Clearly you've never been in a tent in northern BC when a grizzly has decided to wander into camp at 0300...

 

It was years ago - my step daughter went to Port Aransas with some friends to stay over night. One of her friends boyfriends was being verbally abusive and she was worried so I drove out to pick her and another one of her friends up. I want to say I left at 11pm and it was like a 4 hour drive there. When I got there, the dickhead wasn’t around but I picked up my daughter and her friend, and had them sit in the truck while I walked down to the beach. I figured if I drove 4 hours, I’m gonna see the ocean. It was eerie, the waves were really coming in and just crashing. It was super dark (like no moon dark) and nobody else was on the beach. I don’t scare easily (and it was less of a scare and more of just a creepy, “you are not safe” vibe) but the sheer power and the feeling of isolation got me I guess. I remember the chills up and down my spine.

Anyways, I walked back to the truck, and drove another 4 hours back home.

Also, you all have the nice side of the gulf. Port Aransas still has the Mississippi Mud colored water. I grew up next to the clear blue waters of Lake Michigan. I like to be able to see what’s going to eat me.

 

Nothing worse than what can stumble into your tent, on a beach in Panama City, during Spring Break.

Yep, we've got a lot of bears around here too. I'd rather run into a rabid Grizzly.

 

I always have a 12ga with Federal Deep Penetrator slugs or my 45/70 with 405gr pills close at hand when in the bush.

I'm planning to build a dedicated bush gun based off a Mossberg 590. 14" barrel, ghost ring sights, red dot, light and side saddle.

 

With a sign on the door, for the bears, that just says 'Moriras'.

It has taken me 20 years to get my wife and kids to understand that the good knives stay the hell out of the dishwasher. I still can’t keep them from occasionally leaving them laying in the bottom of the sink with stuff on top of them. For the most part it doesn’t happen, but at least once a week one of them does.

 

My wife doesn’t even touch these knives.
She has her own set.
She knows.
She makes fun of me about it constantly.

 

For me theocean waves and the flow of a river are almost hypnotic, visually. Give me a few beers or a shot and I can wax poetically about the connection across the waters

 

That’s about 45 minutes from where I used to live

 

Water connects us all.

 

Another kind of water watching that I’ve enjoyed is the big floods and huge PNW ocean winter storms.
Raised in AZ, I was there through several ‘200’ year floods and a couple ‘400’ year floods. Watching houses and trailers float by and interstate bridges go down is breathtaking. It’s like a kind of power you can’t express in words and nothing can stand against it. Similar to seeing giant logs tossed around like matchsticks when the big storms hit the coast up here. Walking the beach afterwards and looking at those trees stuck in the sand like massive pick-up-stick toys
