Lower ball joints/part numbers

I’ve placed a few orders from Lewis Toyota in Topeka, KS and they are really good and priced well also.

 

Ditto for me with Serra Toyota of Decatur AL, and they've got a free shipping offer ongoing at the moment. Service is one of the best I've had with any dealership parts shop and discount is better than what I can get buying online from any of the local dealerships around ATL. Ok so I I did a little testing not sure if it's a good measurement but it's something. I straped the LBJ to a vise and I used a luggage scale to see how many LB it will take to start moving. It took about 25 - 25 lb to start to move . Also something to note is I haven't greased them yet most likely it will be less to move after I grease them. They do look and feel heavy duty.

 

They do look stout, unfortunately no way of seeing the quality of the part that matters. Did you see any reviews on these?

 

I look at every forum possible from every manufacturer. This was the only one I couldn't find any feedback. Most of the guys that tried the tough terrain have reported no issues. Some say its the same style as the high end Napa parts.

 

I've used Mevotech LBJ with the grease fittings, and they lasted for 30k miles. It broke while I was in the desert, which was not good at all. I then used Toyota LBJ. I really don't see the need to buy the ball joints with the grease fittings. The grease will dry out quicker than you think, and the air comes in and damage it. If the ball joints are good and the dust boots are tight, such as Toyota, then they'll last for more than 100k miles.

 

That actually sounds pretty good and considering the price you paid, I would hope they'd hold up.

I wish I could say that of Mevotech's LCAs which have poor quality bushings and don't hold up for more than a couple years.

 

Let hope the AC Delco LCA I'm about to install hold up.

 

I just installed OEM lower ball joints today (along with 5100's) and replaced the moogs that were installed by the PO. Unsure of actual mileage but it is believed to be 10k or less. The moogs felt pretty rough moving them back and forth but I'm not real sure that's a great way of determining wear. Just wanted to go ahead and replace them since they were always on my mind.

I ordered the OEM from whichever mcgeorge site gave free shipping and I got both joints and 8 bolts for $190 shipped.

As a side note the moog sway bar links that were installed with my new frame about 700 miles ago look pretty well trashed already so just putting that out there. Both bushings looked about like this. No lift on the truck until I installed today.

 

Did you buy the kit from McGeorge that comes with everything?

 

No all separate.

 

Those bushings don't look bad to me. They take huge loads and being mishaped is normal. The rubber still looks supple. If they torque properly I would leave em. If the the ball joint isn't bad I say leave em till the shaft breaks or they make noise or the bushing is too flat to allow proper torque.

 

Yeah I'm just rolling with them. Not really a huge deal. Just thought I'd show it. I'm sure the slight lift I just added will only make them worse though

 

aftermarkets tend to be decent enough for stock applications. but lifted? they wear out fast. at least thats what i've noticed.


that and lifted the aftermarkets always seem to make steering effort higher.. granted my experience was on my tacoma. but same ball joint setup so tundra is likely the same

 

So I ran into this on the Facebook group which I figured I'll post here snice we where talking about me being the Guinea pig testing the ttx tough terrain LBJ.

Get the OEM bolts to replace. And I’m a fan of OEM for everything on our trucks that can’t be modified to be stronger.

I’ve heard that Solo will soon produce LBJ’s for those of us that need more strength. Waiting…

The parts counter at the dealer can generally let you know what the part numbers are for the simplified diagrams you're probably referencing.

 

Ouch! Is that the second time that has happened? I see that fender has been swapped.

 

It happened exactly like that to me when using aftermarket Mevotech or Moog with the greasable fitting (I forgot the exact brand). They're just used for about 30k miles. Won't use aftermarket on critical parts again.

 

Was that at T2S?!

 

Can someone confirm if the 04006-62134 LBJ kit works with the 04? The part kit was for the LBJ recall.

I’ll be doing my LBJs soon along with new upper arms and a shock rebuild. Do we need new dust covers to do this LBJ job correctly? PN 43346-60011. I just saw them on the EPC, but haven’t heard much mention of them. Thank ya’ll in advance.

 

Nope, only once. Basically, I think one of the bolts came loose (couldn’t figure out the source of the noise, but it was definitely tied to that passenger front corner and more prevalent with higher speed). Then the loose bolt caused vibration (and the noise tied to tire revolution) until the stress caused at least one bolt to sheer. It happened on the trail and I had excellent mechanical support and ingenuity— woulda been no bueno if it had happened at freeway speeds.

The fender was swapped previously when we went long-travel. This break caused a small tear of the firewall— I can’t actually see it, but since, I get air and noise in the cab. It’s a play truck, and still safe to drive on and off road, so I’m not sweating it.

Yeah, the only way I’ll go away from OEM on critical components would be for some purpose-designed (heavier duty than OEM and designed for racing, basically). So I’ll be in line for whatever Solo comes up with; currently, my OEM LBJ’s are the weakest point in my set-up.

T2S last year; only a few of us went. This happened on Greasy Spoon. Bruce et. al. squared me away on the trail… guy is a savant that remembers a million details— sent everyone to cannibalize their later-gen Toyotas for seat bolts, used those to patch me up for the trip back to pavement AND 500 miles home.

So… yeah, clearly, I vacillate between stuff I would never do (buy lesser-quality aftermarket replacement parts), and crazy stuff that should be totally risky… but Bruce says it’s fine, so… let’s do it! (My grandfather was the same— applied American Ingenuity to solve any problem, so I was raised to appreciate such problem-solving by those capable of making those connections.)

Dust covers are NOT needed. They should come already on the new LBJs.

I did not know that and assumed they didn't, so I ordered them and now have extras. If for whatever reason your new LBJs don't come with them, you can have mine.
