Somebody help me understand the need for a snorkel on a truck

What's the purpose of a snorkel on a vehicle? I'm trying to decide if they look cool, or are they just functional? I don't see any on Tundras but plenty on Land Cruisers and Tacomas.

What's up with that/them?

 

Sealed air box system so you can drive through large puddles and streams without having to worry about the system sucking up water. I've seen some tundras with them. It's just not common because most don't off-road as seriously with tundras because they are too wide and long.

A snorkel has many advantages, the two main ones are

1. Less chance of water entering the enging when crossing rivers
2. Access to clearner and cooler air

 

Intake system. It draws air from the snorkel rather than the air box. Much higher clearence

 

Duh Jeff, it's to turn your truck into a submarine! Or would it be a subtank?

 

I think you should put one on your truck just for looks. You might actually need it if that creek rises like it did back when they were doing work

I'm actually thinking of putting one on my house with all this freakin snow. It's already dropped another 8 or 9 inches again tonight

 

It's a way for guys to compensate for their small...... I mean, it's for crossing deep water which, obviously, can be really dangerous.

 

Isn't it a bit late in the season for that much snow?

 

Yeah, our creek is ripping again and we got a little more snow here to. What happened to spring? I'm getting a snorkel and an exhaust stack.

 

Snorkels on a modern street-able vehicle don't make a whole lot of sense to me.. If you drive through water deep enough to actually need it, you're gonna trash all the electronics. Now for a purpose-built stripped down ORV, that's another story.

Snorkel- Overland cool looking eye candy for most who install them. Just sayin...

 

Cool AND functional. Especially when you find yourself sitting in water that was up to the windshield wipers.

 

I never will, and if I do it means I have made a pretty bad decision I owned an FJ the first year it was released. A fun Toy.

Snorkels have their place. If you cross deep water, your intake could suck in air. But on a tundra the water would have to be really deep. You would get water in your cab. But, if you drive the proper speed and create a proper bow wave you can safely cross really deep water with a snorkel.

I avoid deep water crossings at all costs. two foot max for me.

 

toyota actually specs the stock 4x4 tundra for 27" deep water at 5mph

I understand the purpose, but the whole "eye candy" thought....I'm not sure that's how I would describe it. I get it if you have a purpose, but maybe I'm just not badass enough to need it. I'm sure there are others on here that will need one way before me.

If you do, take pictures before your truck gets destroyed

 

Also fairly handy for those dusty trails as well...especially when you're running as tail gunner.

In hotter climes, it's true "cold" air with the added benefit of some low end ram air at highway speeds. It was noticeable in my FJ, despite the fact I was pushing a barn through the wind.

Hardest part was the install. Measure 10 times and cut once!! Lol
