2022 Tundra vs 2022 F-150 opinion?

I just bought a 2021 F150 Platinum Hybrid as I got a great private party deal and it will hold me over until the Tundra Capstone Hybrid is available. Some thoughts based on the following trucks I've owned:

2008 Tacoma TRD Off Road
2015 4runner Ltd.
2016 GMC Sierra SLT
2021 Ford F150 Platinum Hybrid

The Tacoma and the 4runner were absolutely bulletproof and had zero issues. They always felt a little dated and a little plasticy in the interior features and technology, but rock solid reliability and unreal resale value. Essentially drove them each for years with almost zero depreciation after buying each one a few years old from a private party.

The GMC was really nice but by 15,000 miles was starting to rattle and just not feel well put together which gave me real concerns about build quality. Really comfortable, great V8 power, etc. but I didn't trust it at all long-term and sold it.

I wasn't planning on buying the F150 as I was just going to keep my 4runner until the Capstone hits the market, but I came across a private party super low mileage F150 hybrid and decided to pull the trigger and then use it to trade on the Tundra and offset sales tax, etc. The F150 is getting fantastic gas mileage 22-25 mpg in the city and is powerful, luxurious and full of really awesome technology. It's certainly a better truck the the Sierra I had in every possible way. This said, with only 3800 miles on it so far, there are some little things that would make me very hesitant to own it out of warranty. The transmission seems to hunt at times, the switching between electric, hybrid and full power seems to hesitate and there is a rattle in the rear sliding window. Are they deal breakers? No. But if the Capstone delivers on the rumors of Lexus level interior and tech with Tundra level reliability, resale, and utility, there is no way I'm not trading the F150 in a heartbeat. Frankly, as long as the Capstone or even Platinum Hybrid is close enough, the F150 is gone. Great truck, but ultimately, not a Tundra.

Having owned a lot of Toyota and Lexus vehicles over the years in my home and relative's homes, I simply haven't found any manufacturer that does a better all around job.

 

I'd buy a Chevy/GMC before I'd buy a Ford.
I'd buy a Ford before I bought a Dodge.
I'd buy another Toyota, it would be my 4th in a row, before I'd buy anything else.

Personal preference.

 

I know it's hard to justify anything but the Ford. They are a better truck on paper and honestly a great package. I went through the exact same process in 2016, except I didn't have the option of an all new Tundra. I went with the Ford and now I'm back at Toyota. The only way I would buy a Ford again is if I was keeping it for a short term. Long term ownership is not a wise decision, especially if you come from a Toyota ownership background.

 

That was my experience in 2013. I had no 'deal breaker' issues, but I had more than a few small (and one or two moderate) issues. More than that, though, the two local dealerships were just plain ridiculous about warranty coverage. They 'couldn't fix' my driver's rear door latch (and when you own a SuperCab, that's not a small issue, as the front door latches ONTO the rear door) and by the third rear defrost window replacement they told me "This'll be the last time we do this."

I told them "Uh, you'll do it until it's out of warranty, because you SOLD me the truck and it has issues."

That's the reason why I own a Tundra now. Maybe not the fastest, or the highest towing rating, but unlike most other trucks, I actually TRUST my Tundra.

 

The "good ole' boys" I've known, who'll tell ya' how they've "never had many problems" with their newer Fords, are always the ones who unload 'em after a couple years! These are usually the same guys, who'll tell me how "they'd never buy no 'ferrin' vehicle"; as they climb into their brand new Buick Envision SUV... built in CHINA.

 

Couldn't agree more. Im 'downgrading' from an F150 Platinum to a Tundra Limited. It has a few less bells and whistles, but Ive lived without a lot of that up until I had my F150. I can get by without a couple of the nice extras and I know that I'm back behind the wheel of a vehicle that simply works better.

The worst part of all this? My wife told me from day 1 that she hated the truck and hated Ford and now I have to either defend the Ford or admit to my wife that she was right. Not a good spot to be in!

 

On the contrary you are in a great position. You need to give her one once in awhile and this is an easy one... so collect some points... and you get a Tundra, too. Win-win!

 

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Pretty much comparing the F150 XLT to Tundra sr5 CC SB. I love the Ram but you can't get Adaptive cruise etc at the same price point. Chevy gmc interior has a gotten worse than the 2011 edition and no adaptive cruise.

If you love V8 you have to get the Ford. Toyota has released some towing stats but we'll have to see the trucks themselves before we know really what it's numbers are. Styling is personal. I'll wait to see the Tundra in person, but it looks GM/ Hummer like to me and the goatee grille is ugly in pictures.

Having been a Toyota/Honda guy for 30 years, leaving the fold of confidence with assured starts, and completed trips will be hard. But my decision timeframe is getting shorter and shorter.

I think Tundra is more focused on a limited number of consumer types. Ford is trying to appeal to many many more.

Availability, is a big win for Ford right now.

 

The only reason why GM is not a contender for me is the 24 gallon fuel tank with no option for a higher capacity fuel tank. 24 gallons is not practical if you're going to tow longer distances.

 

This is simply not true. Look at all the class action lawsuits against Ford, look at their 10-speed issues, look at GM’s lifter problem. Look at all the issues with Ram trucks over the years. Those companies have issues at a higher rate, not just because they make more trucks. I guess if you’re looking to only get 60-100k (or even less) out of your vehicle before it starts nagging you with issues, yeah pick any one you want.

