Ok so my 2020 SR5 4x4 is at 31K miles and since I tow a covered trailer a couple times a month I decided to go ahead and change all diffs oil and transfer case oil.

I went with the Ravenol oils in the kit from blauparts, wasn't expecting the bottles to have a built in tube, made 2/3 easy.

Front and rear diffs were a little nasty looking, definitely needed changing, T/C wasn't bad, but it got changed anyway.

So question 1: When i pulled the drain plug on the rear diff i got the expected metallic sludge (fines) but also there was 1 shaving that was maybe 1/4 inch in length. Diff doesn't make noise and this was the factory fill. Anything to worry about?

Question 2: For those of you who have used the Ravenol MTF-1 75W85 oil is there an easy way to unscrew the lid to get a pump in? I tried and they seemed to be locked on after they were threaded on in the factory. I was able to get one off but i had to pretty much destroy the cap. (More on why i had to do that later)

Question 3: For the rear diff and transfer case i was able to fill using the built in tube from the bottles, life was good, then when i went to fill the front diff i was unable to position the bottle, and the tube was too short to get into the fill port due to control arms, so I had to use a oil pump https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DTS8N7P?ie=UTF8 now the pump worked fine, i just had to break the top of the bottle where the tube comes out to get it in since i couldn't figure out how to easily get the lid off. and there wasn't a lot of room to actuate the pump. Is there an easier way to fill the front diff? Maybe a longer tube attached to the tube from the bottle?

Ok i mis-spoke. I used the Ravenol 75W for the transfer case. The front and rear diffs got the 75W85

You might have spoke correctly and I might have misread it. Just wanted to clarify

    1. No, you’re good if the diff isn’t complaining.
    3. I use a funnel with a long flexible hose, pour some oil, do something else, check level, repeat.

so you fill from above the control arm using the funnel? I may try that next time if I don't pay someone to do it. I'm 45 and don't have a lift, crawling on the ground trying to get under there isn't as much fun as it used to be LOL

Also I forgot to mention. when i crawled under there to do the front diff it had oil on the outside of it. I was a little worried, but when I went to remove the fill plug it was hand tight from the factory, so i'm hoping that's all it was. i cleaned it up best as i could ( was just a light coating in parts) and will check it again after a few thousand miles to see if it still has leak. Didn't see any signs of leak, never any oil on ground, just some oil on front diff housing.

Might want to use a magnetic drain plug. It will catch small filings

The front and rear diff both had magnetic drain plugs. I cleaned all the swarf off them and thats when i found the small shaving. The transfer case has like old school drain plugs that go into the housing with a square drive.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents worth.

I have been using Amsoil synthetic products since I first discovered them in 1978 after reading an article in Road & Track on synthetic lubes. Put in several vehicles including an original Toyota 4cyl Truck and a Toyota T-100) I have found their products to not only be everything they claim but to exceed my expectations. I changed my oil, trans oil, front & read diff's, and TC to their products in my new 2021 Tundra Crew Max and, as usual, am very happy.

Check out their products and consider using them next time you change any of your lubes:

Amsoil is good stuff. I didn’t see any 75W for the newer transfer cases. Did I miss it?

Ravenol makes a 75w. Alot of guys here use reclines 75w as well. I'm about to switch to HPL 75w, which will have a better spec sheet than anything else available, you gotta call them to get them to make you a batch though.
