No Sir. Only better mpg in the city. Only a true plug in hybrid would have an advantage at highway speeds. A non plug in hybrid need the regen energy from slowing down to help recharge the battery. Energy that would have been wasted by braking is used to recharge the battery.

Actually the majority of the battery recharging is done by the ICE. The regen braking accounts for a very small portion of charging. The proportion depends largely on how much braking you are doing. But even in city driving it is still largely achieved by the ICE.

And yes, the mpg on highway will be better with the hybrid drivetrain over the standard ICE drivetrain. Not a lot better but a bit. You can see this across the fleet with their EPA ratings.

While the implementation of the hybrid system in the tundra is a little different than the other hybrid vehicles (electric motor between the ICE and transmission) it is not that different. The traditional hybrid motor is part and parcel with the transmission. So whether they are all together in one housing or two attached together the principal is the same. Where the tundra is truly unique is the absence of a separate motor for the non dominant drive axle of the 4WD/AWD system. In most cases with the sedans and SUV the primary drive is FWD. So the motor in the transmission handles the propulsion. In AWD versions the rear axle has a separate motor where the differential would normally be. So with the Tundra having just one big electric motor and a mechanical 4WD system makes it unique. Will be interesting to see how it drives and performs.

Yup your right. My mind was thinking traditional hybrid but the Tundra is not using regen through braking. My.point though is that there is very little difference in an mpg advantage and the extra expense and complexity plus the hit at trade in time on an older hybrid and you will save in the wee bit of mpg advantage.

Just fo add to the discussion. If ICE is used to charge the battery isn't that really the same as regen braking? Your foot is off the throttle, engine braking is being used to slow down the vehicle and charging the batteries. If you apply the brakes would the truck shift to a lower gear to help slow the vehicle down and take advantage of ICE for regen? ICE on its own would seem like a very inefficient way fo charge the batteries.

Do we know yet if the larger fuel tank comes standard on the SR5 with TRD Offroad?

I heard that it may be the 17th somewhere. That said, I asked my dealer a question a while back and he noted that Toyota Canada took their spec sheets down so he couldn’t answer it. Out of the blue yesterday, he was able to answer my specific question so it made me think that he might have received prices (along with the spec sheet again).

My dealer told me not to expect a massive price increase based on other recent Toyota redesigned models. He thought around a few grand, maybe up to 5 grand at the time. I think that might be a bit low given the current market conditions and supply issues, but thats what his gut feel was.

My personal guess is that a Limited Crew Max 3.5L (non hybrid) will be around $65K.

Are you sure you are talking about Canadian prices?

Lariat is in the 70s now, granted some dealers now are giving may be $1-3k off listing.

XLT with 300A (most basic package):

    Platinum:

Limited is pretty much mid 90s all day long.

I'm chomping at the bit for pricing but also the EPA fuel economy of the iForce Max compared to the iForce.

Yeah Fuel economy numbers would be great, but probably not helpful without the cost of the hybrid. I'm guessing March for that.

Since we already know the hybrid will me more expensive than the non-hybrid, my point is that if the fuel economy is only slightly better than the non-hybrid I wouldn't care what it cost and would just stick to the non-hybrid model. I personally don't care about the additional torque and already don't like that it reduces the payload due to the weight of the hybrid battery etc.

My thoughts exactly. Unless Toyota’s goal was to significantly increase gas efficiency with the hybrid rather than increase HP and torque, I see no personal benefit to going hybrid.

The hybrid was designed for power and torque. The fuel economy is considered a bonus.

That's my point - for my personal use, I have no use for increased power and torque but I would have appreciated a far better fuel economy, which from rumours will not be the case. Toyota has built it, as you said, for power and torque at the forefront with (again rumoured) little difference in fuel economy, so for ME, this does nothing to sway me to the hybrid vs the regular iForce.

So this appears to say the SR5 sport and off road will only come as double cab 6.5' or crew max 5.5' bed. I hope not!

$56,290 for the TRD off-road crew max. Over 10% increase! Does anyone know where to find the spec sheet on the Canadian trims? Sunroof? Heated steering wheel? 8 inch screen on TRD off-road?

Is it really that much of an increase? I'm reasonably sure MSRP on my truck was about $53k, so prices on the new one seem to be in line with the previous gen to me.

Yeah, it's not as bad as I was thinking. I was expecting over $60K for the SR5 crew max TRD Off Road. I might actually end up buying one in a year or so.

Not as bad as I was thinking either but what the heck do I know? Not much! Now I'm eagerly awaiting December 3rd so I can configure the model and trim with the best payload, largest fuel tank and long bed. I figure I need at least a 1500 lb capacity. Maybe the SR5 DC 4WD with hardly any options? I don't care about modern tech, convenience and luxury features.

The 21 tundra crew max TRD off-road was $51,730 the TRD off-road premium was $54,740. The prices are still on Toyota Canada’s page. The premium had a sunroof, I don’t think we can get a sunroof on the TRD sport or off-road. Still not terrible pricing for the added features.

There was an old spec sheet kicking around but the new one is being closely guarded. Supposedly it was only provided to sales managers to limit leaks.
