My grandfather used to say that "tip" stood for "to insure promptness". It should absolutely reflect the quality of the service.

Yeah, hes just trying to save the situation but ignoring the reason I canceled at that point. I wasn't mad about it but just didn't want a back and forth discussion. If they brought the food out on time I'd eat it and be happy.

If that restaurant had a manager that was worth a crap, he would have fully refunded at least you and your wife's meal for the inconvenience.

Yeah probably. Like I said though I don't like eating for free. I didn't have a problem paying for what we did get on time. The sushi she got was pretty good. The sad part is that place wasn't even busy. They were overstaffed for the number of customers they had. (My party and 3 tables inside, about 4 people at the bar). I counted 2 bartenders, the hostes, 4 waiters.

Gramps was right, history of it is "To Insure Prompt Service" and back in the day was paid up front of service.

I'm generous with tips, grew up in restaurant business so I know how things work. But we went to a chain restaurant the other night, never a favorite of mine but we went. Waitress got both our orders wrong, little things but still but what was bad she knew it was wrong and brought it to us anyway. Made her apologies and blamed it on the table of 14 that was sitting there. Turns out she wasn't the one waiting on that table and they were JUST seated. Top it off, she came around later asked if we wanted anything. I asked for more coffee, she'll be right back. I prepped my coffee mug with sweetener and cream, 10 minutes later she brings the check. "Have a good night"...yeah, you're right, I didn't really need that second cup of joe...
So I tipped accordingly...less than 10%. if she's not going to make the effort why should I?

I have the same mentality but I only seem to go out to eat with soft hearted people who bitch at me if the service is bad and I want to tip less than 20%.

A few years ago, we were out with my in-laws. We got VERY bad service and my FIL left a nickel on the table. As we were walking out, the waitress called out, "Sir, you left your nickel on the table!" My FIL promptly replied loudly, "That's your tip. You EARNED it!"

When online retailers say that they're having a sale but what they're doing is selling at regular price and putting a crossed out inflated price next to it.

Out of curiosity I looked at a turbo replacement kit for mt GTI. Its a mildly better turbo, injectors, larger maf, and software. Regular price is $1650, sale price is $1650 with a slashed out "regular price $2400" beside it.

If I had the spare time I would document that sort of thing and send it who knows where to get them to stop it.

When I'm at a doctors office and the smoking hot assistant is taking my blood pressure. I hit 151/95 twice and was ready to ask her send somebody else in here, you're bad for my heart rate.

@Darkness are you tuned? My buddies 1.4 had a ?berger? Tune that really woke it up with responsiveness and killed the limiters. I personally took it up to 140 and ‘felt’ the change. But it was rich enough to darken the paint near the muffler. But i was impressed for a 1.4.

they also gave him a cheap gas tune that was probably 100hp and got him over 50mpg.

Yeah my car has a tune already, I have no idea which one. I know it peaks at 23psi and holds around 16psi at higher rpm. I have a feeling it's a stage 2 tune and is hampered by my stock downpipe/exhaust, which makes me angry and belongs in this thread.

Factory boost I believe peaks at 11psi and holds at 8psi, so my tune is putting a beat down on my turbo. The kit I am interested in adds just a bit of horsepower without losing reliability and looks completely factory to the smog guy. Really more of a maintenance with a bonus than a mod for power.

His new jetta also got some fancy 19”wheels and a sewed on ala cart ra steering wheel cover and crown royal shift boot. I seem to have been denied vw culture for long enough. Bring on the plaid and rusty on purpose.

I wish mine had the plaid. Mine is boring grey leather inside. If I was keeping it much longer I would swap in some oxblood red interior, like the red they use on BMW.

I'm going to do something to the paint soon. Top is losing clear. Maybe sand down and wrap, maybe paint it black, maybe even bed liner it. Peeling clear coat makes me angry.

Had a leg scan once, smokin' hot technician came in. I'm laying on my back in my skivvies with a blanket over me and she announces..."Is it hot in here or is it just me?"
Had to remind myself I've been married 29 years for a reason, what it was I couldn't recall at the moment but there was a reason.

I know it's not as big a deal in Canada as in the US but we were really disappointed with Black Friday this year. My wife was at Indigo and they had one small shelf with stuff that was 30% off and the other flyers and ads we saw were similar.

I usually don't find good deals on anything I want/need on black Friday or cyber Monday or any of these flash sale days. I do see occasional deals on things I don't need/want but I've been trying hard to prioritize what I buy and not make impulse purchases.

The only thing I saw this year that tempted me was an exhaust header/muffler for my Beetle that was $30 off. I'm passing on it because it isn't the brand I really wanted. If that retailer has the same tiered deal next year I'll buy a lot from. They did something like 10% off up to $599, 15% off up to $1199, 20% off over $1200. I'm building a motor next Winter and getting 20% off on the parts sounds sweet.

This year I think I agree. The "sales" aren't amazing and the items on sale are not that desirable (or things I already have).

In my experience Boxing "week" has better deals and I'm not typically buying the newest, hottest stuff that's likely to sell out. Both the TVs I've bought I've gotten like January 3rd.

What makes me a bit angry is not seeing any footage of a good old shoppers gone mad scene during black Friday. Wally world used to be great for those.

    I'm mad now.

Sisters 2014 Kia Soul was at the dealer last week with a check engine light. They looked over it, drove it, said there was no code and we picked it up. She's been driving it until Thursday, check engine light and dashboard lit up. Towed it to same dealer.

Called today and they tell me it has no oil and has scorching on the cylinder walls. I'm pretty furious. They said they took the info and sent it to Kia to see what their response is and what work they'd cover (forget the exact wording, but Kia paying for work was definitely mentioned).

I think the dealer knows where they're at. They drove the car, they know it's a common problem to burn oil in the Souls, they know there was a check engine light. They sent it back out on the road, and 10 miles later (literally the 2nd time my sister drove it), it's out of oil and scorching cylinder walls. The engine chugging oil is because of a fault in the design, common on the Souls. Kia just recalled 125k Souls a few months back. I mean, if they think there's nothing here, why even send the info to Kia?

I expect to get a response tomorrow, but preparing for the worst (engine replacement needed, Kia not covering anything). In which case we'll definitely be having a talk with the dealer in person. Worst scenario is it's traded in, sister get's something else -- NOT a Soul. Best case? It's salvageable, throw some 0w30 in it and be done.

Refinanced my mortgage closed 3 weeks ago.

Old mortgage still not paid off.

Turns out the bank's attorney's wire transfers kept getting denied.

I found this out by calling "old" mortgage company to ask why it still shows a balance.

Simple answer was it has yet to be paid off.

Loan guy, a pretty old friend of mine, says I'm on the hook for per diem interest for it not having been paid off.

Pretty sure the bank will be deducting it from the escrow refund we should be getting.

My friend says it's not his fault, or the bank's lawyer's fault.

    really?

it is most definitely not MY fault.

How can it be that the wire was denied and the bank's lawyer did not do anything about it?

    How fucked up is that?
