I was backing into a parking spot this morning at work and felt/heard a bump in the steering, the wheel was loose for a second and then stiff as a board. Was able to back up and then pull forward into a different spot, but thank god I workout. Is this likely a pump?

No codes thrown. No fluids leaking (yet)

    Specs:

    2021 CM
    No mods other than cosmetic.
    Never been offroad
    2500 miles

    Help.

    1-800-Toyotacare and get a loner.

This would be the earliest PS failure that I can ever remember on here. Keep us updated on what the techs find.

What he said. That particular pump must've been manufactured on a Monday or something. LOL Hopefully it gets sorted out quickly!

That sucks. I work about 10 minutes from a dealer so not terrible. Anyone know if will they tow it for free or am I expected to muscle it there?

I'm guessing there is a check valve ( correction )relief valve in the system that is stuck.

    Update:

Called Toyotacare and scheduled a tow. I live 20 minutes from where the truck is now and having it towed to the dealership where I purchased.

Everyone (insurance, Toyota Roadside, Toyota Warranty, Dearlership) is telling that a loaner is not covered by my warranty. That right?

Seems pretty sh@tty that I am stuck holding the bag on a brand new fing truck!

Only rental company in town is booked up.

She is. Just heard back. Trying to do me right so we'll see. They are out of vehicles but she's asking some managers if they have something I can use.

On a side nugget, just about lost it when I looked at the service update for the tow and it showed my truck 20 miles in the opposite direction from the dealership. Turns out it was just pulled off the truck and is at the dealership. If you ever run into that and have my ridiculous experience.

    Update:

Saleslady drove 25 miles to pick me up and take me to the dealership after work.

They moved my truck up the line to get a look at the issue and get parts ordered if needed.

    Diagnosis:

I am far from a mechanic, but here's what I think they said. Somehow the rack popped a seal and all the fluid ended up in the sleeve. They are replacing the entire rack.

Mechanic said that there are 292 racks on back order nationwide. Must be a bad batch of parts in the 21s.

Obviously covered under warranty. They ended up giving me a loaner 21 Tacoma SR Access Cab so I guess i should get a username on tacomas...

Figured it was a hydraulic issue.

however I would ask them to ensure that there isn’t a pressure relief valve issue in pump.

the seals popped because of over pressure or a defect.

Figured I would add my own current experience. My 2020 CM with ~ 20k miles seems to be experiencing the issue as OP. Was pulling out of a spot when I heard a thud. I began hearing some whining while turning but since this was new and went away after the truck warmed up (temps were in the 40s) I just assumed it was due to cold fluid. However fast forward to today 5 days later and I can confirm similar issues as OP both boots on the rack and pinion are soaked. The power steering fluid level was found to be near empty. While I had no issues with the wheel being stiff my only sign of issue was the faint whine when turning (similar to the whine when you reverse). I have an appointment with the Dealership tomorrow to have it looked at and fixed.
This was the power steering fluid when I checked it.

No idea, that's what he told me Wednesday night. When he called back Saturday, he was surprised that they had it. He said he made sure it was actually my truck that the tech was talking about.

    Final Update:

Got the truck back last night. Drives great, everything warranty.

Mechanic said that the issue was the tie rod some how pushed into the rack and caused a seal to burst letting all the fluid run into the boot.

They apparently replaced the entire cylinder because it is a closed system part or something like that.

Anyways, its fixed and i am not driving in a tiny taco anymore.

Good thing you got a steering rack, I heard that catalytic converters are a 4-5 month wait from Toyota.

The Recall notice says Toyota will start notifying owners is January. Hopefully we won’t have any issues and parts will be available.
