Show me your truck camping setup!

Rented this awesome rig this weekend from Outdoorsy.com. It really is hard to beat camping in Alaska.

 

Does anyone here have/run a cheap diesel heater with their setups? I’m looking at getting a self contained unit. I’ve used the mr buddy but the condensation and tip over hazard doesn’t appeal to me anymore. Love to hear your thoughts or some examples

Espar is also a manufacturer similar to wabasto
Semis (and guys in the north on pickups) have been using them for cab heat & keeping your engine warm for a long time. Safe and approved for use

 

Great job on the cap repaint. Curious, is it an optical illusion in this photo or were both the passenger side doors repainted also?

 

Both passenger doors are OEM paint.
Must be my 80$phone. Lol

 

So I have started my camper build this week by painting the topper to match my truck. I will be camping when I go racing with my car so it will be a 1 or 2 day sleeping camper. Maybe I will start camping more often just not to many places by me to go camping.

 

Nice ride! When I lived back east I managed to do a bike track day there at the Lightning course. Fun track.

Still a ways out but I have my rough fitment done of my camping setup. I've camped 6-7 nights in the empty bed so I can formulate my plan.

My topper has a flip up front window so I didn't want to raise my bed platform and limit my headroom. I frequently sit in the back of the truck to work remotely.

The right side has a big open dump area for pillows, sleeping bags & things that take up misc space. My propane stove fits in the top opening, all kitchen supplies fit in the lower opening (both on right). Cooler tucks in below. There is also storage for long awkward stuff. I still have to add misc bungees, hooks & specific storage for the regular supplies.


Left side is setup to be at wheel well height. There are storage cubbies both front and back. I will likely need to cut another hole for the middle long section.




Primarily, I am the only one sleeping in the back. But the next addition will be elevated sleeping slats in the mid section to elevate the bed to the height of the wheel wells (left section). I also have another pad that I will cut to fit over the left plywood section. This will allow me to use the bed in the low position primarily. But when I sleep more than one in the back, I can have the bed & entire left section at the same level with a full sleeping pad.

Lighting & building an angled back pad to make the mattress into a comfortable chair are next...

Thinking, engineering & planning for this has been so much fun!

 

This is an old post, but do you happen to have a link to the switches & dimmer you used? Did you just wire it same as a typical household 3 way switch? I like it!

 

Following, also is do your lights have a white mode also?

 

What awning is that? I really like the solid poles on the sides of the awning to make it stronger.

 

It’s been awhile so I don’t remember the exact model , but it was an ARB. I believe it’s the touring model. I researched it and then scoured google for a good deal. I know I paid under 200.00 . I think their touring model with no side shade is listed at 228.00. No complaints on it.

Yikes ! i just priced out those 'Four Wheel Pop Up Campers' . . . just got a major dose of 'Dude you're old' . . . . $20K starting price for a basic 'Hawk' model. Yikes! Guess I'll just stay content with my Snug Top.

Hmmm I never thought about bringing a rake camping before. That's new lol

 

It’s a game changer, I usually bring a leaf rake but I knew there wouldn’t be leaves.
I’m also a fan of bringing cardboard to put under the tent for insulation and it feels great on your knees!

 

We are really liking our Leitner rack and ikamper so far. I really like the height of the rack as well. I need more accessories but so far its great!

Another handy tool I started bringing camping a couple years ago is a set of loppers. They're worth their weight in gold when it comes time to gather/cut up firewood.

 

Used to bring those as well but then got this (see link) and they no longer come.

I’ve also been known to take my sawzall with a pruning blade, that works great too

 

Don't you bring your rake too? Heck, just load the whole landscaping shed. You never know

Sorry if not specifically Tundra but I built this out of my second gen RC Tacoma before it got totaled. Looking to do the same thing in a first gen Tundra hopefully soon when I find one.
