    What’s political about that? He simply said “given our current situation he would prefer something better on gas.” People are soft these days

    No, you read it right, but may have missed that the bold part was what I had edited in his quote. The "current situation" was what I used to replace his very pointedly political comment.

    To illustrate the point, I edited what you said in the quote and put it in bold. I did the same with his to try and show him how to not be hammered. He wasn't fast enough, though.
