2006 4x4 with 74k miles selling for $29K

I see a local dealer ad for a 2006 Tundra 4x4 with 74k miles selling for $29k. Is the seller getting high?

 

In a normal world, absolutely. In this crazy used vehicle market, it is still high. There is no way I would pay that much for a 15 year old truck.

 

I can’t imagine a bank would even loan that kind of money for a truck that old. I’d guess a person needs to pay cash or have a large chunk to put down.

My truck was $45k USD brand new in July of this year and that included every thing you see. This used truck market is crazy!

It's a little crazy but maybe not as crazy as you think. If you've been paying attention to the market, mid 2000 Toyota's and Lexus with the 4.7L V8 are extremely popular now. Especially low mileage ones in good condition. They're reliable and robust platforms that are capable, comfortable, and the appropriate size. I think vehicles nowadays have grown to size that is somewhat of a turn-off to many. You could pay $29K for a 2006 Tundra with 74k miles or you could pay $29k for 2011 Tundra with 130k miles on it. Chances are that 2011 is a little more beat up. This is similar to the Landcruiser market. $29k will get you a clean, lower mileage 100 series or you could pay $29k for a 200 series Land Cruiser that likely has 200k miles on it. That and with the new Tundra pricing going to approach $60k - $70k is going to make low mileage first gens an extremely desirable platform going forward. I know that's one of the reason I'm looking at a first gen right now.

 

It doesn't hurt that the 1st Gen is considered one of the best trucks in the last 40 years. Can you picture a 20 year old F-150 with 90k on it selling for $20,000 or more?

 

And at this point I think people realize just how durable and long lasting the 1st gen is. The 2UZ used in multiple platforms like the GX, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser are proven. There's no reason a clean, low mileage example couldn't go another 10-15 years without much issue. Obviously the concern at that point would be wear items and things that get crusty just from time. Personally I'd rather have a 1st gen Tundra than a 3rd gen Tacoma.

 

Jordan is always very high on their pricing.

But for some reason they always get new trucks. And honestly not surprised. We had a members here with an 04 and 163k on the clock and he got close to 20k so 29k for a 73k truck i can see it. Makes me excited i own a 73k 1st gen now

Pretty much, this is it in a nutshell. These three comments.

I know some of y'all think it's crazy, but I don't need a damn school bus to pull the boat and get in the mud, nor do I need an SUV sized cab with a bed on it.

This value exists for the 1st gens because it's proven they're a unique offering: Drivetrain power and insane longevity by modern standards, super easy to maintain, excellent options & comfort, they fit in your typical garage and haul plenty more than the average person needs. Modern vehicles may check the box on a couple of those things, the 1st gen Tundra checks them all.

I got mine with 64-65k miles for 1/3 or less than what most of the 2nd/2.5 gen folks paid for theirs. I'm happy to know mine will last just as long or longer.

 

I’m probably much older than the average member here. I had a 2002 Tundra limited I bought it new and put over 200,000. Miles on it virtually trouble free.

I then bought a 2016 Tacoma new and didn’t really like it for numerous reasons. I didn’t buy a new Tundra because they just got too big for some things I do and narrow areas I have to navigate.

So, I looked for a first generation Tundra and bought one (2004) a few months ago for $25k. Limited 4wd access cab with 50 k miles and very nice. This was close to the price I paid originally for my original 2002. Seems like a lot!?

I have many collector cars. Old Porsches that sold for $4000.00 new in the 50’s and 60’s now worth well into the 6 figures. I don’t care what something sold for new. Inflation and manufacturers dictating what the buyers want drives me to many decisions that may seem irrational to those looking at only price or gadgetry. I look at value. Value is what we really want in objects or in life and experiences. The old Tundra had value to me.

I love my new/old 1st gen Tundra, hated the Tacoma which is going on the trading block soon. I have new vehicles and old vehicles and the one truck I really loved is my old Tundra so I bought another. I can buy what I want… so I did.

i’m not really loving the color “white” yet so trying to figure out wheels etc…. I enjoy seeing all you young guys buying a truck and learning and building them. Reminds me of hot rodding and building stuff for fun with my friends just to do it and maybe burn some rubber. So many people out there who can’t change a tire, glad you guys are carrying on, there is hope.

No, actually thats a pretty rare color. Maybe the most rare color of first gen.

 

I've been seeing 2018s selling over $50k. To me that doesn't make a lot of sense, people are paying more than a new truck. I don't see a scarcity of new Tundras on dealer lots here.

I don't think that anyone would pay more than $20k for a gen 1 Tundra with low miles. I have a 2005, and it can hardly tow my 23 ft boat. Lol.

 

Look on BaT there are plenty that have sold for well over $20k with low in the last two years. Someone is buying them and paying those prices.

 

This company Jordan is based out of Portland Oregon. They post all over the US on Craigslist. They are not in Orange County. Their phone number is 503 which is NW Oregon. The map shows the location and that NE marine dr is in Portland Oregon.

They are not the only dealer in that area who have been buying up all the Toyota’s and Lexus’s that have the 4.7L V8. M&M investments and PDX motor sports are other one. About two years ago there was a few of them that started to buy every one with the 4.7L and marking the price up $4-10k over KBB value. None of them sold for those prices. They sat for sale for months. I saw one for sale for almost a year. The idea behind doing this is to manipulate the market.
Another thing I’ve seen is they post these trucks for sale at these prices and don’t actually even have that truck to sale. Another form of market manipulation. Call on it and ask if that vehicle is for sale and if they can send more pictures of it that aren’t posted. Ask to see a picture of the under seat storage area or the bottom of the engine or transfer case. If they tell you that one just sold but they have this other one for $4k cheaper… you get the idea.
What also happens is people selling private party start to search to see what their truck is being sold for and see these dealers asking $18-29k and they think my trucks worth $24k or ask $18k for one that has a branded title.
