallon price, and my time, is there any reason to NOT do this treatment? I live in an area that has the occasional salted roads, with some snow from time to time, but nothing crazy.

Do it and you'll be happy. I do use krown every year and no rust.

 

Any particular reasons you use Krown over other brands (mainly Corrosion Free Rust Cure, because that’s the one I’ve seen mentioned most on the forum)?

 

Rustoleum Flat Black. One can in the spring, another in the fall. Underside looks fantastic. Any repair shops used (tire shops mostly) always comment how nice it is to work on a clean, rust free ride. FWIW, I’m up the Maine way. Salt is an issue. Maintenance is the key.

Boeshield T9 is a fantastic product. It’s a commercial derivative of what we use at work on aircraft. I just sprayed most of the entire underneath with about 1/4 can.

double bonus works fantastic on cast iron tools like table saws and bandsaws.

Takes few hours to apply. I recommend in the street after a bath and let it dry overnight.

 

First time Corrosion Free user here. I bought the 4L tub and cheap gun, $100cad shipped.

I did the underside, didn't do inside doors or holes etc, that the more expensive wand guns do.

It went on easy, no mess. Didn't take long. I avoided high heat areas, routers, brakes, muffler, exhaust. Any that got on there, burned off after a week or so.

It has since snowed and I've gone mudding. There is still a layer on there when I test it with my finger.

3 spray cans of fluid film shipped to your door will do great and cost about $40

 

One gallon of fluid film at advance auto and $20 for a spray gun and 2 quart bottles from Amazon. Did the 4rlRunmer and Tundra with some left.

 

I bought a gallon jug of fluid film and a spray gun on Amazon. I hook the spray gun to my compressor, did one application on my taco (when I owned it) and one application on the tundra and still have half a gallon left. So I’ll be good for another 2 years.

 

Had the 4runner done and now had the tundra done for the first year. Fluid film.

 

I've got an appt for Ziebart this week. I've done a bunch of research, some people love it, others hate it. Seems everyone here prefers the FF, is it really that much better?!? I've got a gallon of FF that I was gonna send back to Amazon...time is an issue for me.

 

Thanks for all the info. A lot of good answers. I’m leaning towards the Corrosion Free stuff with their premium applicator gun so I can get inside panels, doors, tailgates, etc.

Another vote for Fluid Film. This will be my second winter with it… looks new under there and can you can power wash it off if you had to.

 

See, any oil spray base seems work.

Curious, Do the Tundra frames have a chemical coating on it from the factory?

 

I started using crown over 35 years ago and it definitely works but drips all over the driveway specially the first few days after application and when the weather warms up out side.
Crown does a number to the weather stripping around the doors some vehicles more than others.

I switched over to corrosion free several years ago and it definitely works better than the crown doesn’t drip and stays on better. Any doesn’t affect the rubber weather stripping.

Some others work as well and any is better than not doing it at all.

There is a study done by the military and it rated quite a few of the popular products available and corrosion free has the top rating. Crown I think was 65% protection and corrosion free was 90 or 95%.

I'm a big fan of Fluid Film but this guy claims that PB Blaster's new product works even better. I'd like to find it but it's hard to find in person.

Been using Fluid Film with no problems. I will probably try Woolwax when the FF runs out. Been reading good things about WW.

 

I was able to pick up a case (6 cans) from Home Depot by checking on their app for a few days. According to the video you linked, he believes 6 cans would be plenty for an application to one truck/tundra.

I think woolwax is a forum sponsor and offers a coupon when you purchase directly off their website. Was leaning towards them but ultimately decided against doing it myself due to not having the space or access to a lift. They do have a link to applicators on their web site so may pay to have my truck done sometime in the future.

 

For the past 3 years I've sprayed my wifes pathfinder and my (ex) tacoma with Fluid Film.

This year I switched to WoolWax and so far I've done her pathfinder, my 4 runner and I'll probably do my Tundra this weekend. So far I think the WW goes on a little heavier, I think I used more initially than I did with FF. The black color is nice on older vehicles that are starting to show some wear on the undercarriage, makes it look nice and fresh. The Tundra is still new so I'll do it in the clear version.
