So I'm in the market for a new set of tires, gonna make the jump to 35s, a 285/75/r18. I was gonna get another set of falken wildpeak at3w since mine have been wearing great for over 50k miles and they are tough as nails.

So I checked the price.....$382 a tire, and I can get a set of toyo at3 for $358 a tire. Since when did falkens become more expensive than toyos? When I got my set of 275/70/r18s, I paid $226 a tire, that same tire is now $341.

I know there are material shortages, etc. But how is toyo cheaper now? I don't understand that part.

For a few months I was looking at a set of Yokohama G003, price initially 2 months ago at Discount Tires was $267, then they went up to $321 (where I got them with a 10% off coupon, ($289)), then a few days after I ordered them they were up to $360.

I went to the DTires and was told shipment on Yokohama tires was way behind!!

Yes everything has gone up and continues to rise. The rise in prices from food to car parts is astronomical with prices still climbing. Not a good deal. I put on a new set of Michelin LTX and it hurt!! But they are on there and will last for awhile. Good luck!

just be thankful the brand and size you want are available. Up here in the great white north i searched for 10 weeks and eventually had to drive 150 miles to get toyo at3's on my rig.

you looked at used tires? Can get some pretty good deals.

I know not ideal for most people but is an option. I lucked out last year, (4) Nitto Terra Grappler G2's with less than 8K, no plugs, discount tires cert paperwork for $200, already balanced. Been running almost year and not a single issue.

I was looking at those too, they're only a half inch shorter than the 285 75s, but they're wider, and I'm wanting the tall skinny tire look. The price isn't a deal breaker, just really surprising how much they went up!

Since this turnaround is gonna go well into December I'm looking at doing a few more mods as well, we've been on standby for 3 weeks, they're just giving away money at this point :bananadance:

Here's my little honey hole for tires. I can usually find something in 17" quantities of 4 or more.

Not sure what Milk has to do with it, but has the price of Soy and Almond "milk" gone up too?
    If Yes: Inflation.
If No: Buy Soy and Almond "milk" instead.

A little insight on the tire price increases - in short, it is going to get worse.

I purchase fumed silica at my company which we use in our manufacturing process. This material ultimately comes from silicon metal - where they've seen 300x price increase in the last few months (was paying $2k-$3k a ton, now paying $8k-$10k a ton). So, what does this have to do with tires? Tires have silicone as an additive to keep them flexible...the big three producers in the US of these silicon/silica/silicone (think tires, caulk, computer chips, etc.) told me some months ago that if you need tires, you'd better buy them now.

Add to the pain that U.S. Customs issued a Withhold Release Order (WRO) due to suspected Forced Labor on all products from a Chinese company that just happens to mine some 30-40% of the world's silicon metal. This WRO applies to the raw ore as well as any products produced down the line, so there is no de minimis amount that could effectively pass through Customs and enter the commerce of the U.S.

What about shoes? LMAO. Love this place. This thread might make it to the all time greatest threads thread.

    Back to tires....

For people looking for factory sizing, check out Craigslist or FB Marketplace for take offs. I heard about the tire shortage early on this year and started looking. I found some factory take offs that looked brand new (wheels and tires) for 800.00. I then took these over to discount tire and purchased the certs for them. Sold my old pitted out wheels and worn out tires for 500.00. So for 400.00 I have basically new tires and wheels.

Right now Discount Tire is doing black Friday deals up to 160.00 off, and usually there is a military discount for those who have served.

At the time of my CL tire/wheel purchase, these tires were 250.00 each around 4 months ago. Now....

I'm surprised ammo wasn't brought up.....but anyway

I believe I'm gonna settle on the falkens again, I've abused mine and they've been great, I've ran over stuff that I just knew was gonna puncture my tires, and they've held up great, so no need to change. I almost got 2 years out of them, so that's plenty enough for me.

My buddy just got some Yokohama geolander x-mt tires on his duramax and I love them, but they don't seem practical since I rack up alot of miles. But boy is he pressuring me to get a set.

Fwiw, I think those Falken's are now made in China. Pretty sure same holds true for the Yokohama GO15's I just bought. 285/75 18's x5 $1500 OTD at DT. Was quoted $1308 back early summer and they were on back order, just thankful to finally get something else finished. Can't wait to see this bubble pop!

I am in the exact same position as you. I knew I was going to need new tires before winter and wanted a set on the Falkens. They have been awesome on my wifes 4Runner. I remember getting a quote for a set on my truck during the summer and it was about $1200 installed out the door. My wife's 4 plys were $800 out the door. I got a quote yesterday from the same shop for 275/70/18 At3ws and it was going to be $2200!

Now I don't like to pay full price for anything so I've been looking for tires elsewhere. Same set at Walmart is $312 a tire. Discount tire will match that price. I ended up calling my local Toyota dealership of all places and got them down to $1400 installed out the door so that's what I'm going with. A little more than I wanted to spend but my fault for not pulling the trigger in the summer. Moral of the story is shop around. Supply chain is garbage right now so you have that working against you too. 4 Wheel parts had the tire on their website for like $320 a tire. I called and the guy said that was a lie and they were out of stock company wide. Every shop I talked to had to order the tires. From the sounds of it they all use the same supplier, so that adds to the bottleneck and price jump. We'll find out if my tires actually come in or if my quote was a fairy tale...

If you like BFGs Costco has them all on sale. I think $200 off a set.

I will say that difficult to find: 120/170mm wide 17” off road tires for motorcycles are more expensive than i was expecting, considering they last 6k miles.

almost worth buying a set of wheels for road tires and only taking knobbies on trips.

Clearly, goodyeaR tires run better than Dunlop's. End of the day it's still a bunch of rubber.

That’s why I bought a set of Mickey MTs this past month. Didn’t really need new tires yet but saw the writing on the wall. Plus 4WP had a set on the floor display and did not realize they were not allocated. When I inquired about them the clerk was like. “I’m sure their allocated”. But the look on his face after he looked them up was priceless. They were also on sale so I immediately jumped on them.

It is smart buying and contributing to the issues. Fixed it a little better!

Nashville is really good at this kind of “smart” buying. All you have to do around here is whisper that there might be a fuel shortage in the next week or so, and voila!—the next day every gas station has lines around the block until all the Krogers and Shells are dry and the Mapcos have raised their prices by a dollar. People will buy more gas than they needed “just to be safe”, putting gas in barrels, trash cans, and giant bags in their trunks. These people are “smart”.

If you actually need tires, that’s one thing, but if you’re buying to have them before you need them, it seems to me that it’s not much different than filling a giant plastic bag in your trunk with gas during a fuel scare.

Just purchased a set of 4 BFG KO2's for $1,640 OTD. Originally it was $1,740, but tire discounters were good to me. TD also patched a hole on my wife's car for free, big reason I went back and it's 2 minutes from the house. Very service driven company from my point of view, don't see it much these days.

Bought these tires two other times (2015, 2018), both roughly around $1,100. mounted, balanced, alignment.
