90% sure it'll be the transfercase actuator. theyre going to hit you with 10 hrs of labor to replace it.. order an Aisin aftermarket one and DIY it. theres a youtube video showing how to swap the actuator WITHOUT disassembling the whole transfercase

    That's what I thought.

Thought I had read that their electronics are not the best, but mechanical items like spare tire hoists are good.

Look on car-part.com. they have all kinds of d/c parts you can find. I use it a lot for my SHOs since a lot of the parts are shared between the standard taurus and d/c.

I mean, I would ask them to pull labor for the faulty diag on the ADD, the part is expensive as fuck. I wouldn't dispute it NOW, don't want to raise a stink, some guys take it personal. I'd dispute it on pickup when it's time to pay the bill. Seriously.

    ^^

SMP makes quality stuff, in fact, more than one OEM re-brands their stuff as their own. Good example, SMP makes the updated Vortec fuel spider for some of the late 90s GM C1500 pickups. SMP part is normally significantly less than GM OEM (AC Delco branded), but literally the exact same part. I think they only changed the rubber direct-port fuel hoses color for the GM part.

I'd tag again for JapaneseTruckDismantling.com here as well, if only to pay the extra 10-20% for something tested and part warranty or guarantee.

Called swope back. Diag shows rear ADD. They did as I asked. Diagnose, and stop. They said it was super involved to replace, and that those have to be timed with the front ADD.

Asked the manager to get me a part number, and also quote me to buy, and replace to see if you were correct Dan.

(After the manager had been out the last two days, and speaking with technicians instead, the manager knows far less in comparison.)

Swope says they tested the rear ADD, and it appears to be working correctly, but it's something not working inside the transfer case. I told them to let me think about it over the weekend, and I'll give them a verdict Monday morning.

@empty_lord does this sound like dealership hoopla or legit?

I miss talking to the technicians. They were prompt, and full of information. It was "let me put you on hold for just a minute, and I'll ask."

Instead of "I'll call you back in a few minutes."

Probably so. I was waiting on a reply from Dan before telling them to further diagnose or to release the truck to me.

I think you could handle the TCase swap yourself. You've done far more complicated work.

Used case is simple swap too. But may have a bad actuator too

They probably are being legit about it. The dollar figure is probably going to escalate. You have to decide whether this "convenience fee" is worth the trade-off of no time spent in the tent of pain. If you take it and do it yourself you will have a 2nd transfer case to rebuild and sell and recoup some of you $$$ or keep for future use.

I would do it myself but I don't have to deal with those temps.

Just to clear up some terminology and stuff about 4wd system as far as I understand it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The front differential has an actuator in it and that actuator engages the front driveshaft between the axle and the transfer case (ADD actuator) and you previously said that your front driveshaft did not spin freely in park or neutral so it does sound like that actuator may have been bad and that is most likely why the 4HI light flashed all the time because it didn't see the system coming out of 4wd all the way. The transfer case actuator (what they are calling the rear ADD) is the one that shifts the transfer case itself into 4HI (and LO I believe) if that was bad that would probably be why it would never shift into 4wd either. If the ADD actuator was bad but was staying in the locked position then that means the PO could probably still shift into 4wd so he didn't care that the actuator wasn't working. I believe the primary point of the ADD itself is to prevent wear on transfer case components.

Hope this all makes sense. @empty_lord can probably clarify if I got anything screwed up.

T case goes into gear first, then front diff goes after the t case sensor detects it’s in 4hi. Typically the actuator in the t case gets stuck in gear without detection and you end up with a shaft engauged but no working ADD. Actuator replacement will fix it once you put the rod back into the 2wd position

Ah I see. So ADD actuator was probably not engaging but the transfer case is stuck in 4HI.

im willing to bet the ADD actuator probably worked (albeit on borrowed time) if the transfer case actuator was working.

Just got off the phone with swope. @empty_lord was right. Quoted me for splitting the T-case and checking everything out. Never said a total, but it didn't sound cheap.

Instructed then to hold off, and I'll see about finding a used Xfer case.

Total as it stands right now is $1,708.67. Scheduled pick up for Monday.

    Monday, like, today?

Either way, if the truck drives w/o 4WD, get that thang home. You can fix it later. 4WD would be nice to have for the upcoming winter, but you can get there.
