Is it common for the transmission to seem clunky when the truck is practically still new at 12k miles? I notice a lot of rough shifting at times when I am city driving.

I have seen posts from people on here joking about the newer transmissions and at 60k they self destruct.

Clunking because of the lack of a transmission cooler from the factory :anonymous:

I'd take it to the dealer though. Shouldn't be rough shifting though.

I did a drain and fill at 1000 miles and again at 5000 miles. Transmission shifts smooth.

Mine gets confused if I brake check a stop sign. It shifts fine and smooth from a standstill. Usually it seems to select a lower gear than what was needed if I don’t come to a complete stop. I think my light foot causes part of problem, if I have to step into it with a heavy foot it will tack up and shift as expected.

Slowing down then accelerating lightly at lower speeds feels like incomplete shift logic from the programmers as it hunts for the gear it wants.

Mine is smooth as hell. Whether ice cold at startup out the driveway or overheating it from driving under normal conditions.

I had a 6 spd 2013 F150 and this 6 speed is noticeably smoother under all conditions. In fact there was one hill in my neighborhood where the F150 would always rough shift from a stop, 1st to second gear (left turn, sudden downhill). This trans handles it without issue.

Yeah mine is buttery smooth and it’s definitely smoother than my 2012 V6 Tacoma (love it but that drivetrain was clunky-I believe to the split axel, had to grease it frequently) and slightly smoother than my 2017 4Runner.

Every once in a while I will get a clunk after it downshifted itself on a large downhill and I touch the gas to maintain speed. But it’s rare and I have had similar occasional drivetrain clunks, to varying degrees, on all seven Toyota trucks I had own since 1996.

It was was the 5 speed… Not that you say that I definitely remember that “lag” in 2nd to 3rd especially while towing my ATVs. I did have to really push the skinny pedal down to get past it quickly. But overall that thing was a night and day difference in TOWING vs the 5th gen 4Runner. Unloaded the 4Runner was better but with about 2k attached the Tacoma destroyed it. The 4Runner would gear hunt like crazy at 62 mph on the slightest of inclines.

Mine is butter smooth compared to the six speed on my previous truck (2018 Silverado). That thing shifted like a monkey trying to drive stick

I can replicate this issue too. Normally going down hill though. It's like when the transmission is revving slightly higher to keep a constant speed when going down the hill then if I tap the gas slightly, it'll jump.

I have had a few hard shifts that were extremely bad so much so I checked my rear view mirror to see if someone hit me.

Ooh, yeah, those are bad. The 8 speed is also wild sometimes.

This occasionally happens on my 2020 as well. The truck downshifts on the downhill, and if I give it gas at the right (or wrong) moment it seems like it is in neutral for a second.. then clunks.. then engages.

The clunk isn’t horrible but I’ve learned to feather the pedal on downhills to avoid this scenario...

I previously owned a 2013 F150, and while that particular transmission is known to be pretty reliable, what it wasn't is smooth shifting. In fact, while either warming up, OR driving around at a very slow speed (e.g., parking lot) and then accelerating, it'd shift very hard.

Only time mine shifts hard is when I've confused it (e.g., the very rare times I have to accelerate, stop and then accelerate all within a very short time). Other than that, it's very smooth.

I've had clunking issues with my 2017 on multiple occasions. I was worried until my son told me I was hitting the speed limiter:)
Since then I've purchased a '21 1794 and its transmission seems smoother than the other two Tundra's I've owned. Smoother in all driving situations.
But I only have 2K on the odometer so we'll see what happens after I drive more miles.

I have a 21 and 4k miles. I was stuck in traffic last night and first time it was clunky with the constant stop and go. Then today going up a hill I noticed a slight clunk. Nothing at all like my GM 8 speed, ugh...that was a nightmare...but it does seem more clunky than first bought. If it continues, I'll take it to the dealer.

This is exactly what I am experiencing to a T. I think I am going to schedule a visit to the dealer next weekend.
