Great minds work alike? That's exactly where I'm at. Either two tallboys or three shorties. Most of what I'm drinking is 6-7 abv.

Basically, yes, seriously, check what Jack said, if valid for your potential employer:

    First: Congrats.

Second: They're going to make it sound as right as possible to get people in the door. What's actually on the other side of the door is another story, one you won't know fully 'til inside. While it's the first interview for you, they've had dozens of interviews in 2021 finding what people want to hear, then perfect the song and dance.

    This is super-solid advice too:

But also, probe on benefits if not already clear: Medical, dental, vision, 401k, vacation, sick, any transit options? Not saying there's going to be a lot of these perks where you are, but it's an employee's market right now, lots of places are upping their game on offerings, including sign-on bonuses.

Don't be afraid to push back for another 5-10% with any rational excuse, like, "it's extra commute time for me, if we can get to $X amount to cover my gas and time, I'd love to work for you". YMMV, understand I'm saying this b/c our ppl usually aim ~10-15% below our max. Only for ATL in-town, our PHX HQ is different.

Then again, we may need to stop doing that shit, because one of our sites has seen a 90% rejection rate on offers we've extended in the last 3 months. Again, potential worked are being picky because they can be.

Most people DO NOT get more than inflation wage increases once hired (if anything) unless you get promoted, so negotiating something you can live with now is crucial. Sorry if this is something you already know, based on what you recently saw with your current gig.

I'm using Ring Pro for the doorbell. All smart/home devices wired or wifi are on separate VLAN/SSID so they can't interact with our personal stuff, because, as someone else said, while PRC is a valid threat with a lot of all-in-one-box CCTV appliances (DVR/NVR), none of those devices need to talk to anything personal. Your smartphone is the bigger risk, TikTok's app alone has at least three active backdoors in it today our group found, you know how many ppl have it installed on something in their house that's attached to their home network? Worth noting other nation-state actors are actively targeting things, but PRC is controlling it at the manufacturing level, they backdoor so much stuff sent abroad, it's absurd.

    Anyway, off topic.

If you want simple, and you already have Ring, and wifi coverage is good, and you're aware of and OK with the subscription model, go with it, maybe go with the floodlight cams I'll mention in a sec, skip the solar. But I highly recommend putting all those devices on your 'guest' wifi and be sure to turn off the "Sidewalk" feature of ANY scAmazon-owned device (Ring, Echo, etc.) because scAmazon is - and this is not tinfoil shit, look it up - building small, broad mesh networks with their devices which could ultimately be a vector for any number of things you don't want. I personally like that Ring makes installations really easy with their spotlight/floodlight cameras - the devices get direct power from your outside power through the flood light fixture itself.

Nest - same story as Ring, only Google owns it, so maybe a hair more trustworthy than scAmazon. They have solid products available that function the same. Can't speak to pricing, not familiar with their sub model. Their hardware is usually more highly rated in various consumer tech review sites. Many folks already have their thermostats.

Another wireless option is Netgear Arlo. Again, subscription model to contend with. Eufy, Wyze, and Blink are other possibles to look into, see if these fit your needs. Several people in my area seem to be using Wyze because it's super low-budget, I think? Blink may be same. Last one: My neighbor pulled the plug on his alarm company recently and installed a SimpliSafe system - they've apparently released wireless cameras now too.

Above all else, as mentioned above, the all-in-one boxes with wired or wireless cameras You find at Costco, Sams or Bud's are usually utter shit, not worth the money. Not to say wired systems are bad, they're just usually budget, and like any other all-in-one, you're getting a base system which you'll be compelled to upgrade later.

I blabbed all this shit down, you may be wondering ... Ok, so what do I have?

My home network is probably a little bit more stout than your average person's because of what I'm doing for a living the last decade plus. I'm running a pretty beefy QNAP head at home for our main storage, hypervisor, and backup client, with Ubiquiti POE as our core switch, Ubiquiti WAPs for wifi. I'm running a mix of Vivotek and Dahua cameras, wired, powered from the Ubiquiti POE core. QNAP's QVR app is the brains, does the motion recording, etc. everything on UPS, ~45 min off-power.

If you wanted to go the piecemeal route, Dahua's stuff gets rebranded under about a dozen different names (probably more). You can find their pre-packaged kits online that don't super-suck, but again, those kits are a base to upgrade. It's not like this stuff is impossible to learn yoursel, but much of the manuals are written in Engrish at best, and there are some pitfalls you can make - like not putting your DVR/NVR on battery backup, for example - someone cuts your power, it's lights out for CCTV.