But if you want trouble free ownership with only basic maintenance, the Tundra is far and away your best choice. The 2nd gen, anyway. 3rd gen remains to be proven, although I don’t think it will be significantly less reliable than the long-running 2nd gen. The vast majority of parts in it, including the TTv6, have been is use for years in other platforms.

 

Sorry if someone else mentioned it, but I wouldn't buy any truck right now if you have the option to wait. Give Toyota a year (or maybe longer, depending how 2022 goes) to get some trucks built and delivered to dealer lots.

 

I like the new Tundra and appreciate the new tech and improved MPG. Of course I need to see them in person and hear some honest reviews and owner experiences. One thing I will agree with is that the front grill seems really ugly in photos. Not sure which brand started this trend of huge battering ram looking grilles. But they are all pretty ugly, IMO. One way to get around this is to get a body color that doesn't contrast so much... like Mag Gray so the grill disappears. The other thing that might keep me on the fence for awhile is I that I really don't need a full size truck right now and am waiting to see the next gen Tacomas. The current gen Tacomas are OK but not different enough to get me out of my 2009 especially since I have addressed some of the deficits such as remote start, seat heaters, and a Pioneer CarPlay/Android Auto head unit.

 

Bought a new 2001 F250 Lariat and put 37,000 miles on it in 10 years. It had a great heater......and it often road nicely on a flatbed back to the dealership.

That is/was the last penny Ferd will ever see from me! I see all ferd trucks in an unfavorable light because they really do suck

 

I truly feel for the guys who are trying to buy now or within the next year. What a mess. If I absolutely needed the utility of a truck, I would be looking for a cheaper 200k-mile early 2nd gen Tundra to hold me over until the market mellows out a bit.

 

If you think the market is ever going to return to normal, this thought process might need to be adjusted.

The market has been forced into artificially high demand due to factors outside its control. All of the automakers are dealing with the same issues. So they're forced to act in concert: low inventory that doesn't meet backed-up demand but allows them to sell at high prices. What happens when those factors are removed? As time (and this current model) goes on, that 16% figure they mention is only going to grow. And once the factors that caused this market in the first place are removed, factors that none of the automakers can control (such as supply chain issues), they will begin competing in a more normal way. Will it go back 100% to a pre-2020 model? Probably not. But all it takes is one automaker to say, "you know what people miss? INVENTORY. I bet if we're the first to refill our dealer lots with options, we'll beat everyone in sales for the next two quarters." Remember, automakers are in competition with each other, and once the limiting factors are removed, there will be an adjustment.

Exactly. This is how I have always bought all my cars and trucks. I build them out on a configurator then find one in inventory somewhere as close to that as possible. Dealers are in a bit of a bind now with low inventory that has allowed higher per unit profit. It may take some encouragement to get them to go back to the old ways... less per unit profit, but higher volume... even when the chip and other parts backlogs clear.

On a related note, I just paid $27 at WalMart for a jug of Mobil One 5W-30 for my Tacoma. Wasn't long ago it was only ~$22 there.

 

Another factor is the overall economic conditions. People in the US are still flush with handouts in the form of stimulus, and interest rates are still artificially low.

There’s a correction coming, and a lot of these economically illiterate imbeciles who have been living large on handouts and low cost loans are going to get CRUSHED.

When that happens inventory will build up on dealer lots whether the dealers and manufacturers want it to or not.

I’ve never own a vehicle that are not Japanese…I have a Mazda RX8, 2 Lexus and a tundra, so don’t throw me under them domestic junks.

Then let her gloat for awhile or something, and you get a sweet truck, and maybe some other stuff for throwing a bone her way. (Figurative. lol)

I really love my Tundra and want another one.. but it is getting a little harder with my local dealers asking for MSRP plus high cost dealer options.

Found a Ford dealer that is taking orders for 3% under invoice plus any rebates. I priced out a LOADED Lariat Powerboost (Hybrid) with virtually every option sans moonroof and hitch scale. Even put blue cruise or whatever that is on it. Sticker is like 70, but with the $800 in rebates that are available to me, the sale price is around 62k. If i found a way to get one of those PCO things on the mail, even better. Way more features than the Tundra for less money out the door. I've had two Ford's. One was amazingly reliable. The other, not so much.

I'll probably chicken out on the Ford and order my 22' Tundra Platinum, but it's not an easy decision.

I'm waiting until 2023. I think by then we'll be at a point where reduction returns closer to normal, dealers work through the backlog of retail orders and we'll be able to start seeing widespread pricing at or below MSRP.

Features wise, Ford is better than Toyota for the same market sale price (not MSRP). I'd trust a 2nd year Toyota more than a 2nd year Ford though.

 

I've seen another video from the guy that got his new Tundra stuck in the mud and his computer is showing 21+ and he shows where if you really try to keep it out of the boost, he is getting 24+ at times. He does say that you have to really work to keep it out of boost to get that, but 21+ for normal driving is good enough in my book.

 

things must be different across the country all our local car dealers lots are full. I Put a deposit down yesterday and they had the same 4 2021 tundras that were on the lot a month ago.

 

What part of the country or city you live in?

 

My local Toyota dealership probably has 10-20 new cars on it and is currently being used as an Amazon van parking lot. They probably have 40-50 Amazon vans parked on the lot right now.

 

My local lots are definitely not full, however the closest Toyota dealer has had 11 2021 Tundra's on the lot for quite some time now. The next closest has 2 and the one after that 7. Again, all have been sitting.

 

Solution?, Go get a personal loan then find and buy a 2021 Tundra and never look back.
