Supercharger ????

Now that both harrop and magni has released their kits the 20-21. What’s your guys opinions of either kit? I’m looking to purchase one I the next few weeks for my 21 pro. Not necessarily looking to make the most power but more concerned with over all reliability.

I know the Maggie is considered OEM design, but I don't think that matters much with regard to reliability. Reliability will be mostly affected by how much you push the engine's performance and what other ancillary upgrades and mods you make on your vehicle.

 

I just watched that video. I’ve been leaning towards harrop. I don’t anticipate bashing my truck because it is my daily driver so breaking things isn’t really a option. Just wanting to maintain the factory reliability end of the truck

 

There are several +100K miles members that have blowers on their Tundras with no issues, some as high as 300K.

I don't want to read too much into your "maintain factory reliability". IMO, you are sacrificing some reliability for performance. Its not performance for free. Stay up on your maintenance and stay sane with your tune and you should be fine.

Both blowers get you to around ~550HP before you need to start looking at making other major upgrades to the engine and transmission.

YES! I had one in my 2017 and NEVER LOOKED BACK. Unfortunate events caused someone else to total my truck. I am definitely saving for a new one on my 2021. I had zero issues and the Magnuson had a full 60k warranty. I also had it installed by a local Toyota dealership which created another win win.

 

I want to do it too, just can't stomach the poorer gas mileage, and higher per gallon prices.

I've had more of a loss on City driving. Highway is about the same depending on the length of the trip; the longer the drive the closer to stock MPGs I get.

Basically expect to loose some in City driving and keep close to your Highway mileage. Flooring it on short trips will destroy your MPGs, I think the worst I've had was 6 MPGs gunning it around town.

 

This is my second Tundra with a supercharger. I get on the throttle on the exit on ramps and when someone wants to play on the highway, I'm still at a 20mpg avg, not bad, but if you want a supercharger you shouldn't be worried about MPG or the price of gas.

Dropped my '07 off to the shop Monday to get the refurb TRD SC installed. Hoping to have a big ass smile on my face with the extra power by the weekend.

20mpg? Really? I’m skeptical.

Is that hand calculated or just what it says on your dash? I remember reading that superchargers truck (edit: TRICK ) the computer, skewing that number super high when in reality they drop it quite a lot.

You spend less money at 20mpg on premium fuel than I do getting 14ish mpg on regular 87.

 

I’ve had SC for last 82K miles…no issues and it sure as hell doesn’t get 20mpg….hand calc 18 on the highway and 11-12 in town and I don’t beat on it.

Also, I don’t give a shit about gas prices…

 

Probably being lowered and the honey d front bumper spoiler/air dam is helping him get those extra 2mpg??

 

I'm at 17.5 -ish on stage 2. (hand calc & re-calibrated scanguage) recently got 18.1 on 4 hour trip back from Belton TX - slight tailwind.

I'm a stock 20' 1794.

I drive 60 on the hwy. I can see my hwy miles be 18.5mpg easily. if I have an uninterrupted drive to work (28miles)SE Houston.

My theory is...hwy cruising - the blower is in bypass, BUT the intercooler is still performing & the Harrop has a LARGE exchanger. so the motor is getting both the breeze of the spinning blower (in bypass) & getting rather cool air. These theories are mine & mine alone & are statistically incorrect.

now - the moment the bypass closes.....well...hello single digits.

1 more thing....my truck now stays in 6th gear over hills if I don't give it too much gas. it used to instantly downshift. don't know why. ex: coming out of Washburn tunnel I now stay locked in 6th going 40mph.

You will enjoy the S/C - all grown ass men do. as well as their wives.....and their kids.....

 

I'll say this...driving like an adult...the truck will rarely see the affects of either S/C.

it's only when say...you don't drive like an adult...then yes, the motor will see an increase in duty cycle.

Maybe, yet with the SC my dash computer says I too am getting 21 mpg…yet it somehow actually drinks fuel at the 18mpg rate on the highway when I hand calc. Same kind of deal around town.

So my computer is out to lunch when it comes to mileage, so I leave the display on temp since it seems to get that one right.

Some guys claim their hand calc matches the computer…ok, I suppose, but mine has never been close, before or after the SC.

Clearly, if I stay easy on the throttle it really doesn’t do much worse than when it was stock.

Of note, my 2005 Duramax never got as good as it was advertised either…mofo got 12-13 around town and 14 on the highway.

oh well…never has been about mileage…I like having the extra grunt…

 

my dash was fairly accurate until I tuned it/changed the injectors - one of those 2 hosed the dash calc.

now I don't even look at it...it says I get 26mpg AVG!

I'm glad the scanguage is able to be fiddled with enough to be accurate.

 

for all you Magnusen folks - get a good tune & don't rely on the stock tune.

Super Charger YES!!!! Please!!. It is on the list.

 

Great post. I think your theories make sense. Cruising at 60mph seems to be the key to getting the upper end of the Tundra’s fuel economy whether SC’d or not.

 

I can see a charger being Essential anywhere altitudes are above about 6000ft, especially 8000 and/or of course heavy towing at any altitude. Losing 18-25% of power is no fun when climbing at those altitudes whereas with a charger (turbo or super) the engine feels like it's at 0 elevation.

 

It is possible it is the air dam plus the other mods. The air dam on the new Tundra is able to change the CD by 20%. Lowering it could minimize the turbulent air between the vehicle and the ground especially if he's smoothed out the underside but lowering also reducing the front cross section of the vehicle.