Personally, I'd recommend going with a solution that matches what you've got in your home. Nest? Ring? At least if you're running one brand, it's one less party to need to worry about. But seriously, if your wireless at home offers a 'guest' network, put all your smart/home devices (IoT crap) on that Guest network.

And if you install one of the all-in-one systems with a recorder, I can't stress enough: Don't let it talk out to the internet. Which also means don't open it up so you can connect to it from outside - if you can do that, so can everyone else, the guys in China are literally cobbling code on those devices together, never update it, and you'd be shocked to see how many vulnerabilities a simple automated pen test tool finds on most of those systems. If you MUST open to internet, make sure it's on an isolated network, so if someone DOES get in, they're limited in what else they can reach.

Smart man. I love their stuff. Ubiquiti's Unifi stuff and Fortinet appliances are at the heart of most commercial LV side jobs I'm working these days, with custom- tailored Dahua wired on the CCTV side.

When Cisco is charging $600+ for one wireless access point and thousands for the switch they're fed from - not including licensing - and you have someone like Ubiquiti jump on the scene pushing their entire suite of Unifi products as cheap as they are, $100/access point, and POE switches, routers, etc. for a couple hundred... no-brainer. The interfaces are super nice, and the stuff just works. Conceptually the way they've changed some known standards sucks (port tagging is a big annoying one), but overall ... killer bang for buck.

So that means that @dirtydeeds kit would be the same for me as any 2000-2004 access cab.

    Very nice.

His exhaust package is outrageous for our trucks. You do not need to drop $3000+ on exhaust for a truck you paid less than $5k for.

@Tundra2 I've had so many no-shows & accepts job then no-shows. I get her excitement. It is simply a sign of the times - not good or bad about the company. People are applying for jobs & going through motions so they can keep the unemployment flowing. Deceit/fraud/#lacksethics is rampant. Her excitement is at having found a person who honestly wants to work & possibly even has some work ethic.
HR is a tough gig right now & she is a human with a job. Allow her excitement for a tiny (potential) win in a hard job.

@FirstGenVol Friends Ring spotlight/camera just had one of the 2 spotlights go out slightly over 1 year old. I know they had? issues with feeds being hacked, but think that has been fixed.
Same Ring friend has several of their products & has decided going forward they will just get what's on special at Costco simply for the generous return policies. Ring says past 1 year they don't know you.

I was chatting with an IT guy running ethernet on a job about my "awesome" netgear nighthawk and what a piece of shit it was. Constantly had to reset it, shit interface. He recommended ubiquiti so I picked up a dream machine not much later. A little steep at $300 bucks but I haven't had a single problem. Port forwarding was easy for my server, the interface is easy. Very, very nice router.

Will provide a more detailed write up soon. Going in to work early as supervisor has vacation until Monday.

OK, so after a lengthy 10 minutes of research, it's speculated to have a 6 spd standard. I don't know though, after what toyota did to the supra and tundra, I'm skeptical.

Also, have you got to work on a new supra? I remember that 93 you got to work on a few years back. We need to start a thread just for you like: "what empty worked on today" or something.

Putting the dirt in dirty south. :D

When the SW and 'True South' won't claim you, you don't just get to glom on. This is what happens when you wanna be the PRT.

Slushbox and DCT are not the same thing. (I don't know which this new thing has. Just interjecting a possibility.)

I used this to the fullest extent yesterday. Worked wonders, and I was able to talk to the manager, and supervisor with some inkling of knowledge. A twinkle of drive to learn.

I went slightly against the grain here. They asked why I was leaving, and I gave them two examples of very small issues that I've had at work. I didn't feel like I was dragging them through the mud, but sharing an experience. (Pay, and start date. I was hired as an intern first, and then hired full time later. (I didn't mention this part, but simply said it's caused issues in HR.) HR uses one date if it suits them for one annual thing, or the other. Each anniversary is different depending on the topic.)

At the end of my story telling, I brought up 5 different good points about my current employer. Things I really enjoy, and will miss when I go. Balance the good, and the bad.

I explained to both manager and supervisor that I am not in expert in anything, but I do have the building blocks to be, and know more. I'm ready to learn, and challenge myself in a new field.

I don't know what the PRT is. Sounds like some red shit. But the south and south west need the Republic of Texas more than we need them anyways lol
