Wobble at 55 mph

So... new truck owner here... Recently purchased a lifted 2013 Tundra, 124K miles. I noticed a significant wobble at 55 mph right away. Dealer had the tires balanced, didn't help. I took to a specialty offroad shop; they originally thought it was a balance issue as well. Once they got the tires off, they determined that the tread was worn so unevenly (almost bald on the inside tread of a few) that they couldn't get a proper balance without new tires. I purchased new tires (at a separate shop) and the wobble is still there even after install and balance. Wobble is really only right around 55, I feel it a bit at 45, nothing over 60-65. Offroad shop said wheels were not bent, brakes were good. Tire shop suggested an alignment, which I will try next (they don't do them). Anything else I should be looking for/trying? Could it possibly be related to the lift/suspension? A few people have suggested that without providing specifics.

 

I’m having similar issue with my 2013 Tundra. There’s a wobble when I get up to speed. My tires have tread, wheels are balanced. I’m confused.

 

Do you run wheel spacers? That was the issue I had at the same speed.

 

Just because your tires are brand new doesn't mean you don't have one out of balance. What tire model and size did you buy? Also, one could be slightly out of round. I discovered this is the case with one of my tires, and I get a very similar wobble to what you describe.

 

I will get back on the tires but what are spacers?

 

I don't think so... not something I'm familiar with. Would offroad shop or tire shop have mentioned this? Or is there a way to check? By the way, I see you are in Breck, my hometown

 

Falken Wildpeak A/T3w, LT295/70R18 I'd like to believe they balanced them as they said...

Probably need to get a road force balance instead of the normal spin balance. Might be the problem.

 

A severely heat warped rotor will wobble at that speed without touching the brake pedal. I had that on my 2013. Fixed it with a new set of StopTec Sport cryo treated rotors.

 

I'll have to look into this... I'm pretty sure they checked the brakes as well as rotors, but I'll confirm.

 

Too expensive and crowded these days...

 

You definitely need an alignment for the uneven wear pattern. If your wheels are larger than 35" you could possibly need some UCAs, but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet. Most often the Tundie vibration at 55/60 mph is due to needing a road force balance that @poheller mentioned. I won't get into it here (this issue gets covered often), but it costs about 25$ a wheel, and is well worth it.

 

Yeah it was what ya make of it. Definitely crazy now but hey, I ski or bike every day all year so I can’t complain.

 

Thanks! Tires are 34" I think... Going to look for a shop that does both alignment and road force balance. Hoping the combo takes care of it!

 

Take a book with you . A road force balance on 4 wheels takes a bit, it's labor intensive, thats why they charge extra for it.

 

What ever happened to those? Expierencing the same thing. Just bought this truck from the dealer. Went and had alignment and wheel balanced same small sterring wheel wobble

 

I dealt with front end end wobble it can be many things, rack n pinion bushings or slop between rack n pinion, lower A arm bushings, cam tabs, rear shackles seized, "air bags in the rear not set right", Tire cupping, un even balance of load, shocks / shock bushings, brakes, un aligned, crappy roads, ect its a rabbit hole. So I ask... 1.) any noise 2.) alignment sheet specs 3.) do you have air bags in the rear or had 4.) what environment did your truck see it life before your? maybe investigative work of what the frame looks likes , post pics of bushings and underside.

Edit: there may be a few people who out rank me but I was unlucky and hit every thing on thing on a suspension rebuilt and will help with diag to figure out what's wrongs, what's you level of mechanical ability? level 1 "I'm scared of a screw driver to level level 10 I'm a master mechanic but not familiar of Tundra's , level 2 is I understand but don't have tools or desire and level 8 is I can follow any YouTube tutorial to good results and level 9 is no ASE certs but will make a master Tech cry if had a chance to pursue the path.

 

I had a similar wobble, changed tires, got an alignment, and it never got better. I just decided to live with it, but when I replaced the original 15 year old front struts, the problem went away.

 

Thanks for the comfort! I feel pretty mechanically inclined. I actually get excited thinking about some of the mods I see on here lol. I would say I am a level 6!
Truck is doing better today maybe it needed to settle ; )
