With all this baby talk, did any of you feel weird as me when they just let you leave the hospital with this living organism with absolutely zero training.
Like, “Here, keep this thing alive”.

 

They made us do some sort of “training” no clue what they were talking about. All the moms coming down from the epidural looked like we were at a clinic.

 

In Alabama, they just push you out the door with a Coke and a smile.

 

Yeah I thought they were going to test the tensile strength of the car seat straps and actually check all of that. Nope as long as the baby is breathing as we get into the car and bye!

 

My mom still has a pic of me getting put in the car by a nurse with a cigarette in her mouth.

 

wife and I have said that after each one I think. hell, even the dealer shows you some features of your vehicle before letting you drive it off the lot.

Really according to which year.

 

We started a public health course that was three one-hour sessions over the course of 3 weeks but the first two weeks were about the birth itself and my wife gave birth two days after the second session. So, yeah, we felt a bit unprepared. Being in NICU for 10 days was a bit of a blessing in disguise. After a couple days in the regular NICU unit, they had to transfer our daughter to a special NICU unit due to staffing issues. The advantage was my wife was actually able to stay with our daughter the whole time and I just had to commute back and forth. So we got to learn to take care of our daughter with oversight and guidance from the nurses.

 

They made us bring the car seat in and showed us how to adjust it and everything.

 

That was definitely a demanding learning experience.
But having a child in NICU is stressful enough.
Hopefully, everyone is happy and healthy.

 

Wait.....they didn't give you a instruction booklet?

 

They did let us keep that same swaddle blanket every hospital in the world uses.

I had a little different route... I had to sue the babymomma to get time with my son. I started the whole mess just after he was born (can't file on a kid that hasn't squirted out yet); but it took until he was just under a year old before I got unsupervised visitation. Between about 7 months and 11, she 'let' me see him a few times, but she was obviously just selling her good graces to the court. Anyway, that last day of court, when the final orders were stamped and the gavel fell, was a Friday. My Friday. When she realized after everything was said and done that I'd be picking him up and carting him off without so much as a whit of oversight, she freaked the fv(k out. Right there in court. Judge just grinned and shook his head.

I'd been incredibly immature when she met me. I explain I was a 17-year-old 25 year old, but a 26-year-old 26 year old. If you'd asked me at 25 which end of a kid the food went in, there was a 50/50 chance I'd get the answer wrong. But I have two sisters, both of whom had more than one toddler, and in the timespan between my original filing for joint conservatorship and that final Friday I'd become a diaper-changing, snot-wiping, open-wallet uncle. Even with all that, given that my head still hadn't fully recovered from all those years up my ass, it did feel a little weird me taking off with my own kid. But the look on babymomma's face as we left court was pretty priceless. He's 29 tomorrow, with 4 of his own.

I’ve never understood fathers that don’t fight tooth and nail to keep their rights.

As an immature individual myself, I don’t know how I would have handled it had my kids come when I was younger. But, I do know I would have tried my best.

Moms make the kids, but fathers mold them.

The funniest thing is the parents that raised their kids via televisions telling those same kids to not raise theirs via tablet.

Instructions? Training course? I always figured you just treat babies like puppies. Feed them, let them shit and puke a bit, tell them no occasionally and otherwise let them tumble around looking cute.

I'm getting the feeling here that it's a bit more involved than that...

You're not far off. Stick to a schedule, Don't let the baby sleep in your bed, fed baby's are more content, don't let your parents or in laws overrule your decisions. The rest is really fun. My son is 3 and I look forward to getting home every day.

 

Yeah, the little ones are a blast!
Even those first few words are cute.
Then they learn to form sentences and you become nothing but a dumb candy-machine.

See, I planned for this. I have a job where I'm out of town for 14 days and home for 7. I'll have lots of time to catch up on sleep.
