Spare tire rod

I just realized that my 2002 Tundra has its lift jack and lug nut wrench but the multi-piece rod needed to lower the spare...is MIA.

Local junk yards have no gen1 Tundras (or Sequoias...I think they used the same rod) in their inventories. I found a couple complete spare tire kits on eBay but are freaky expensive. And being a cheap bastard, I don't want to purchase the complete kits that include the jack or lug wrench.

So, does anyone know of a source for a used lowering rod that doesn't cost a boatload of dough?

Huh. That specific kit says its for Ford/Lincoln models...but it looks pretty generic and might fit my gen1 Tundra. I don't see a similar offering from Dorman that says will fit a gen1 Tundra. Does that particular kit work for yours?

 

Yes. I bought it at O'Reilly's and they had it listed as generic. I've used it a few different times without issue.

Funny to read this, i just lowered my spare today to air it up, and I had to get that rod kit out. It worked fine but came apart once during the descent. I wasn't sure it was there it's been so long since i used it last. The spare only had 15 lbs. in it. Check the spare pressure once in awhile is the take away lesson.

 

That kit probably won't work. I bought one out of a Sequioa thinking they are the same but they are not. The hook at the end of the rod needs to have to flat pieces to install. Like this:

It's worked on both my tire drop down and jack numerous times. Either one works fine I'm sure.

 

The hook w/ a "flat" side isnt actually needed. As long as the hook fits in to and engages the spindle slot, you'll be able to turn the winch to raise/lower the spare.

 

Interesting. I have the same style rod and it does not fit my spare tire hoist. My hoist has flat parts for the hook to go into and the round part will not fit in it.

 

My slot is much skinnier than that (that's what she said). The rounded part will not even get close enough for it to fit. I will grab some pictures of it today or tomorrow.

 

Huh...weird. When you do finally get the spare down, can you post a picture of the winch spindle slot?

I just ordered a new spare tire tool kit from Amazon for $30. My spare tire needs to be cinched up a bit but I can't do anything with the wrong rod. I think I can still get a picture of it with out dropping it down. Hard to see, but mine looks closer to this. The rounded portion is too big there for I can't even get it started.

Thanks to the Brinkerro and des2mtn for this thread. I ordered off Amazon and it fits and works great. I did have to whack it a couple times to narrow the hook so it fit the slot (insert girlfriend/wife jokes here).

 

Shoot! Wish I would have seen this about a week ago. Found a piece of sharp metal poking out of my rear driver side tire. Went to grab the spare tire tools to drop the spare. Suffice it to say, I had everything BUT the stupid hook! Wound up having the truck towed to Firestone on Wednesday. Instead of paying $100 for the tow, I could have just spent $25 on the tool?

Lesson learned I guess.

Anyone out there bought a kit for a 2.5 gen? Need an aftermarket kit model # if anyone has one. I swear some shady mechanic or crooked cop jacked it to sell on ebay.

 

I get the shady mechanic thing, but why would a crooked cop steal your toolkit?

Anyway, pretty sure the part number for the full kit is 091110C010. Possibly 091140C010. You'd need to go to https://parts.toyota.com and plug in your vin, then punch in those numbers to see if it's a fitment match - you're posting in the 1st Gen forum, but you have a 2.5 Gen, I doubt they used the same assembly for 15+ years but could be wrong....

 

Funny i saw this post today, i JUST ordered that dorman kit for lowering my spare tire because i am too lazy to undo my kids incredibly huge and complex carseat to work on the back end of the truck.

 

Alright, gonna order one soon for uncle. The one he got from a different store didn't fit. Hope it will be delivered by next week as I'm coming over to help him install the suspension and exhaust from 4Wheelonline onto his current Wrangler project.

I was missing the jack assembley too. I bought a used set with the hook and I thought I was good to go. Nope, it appears I have some sort of Toyota anti theft devise on my lowering/raising assembley. 5 or 6 points so I need a female piece to slide over it, around 3/8's in diameter. Called the PO and he is clueless. Anyone know where to go with this. I would post a WTB ad but don't have enough posts and I found nothing on Ebay. Help.....

 

Pics would be helpful in determining what exactly you have going on.

 

Did more research last night and found that Toyota offered a kit that snapped into the standard cone which would then take a key that attached to the factory hook. Similar to a mag lug key but smaller. Too tight to take a picture but later this week I will attempt to remove this thing and takes some pics and report back.

You could probably get one at a JY for $20-$40, Toyota wants around $200 (p/n 091110C011).

If you search fleaBay for the older hyphenated version (p/n 09111-0C011) there's one for $150.

Maybe I need to start checking for and picking off jacks when I hit the yard next time.
