Agreed. Sweers loves market surveys, and surveys are a useful tool, but what market segments is Toyota sending the surveys to??? What segments are their ads aimed at???

I suppose having only prototypes to show til recently they don't want to go on a big ad campaign with prototypes. But now they should start showing off the awesome Crawl Control digging out of mudpits and snow, the factory lift with 35's, ground clearance, maybe show those optional towhooks (in red of course!).

I think lack of full-time 4HI will bite them in the ass, it's an industry standard now. They won't grow their market share by omitting an industry standard. Same with the '23 Sequoia, should be 2HI - fulltime 4HI - 4LO and CDL.

Side note before I forget, I wonder if a 35" spare will fit in the stock location?

Has anyone seen a first real production tundra hit the dealership yet? I heard rumors of a few getting trucks in.

Early December is when they should start hitting lots- depending on travel delays and location. My dealership is expecting their first few in 2 weeks

So the new Tundra does not engage 4HI??

edit: Are you saying that it's bad the Tundra doesn't have auto 4HI? I live in the Midwest. I never use auto 4HI and prefer to always select 4HI. I've had too many 180's to never rely on auto 4HI ever again.

I was getting surveys for the new Tundra. I dont remember how I signed up for them or if they just got my info when I bought my current tundra.

Not on it's own, no. You have to manually place it in 4HI which as we know isn't recommended on dry roads for very long.

Good question. I have heard multiple things. Some say it has 4 hi and auto 4hi

2022 Tundra does not have Auto 4hi. As someone who drives half the year in snow / ice, it is a deal breaker for me in a next Gen pickup.

Still holding out hope they carry the feature over to the next Gen Sequoia, as I am thinking of going to a full size SUV to replace the Tundra. This would keep Toyota in the running for my next vehicle.

I believe your correct. There’s just a handful of YouTube guys who have stated otherwise.

After doing some reading of the 22 manual, one has to manually select 4HI.

It does not do auto 4HI.

When I drive in snowy/icy weather, I always prefer to not rely on the truck to determine when to engage 4HI.

No, it has part-time 4HI, but does not have fulltime 4HI. Fulltime 4HI means you can stay in 4HI 24/7/365 on any pavement in any road condition. Toyota has had it in Land Cruisers and the old V8 4Runners for millions of miles. Ridiculous they skipped over it as not even an option on the 3G. Every other fullsize 1/2 ton truck has it.
Do you remember the actual questions? I'd be interested to see the questions. I know I'm harping on this, but how in the F could anybody surveyed say no to full-time 4HI???

There were several surveys. Some were like how many times do you open and shut your doors each day. How many times a week do you have passengers? How do you use your truck? What kind of roads do you drive on? How often do you tow or haul, how heavy? How often do you use 4wd? They gave several options for performance and gas mileage. Asked about the audio system etc. I dont remember one specifically asking about auto 4wd, but I've been getting them for probably 3-4 years so it may have been in there.

Some actually hate any kind of interference from the truck. They just don't trust that the truck will make the right decision. I'm not one of those.

From reading these forums, I think the truck is smarter than many of the drivers.

This is just an honest question that I believe I already know the answer to but is there any chance they changed something somewhere in the drivetrain that might permit full time 4wd with impunity on hard, dry surfaces? It's one thing to disappoint by not adding something everyone else has but it does seem hard to believe they would take such a huge step backwards.

You have to remember that most Tundra owners are older individuals and as you get older change becomes harder. Most male truck owners think they are great drivers and can do a better job than the nannies that watch over them.

All I know is I'm a bigtime fan of Toyota fulltime 4HI. Owned two 4.7l V8 4Runners which are fulltime 4HI like the Land Cruiser. Amazingly durable system even towing 7k lbs at times and keep going for 300k miles. Seemed a no-brainer to pop it into a all-new Tundra.

That's what we all said, too. It's like they want the new Tundra to fail.

I bet it was a calculated omission. I would bet that 90% of truck buyers don't really think about things like auto 4wd when they buy a new truck. They get in the truck and notice things like the pano sunroof and big audio screens. Those are the features that actually sell trucks.

Only thing I can think of is Sweers just didn't think outside the box. Or maybe Corporate said make this a seller in what we've done before, make it competitive for a small market share.

I feel like the full size 3 row SUVs are more marketed as luxury vehicles, based on the price and features and those all get full time 4wd.

Aside: I wish those people would stick to luxury sedans.

I wonder if most vehicle buyers are part of a family. Maybe a couple with 2.1 kids are whatever the latest stats say. These folks used to buy 4 door sedans until something perceived as being cooler came along. Something always does or else the manufacturers and advertisers would go out of business and shareholders would revolt.
So these folks bought station wagons then mini-vans then crossovers and now they're buying trucks.
We don't have kids but a friend that just has one, drives an F150 crew cab and I gotta say the cab is so friggen massive you forget there's even a truck bed behind you. But from the outside he sure looks cool driving that truck instead of a minivan, plus the wife loves it because it's comfortable and well acquainted.
The folks in Japan know all too well that they will never chip away a sizable portion of those folks that buy work trucks from the Big 3, but they have also figured out that they can and will compete for a reasonable portion of those folks looking for the latest cool vehicle.
Those folk seeking a work truck would be wise to cut through the chaf and see if they can build a vehicle to suit there needs. If not, then move on. Sadly, its those folks not seeking one whom will find it way easier to purchase this 3rd gen.

Sorry but I do not believe omitting full time 4WD will cause the Tundra to "fail". Sure, some buyers will shy away on account of the omission but Toyota will still sell all they want to make. YMMV

Before I joined these forums I had no idea you could get full time 4wd in a pick up, I thought it was only for suvs and such. I always thought every truck needed to have 4wd engaged through a floor shifter or a switch, ignorance is bliss:anonymous:

I have no use for it in the south regardless, and its probably why I haven't heard of it, no one I know has it. And if they do, they don't talk about it like it's an amazing feature.

Now if I lived up north, It would be nice to have, but nothing I would trade in my truck for.

As long as I get 4WHI for as long as I want on wet, snow/slush or muddy long dirt/muddy roads I don’t care, if it’s not an option at all then bye,bye Tundra.
    Please advise/confirm. Thank you.

Wonder if they omitted full time 4 due to mpgs? I have never had a full time 4 truck and have actually never needed it living in Colorado, Montana and Idaho. When the roads get shitty, slow down and shift to 4hi

Aerodynamics and tire/wheel weight play a huge role in MPG that should not be discounted when discussing simply the weight of a vehicle and the engine's HP.

I didn't want to start a whole new topic for this and couldn't find a place to put it so I figured I'll just throw it in here since it's related to the "trusting a vehicle to drive".

I caught this commercial yesterday and it seemed a little shocking that GMC would sort of promote driving without holding the wheel. That being said, I'm certain that a truck can drive better than most clowns on the road now. Actually, if my dog had opposable thumbs I'm sure he'd be better than most clowns as well.

I just wish people could read yield signs. I almost get into an accident at least once a week because someone doesn't know what a yield sign is on the on ramp I use to get on the highway. I end up having to slam on my brakes to avoid it and they give you a dumb look like what did I do
