ATF Drain and Fill

Yes I did.
I probably should have let it cool down before draining as I’m sure a lil more came out since it was warm and putting the same amount of cool fluid in means I might be a bit over full but I’m 20k into it and no issues so it’s probably fine.

 

There is probably a normal range of fluid just like on the oil pan dipstick

 

What are you guys using to fill? as far as pump?

Yeah it's a great tool to have, works better than the one i have that fits in the differential fluid bottles. This one pushes a lot more pure pump.

 

One thing I'd like to add though is to make sure you break off these little plastic tabs on the end of the hose because they have a tendency to break and you wouldn't want them to end up in your pan. One of mine was actually already broken off when I received it.

 

Thats an interesting temp range. Every post i have read when doing the trans cooler says 99-111 degrees F. Whats the difference when doing a drain/fill?

 

Whats easier than those things is get 6ft of 5/8 OD tubing and a small funnel. Run the tube from top to fill hole. This saves a lot of mess and headache with the bottle pump.

 

This is how I do it. You can run the hose by the brake booster and hold the funnel in the back corner of the engine compartment.

 

Home depot carries a nice penzoil branded pump. Worked really really well

 

What scares me with the pump is getting the bottle empty. In other words guessing how much is left in the bottle when trying to add a specific amount.

 

My suggestion is to do 4qts and then do the check procedure.

 

Right- that’s what I do but with a funnel instead of the pump because you can’t empty the bottles with the pump. You would need 5 quarts to get in a full 4.

 

Not even close, the straw goes all the way to the bottom of the bottle and theres only a tiny bit which I put into the next bottle. Definitely multiple ways to get the job done though.

 

You could pump all you can until you're down to the last bit you can't pump. Then measure what's left. Then just add that amount to what you want to pump into the transmission. Assuming you'll have the same amount left over, you should be able to get the right amount into the transmission.

For instance, if you want to add four quarts exactly, and you have two ounces left in the last bottle, just start with 4 quarts and 2 ounces.

 

It really doesnt matter that much since after adding 4 quarts you'll most likely be over filled when doing the check procedure and lose the fluid anyways.

 

That's what I was thinking. No need to leave an ounce in the bottom of four bottles -- just keep emptying them into one.

 

Very true. The pump will get almost everything out. One could then pour the remnants into a cup and use a small funnel/hose to pour that remnant in.

when using the temp check method, i intentionally put in an extra half quart and the perfect amount of extra drained out

 

Bingo! If you're planning to get it up to temp, check it, then drain to level, it wouldn't matter.

A lot of Youtube videos just show to add exactly what you drain out, and I assumed that was AZBoatHauler was referring to.

 

Once you have the funnel out, just use it to pour all 4 quarts.
Many ways to get this done.

 

This is true, I made sure fluids were same temp and did a volume replacement first time.

Second time I did the same but also did the temp / fill check. About 2 ozs came out which made me feel rather proud.

 

Not a lot of room to hold a container to pour. I agree it’s possible, however its really easy to have the funnel hose pop out (done it).

my first time i rigged a funnel/hose to the engine bay. That was sketchy just hoping the hose didnt pop out lol

 

Hose up to the engine bay. All the room in the world. I do have my son monitor while I pour. Haven’t lost a drop yet.

 

Seems like the easiest way provided you find a way to secure the hose so that it doesn't come out of the fill hole.

 

Just stick about 2” in and don’t yank on the hose when pouring.

 

Not how the pros seem to do it

 

I use a clear rubber hose, it fits the fill plug snug and has never come out on me. Shove the funnel on the other end and fill.

 

I stand corrected on the temp. You are correct. The trans temp I said, I know I saw it some were for the tundra, so went off of that until I recently did mine and saw the pdf from Toyota. Could have been an older video, don’t know. The temp gun though, I wouldn’t trust.

 

Joe333x: Can you or another member please confirm that it is okay to measure Tundra (2019-2021) levelness at the ATF pan for the fluid level check. I cannot locate the post/forum, but in it a member stated the Tundra ATF pan isn't the same depth/height at each end, i.e. pan bottom angles upward from back to front, and so it shouldn't be used to measure truck levelness. From some of what I've read they say to measure for Tundra levelness along the frame, front to back and also side to side. I've also read the truck bed may possibly be used for checking level. Not sure, but looking for clarity. Just installed a cooler kit and the ATF level check is my next step. Thank you.
