Well about that…I know start/stop technology is annoying but it would be perfect for these trucks…

    Would save a lil cash.
Not sure how much the engine and other parts would like it.

How long do you let it warm up in the morning? I am a 3 minute guy max right now but I am a new owner.

After moving to Canada from Florida, I did notice that my MPG drastically gotten worst during winter due to winter fuel blend and I have to start pumping mid grade to hi octane to prevent the CEL to go on with "bank 1 and 2 running too rich".

I agree with this. During summer in Florida, I start the truck to cool it before hopping and just idling for 10-15 minuets can creep up on you. Now living in Canada, I have to warm up the truck before getting in during blistering cold winters.

I literally only wait till the rpms come down up. You’ll definitely hear it on the V8 or even see it on the rpm gauge. But you have to drive very gently to give the transmission a chance to warm up. I am in a neighborhood so I have a good mile of gentle driving before I hop on a highway. Honestly I’ve been like this my whole driving life and never had a engine or transmission problem on the numerous Toyota trucks I owned thankfully.

I’m getting about 1-2 mpg better now (14,000) than when new.
I live @8,000’ and get an average of 14.5-15 mpg.
If I don’t use the cruise control I get better results than when I do.

I don’t relate fuel “economy” to my Tundra. Maybe fuel “consumption” or “guzzled” :D

I got 17.5 MPG for every gallon I pumped into my 2WD TRD Sport. This is a hand calculation...total miles driven divided by total fuel pumped. Ironically, I got slightly better MPG when I engaged the Tow/Haul all the time...about 0.4 mpg. 80% highway driving averaging about 65 mph.

Warming it up does nothing IMO. It only takes a few seconds for the moving parts in the engine to warm up...try touching your exhaust manifold after 30 seconds. But what doesn't warm up at all until you drive it is the differential, the transfer case...all the drivetrain stuff. So let you truck warm up...blowing nice warm air out of the vents...then hit it hard....stressing those still ice cold drivetrain parts. Best to by pass the warm up and just idle down the road for the first few blocks....warming everything gently.

Well, of course he didn't buy a 5.7L Tundra for fuel economy, but 11 mpg is horrible. If he'd said he got 4 mpg or 5 or 6, would people still be chastising him for saying his Tundra gets poor mileage and asking what he expects? Or is there some point at which we'd all agree that's terrible? :boink:

I'm a recent owner of my first 5.7L Tundra, and over 2500 miles so far I'm averaging 10.4 mpg dragging a 6000-pound travel trailer around 90% of the time. If you're not pulling a lot of weight, driving like a maniac, spending hours a week in stop-and-go traffic, or continually driving into a hurricane-force headwind, you've got cause to complain.

You say you've been a Toyota tech for 25 years. Are you still in the industry? Should I assume it's not throwing any codes, or have you checked?

I got 15-17 (best ever 17ish) on the highway, changing to 11-12 after lift and tires.

I have a 2020 that has always got me around 514 miles to the tank with a 38 gallon tank. Seems like right around 16 miles to the gallon as an average.

    Too many, but not enough....
Get a dirty deeds exhaust. I've had mine for a couple tanks now and I noticed a 1 mpg jump.

No I get that but the reality here is simple…it saves a lot of gas especially annually. It’s highly annoying however it saves a lot of gas. I see it on my dad’s RAV4. He averages about 27 ALL city driving and I get about 25 20% city/80% highway on my slightly older 2018 with no start/stop. The annoyance would be worth it on the 5.7 for me personally…

Our 2013 RAV4 has averaged 27.9 mpg since the day we brought in home eight years and 60,000 miles ago. The difference between your dad's 27 and your 25 could very likely have more to do with your driving habits than some gizmo designed to save fuel at stops. Any engine obviously uses less fuel with a dead engine than sitting there idling, but I feel like Mike that unless you spend a lot of time sitting in traffic it won't make enough difference to be worth the additional complication.

But ... to be fair, I've never driven one. So there is that :)

Yes it definitely depends on where you live and how you drive as to whether it’s useful or not. My dads area and my area are basically comparable. A dense rural population with MANY traffic lights. And it’s a miracle if you can get two green lights in a row. I am the type of driver that goes miles out of the way just to avoid them. In my mind moving isn’t wasting gas while idling is… And I truly hate wasting gas for no good reason. I can see the risks outweighing the rewards if let’s say you live rural Georgia or similar state.

Unfortunately turning the truck off at every light isn’t feasible. I agree that no vehicle should “think” for the driver because the driver should always be thinking. But start/stop or even collision alerts are not intrusive on a driver. You still control the vehicle in every way because you can shut it off while towing or for whatever reason. My buddies Prius steers and brakes when it thinks it’s going to be in a collision…that is too intrusive for me.

I range from 10 mgp driving in town for 5-10 miles at a time that's all stop and go. To 18mpg on freeway trips feathering throttle on flat land.
Also i have to factor in a fiberglass camper shell weight and larger 275/70 tires. Many of members here do lots of modding that we have to factor in.

I took a 50 mile trip the other day. Set the cruise to 57mph. Got 20mpg for that trip. These things are terrible on city milage but if you're on the highway and set it at 65 its easy to get 18mpg. I average about 14mpg per tank but I also dont go over 65mph and always make sure to keep the toque converter locked.

I just completed a 4800 mile trip to KS & TN round trip all Hiway, mileage 20-21mpg round trip from Fresno, Ca. Changed oil and filter and new K&N air filter. Air filter made the difference.
We have to remember that the useable gal's are 30 gallons the other 8 gal's are used to keep the fuel pump cool. That's the bummer!!!!

I have about 2700 miles on mine and always average right around 11 mpg. I'm at 11.7 mpg on the current tank.

Just be careful with the K&N from everything I've heard they give better performance by letting more air through but also doesnt do as good of a job actually filtering.

When my truck was new, I was getting 13 city/17 hwy, but now that I have 15,000 miles on the truck I'm getting 14 city/18.5 hwy. I never drive faster then 68 mph.
Once you drive faster then 70 mph it's like hitting a brink wall, for mileage.
My truck is stock except for leveling kit.
When pulling my 6,500/7,000 lbs travel trailer I get 9-10 mpg.

I nearly fell over with disbelief in a good way. During my 360 mile one way trip for thanksgiving my truck reached a high of 18 mpg. I was not towing anything & I drove for 1 hour in 4 wheel drive due to ice on the road. I guess the Wyoming wind was pushing me that morning.
