Been 2-3 days now since installing the cooler kit and I have to say I can’t believe that Toyota made us go to these measures, though I am glad that we have options. The transmission is so much happier with the cooler installed, and more in line with everything I know about transmission temps after owning a dozen different trucks and towing with all of them. This is the results from my 50 mile highway commute to work (without a trailer, just me in the truck) before the cooler was installed and then the same commute with the cooler installed. Don’t quite understand how it’s running so cool because I thought that the thermostat didn’t even open until 195 deg but either way I’m pretty happy with the results. The highest pan temp I have seen is 190.7 deg.

Unfortunately, I don’t. I only offer the Setrab 15-Row cooler for the 19-21 Tundras. You won’t be disappointed with the quality or performance of the Setrab.

I can assure you that the Setrab-15 Row cooler is no compromise in performance or quality. If you were to have the same truck with the same load I’m not sure you’ll see much of a difference in pan temperatures. This is because the thermostat only allows ATF to flow to the oil cooler past 185-190 degrees and both coolers will maintain a pan temp of 190-220 under the same load. The Setrab-15 Row cooler is also larger than any factory designed transmission cooler Toyota has put on a Tundra.

Isn't a better way to check level by putting the leveler on the underside of the transmission pan? As opposed to frame or anywhere else.

I was thinking the same thing when installing. Heres the conclusion I came to:

Since we are looking for a trickle from the level check stand pipe, not a drip, as long as the truck is level (front-back, side-side) the oil level will be close enough. Even if the level bubble is not perfectly centered but still within the level marks it should be fine. Again, all because what we’re looking for before installing the drain plug is a trickle, not a full stop of out flow. The small variance from perfect level shouldn’t matter.

    Thoughts ??

I promise you that the Toyota techs are not leveling a damn thing when they perform a transmission service and adjust the fluid level. There has to be a variable amount of leeway.

I use the frame when doing the level check procedure. Toyota specifies the truck must be within 1 degree of being level from front to rear/side to side.

The shop floor at the dealership is most likely level already. The reason I include it in my instructions is because most house garages and/or driveways have a slant or grade to them to divert water.

Actually they do it while it’s on a twin post lift and they aren’t exactly level either. No way a tech is crawling on the ground to drain and check the fluid level.

I just check the Toyota shop service manual (TIS 2016-2021 Tundra). In the automatic transmission fluid adjustment section it states: “Maintain the vehicle in a horizontal position while adjusting the fluid level”. In the automatic transmission fluid replacement section it states: “Set the vehicle on a lift so that the vehicle is kept level when it is lifted up (make sure that tilt angle from front to rear of the vehicle is within +/- 1 degree”).

That is correct , my garage is 3 inch higher in the back .
Usually I backup the truck into the garage and was not level and needed front to be raised .
All I had to do is to get The truck forward so the front of it is in the back of the garage and that sucker was 100% level front to back and side to side

I'm debating if if should change my fluid since installing my cooler at 16820 miles. I did some towing of our mini camper (2600lbs) several times before installing the cooler kit. I kinda thought my fluid looked pretty good? I thought about maybe doing a drop and fill at 25,000 miles and once a year after that point. Any thoughts?

I was towing 4200 lb trailer for the last 3 years in the summer time that is . I have 15k on my truck now and the oil looked pretty good to me .
Will do the service on the 60k recommended interval

Question on the MHX-514 cooler. Does it make a difference which of the two ports is on top? For instance, the cooler has a metal tag on one side and a black model label on the other side.

Today I ran the truck a little harder than the other day to test out the cooler and had hills to work with to. It’s awesome to watch the thermostat open right at 195, every time my OBD reader registered 194.1 deg and I’m thinking it’s going over 195 it would flicker 195.4 for a split sec and then the temps started dropping when the tstat would open. The temps would go down to about 185 and then slowly start working its way back up to 195 and repeat. Very reassuring to see this operating the way it was designed. In this stretch of road my pan would easily get between 220-230 deg and basically stay there, and this of course was not towing anything, just me in the truck. So I’m easily seeing a 25-30 deg drop in transmission temps with no trailer. When I tried to tow my trailer in D with tow haul earlier this month it was on its way to overheating, 235 + pan temps and rising and I had to put the trans in S4 to keep it from doing so. It’s nice to stop having to worry about transmission temps now that I have the cooler. All of this may not mean much to people who live in flat America but here in the Rockies it’s a no brainer to install this kit.

I concur, after I installed the MHX kit , and leveled the truck and added/drained ATF fluid , I started noticing smoother and more positive shifts than the past year or so I had the truck !!!

I think brand new trucks are just filled with x amount of fluid capacity at production and that’s what the new customer gets . But when it comes to service work, I just don’t see the techs (based on the ones I know) spending a bunch of time messing around with a level to adjust fluid. However level it is on the rack is good enough and they just do the procedure, that’s if they do it at all. I could see them just putting x amount of qts in based on previous services and calling it good too.

The MHX-514 cooler is bi-directional so you may install it either way.

For those who have a kit installed… I started a Facebook page (Genuine Cooling Systems). If you guys wouldn’t mind dropping a picture or two of your Tundras with the kit installed and a short review I would greatly appropriate it.

    Thank you!

I set up the fusion app to monitor. I have not done the custom PID from the first page of this thread. The app does have A/T oil temp #1, and number 2 as a selectable temperature to monitor. Is that the pan and converter?

I ordered the mhx 514 for my 21 trd pro and had the dealer install it, they said I was missing a piece that keeps the hoses from rubbing one another, and ordered me the part.

Here it is, I don't know how this mounts in there to keep them from rubbing 20211210_175310.jpg

I think I see where it would go but wouldn't they both still be right next to each other?
