It's a theoretical 38 gal tank. The most that is usable is around 30. The empty tank warning light comes on around 26. I had originally thought that they installed the 28 gallon sensor in my 38 gallon tank. All due to the in-tank fuel pump that needs fuel for cooling. I recall it's a minimum of 6 gals. So, you're correct in that we do not have a usable 38 gal tank. Dumb design.

And yet there's a member here who put nearly 38 gallons in his.

To reiterate what we've already established:
The computer in the DIC that calculates your distance to empty is very conservative. If you want to put more fuel in your fuel tank, drive father before you fill up.

I don't get it either. Years ago even driving up the ALCAN highway through the rockies in northern Canada we were passing gas stations every 80-100 miles. When my fuel gage gets to about 3/8 of a tank, I start thinking about filling it up. I usually prefer to hit Costco about 8pm and usually have no problem doing that a day or two after that 3/8 reading. But if I am at Costco and by chance there is no line, I will fill up even if I have 5/8 of a tank. Like you said, no hero medal for being the all time empty tank champion.

You will burn up the fuel pump doing that. Not recommended.

Fully agreed. I always fill up at a quarter tank or more. I just don't see why every single new Tundra owner needs to come on here and cry about only putting 32 gallons in their truck at a time.

for me, as long as my computer says im about 570+ miles on my range, im good to go. That's a full 38 gals for me. I fill up when the tank is about 1/3. and gas pump usually indicates 22gals.

With my 2021, I never have seen 570 miles range on the system. Best being 514 and now it averages around 480.

I read somewhere that the range is based on your previous Tank Avg MPG before fillup.
my routes are 95% highway so my tank avg is always 15+ mpg.
cruisin at 65-70mph is my truck's sweet spot

Think of it as a Toyota “Safety Net”, to where when your gas gauge reads E you still have 6 gallons in the tank. 1: So, you don’t run dry. 2: So, you don’t burn up the fuel pump.

6 Gallons in our High Fuel Economical vehicles….. should take us another 78 miles. Let hope its not another 78 miles to the next gas station.

Even my 1991 Honda CRX Si which had a 12 gallon tank would show E at 8 gallons and I had ONLY driven 320 miles!!! Yes, those where the Exciting days, to fill up with 8 gallons and drive 320 miles. But that IS the saving grace with a 38 gallon tank and being able to drive 400+ miles before needing to even think about gas (being on the safe side).

I am always thrilled to see 520-580 miles on my cluster after putting in 28 gallons. Price here in Texas JUMPED to $2.95 per gallon yesterday. Has been sitting around $2.62 to $2.78 the last few months. AND yes, I was shocked when I went to Cal. last year and seen the $1 to $2 more per gallon.

    That’s my 2cents.

because it's a never ending thread and I just did my first fill up on my Tundra.

    - Range went to zero and gas light came on 1 minute after
    - Got 30.65 gallons in at top off. Gives me a 6-8 gallon buffer and a 400 mile range I estimate for freeway to be conservative
    - odo #1 is always tripped on fill-up so i know how many miles on my tank at all times.
    - Tundra keeps track of "tank mpg", so I wonder where i can see the mileage details on the tank without having to manually trip odometer

trip mpg should be in your entertainment system. Under the Eco tab if you have it.

I always find the average mpg on the Eco screen in the infotainment to be off but the trip mpg I get on the DIC when I shut my truck off has been bang on with my hand calcs so far.

Not sure how that relates to the experiences with a 38 gallon fuel tank, but I do know that @dirtydeeds sells the bullydog. Keith is generally really helpful and knowledgeable. You might try getting in touch with him.

Oof, I thought u want the range mileage for the tank, idk about the mpg. I only do short trips, so I don’t know which one is accurate. I always do hand calc when I fill up and write it on receipt.

There've been some threads on retrofitting the larger tank, and there are also some that have gone with even larger tanks in the bed. Transferflow I think?

Replacing the existing tank is my only option. I carry sheet rock and building materials. Long beds are great for that.. I’m thinking there might be more room because of the 8 foot bed for a large fuel tank down there idk ‍♂️

I am not certain the process would be the same on a 2016 vs the older 2nd gens, but here's a thread that might get you on the right path. https://www.tundras.com/threads/07-14-38-gallon-tank-swap-install-thread.27144/

So it appears that changes were made since my previous 2016. Appears you can go to about 33 gallons usage with 5 left. Previously it was when 10 gallons were left. I'll check my new 2021 on first fill-up coming soon.

took my first highway trip. 476 miles and gas light didn't turn on. Just refilled at 29.83 gallons. This puts the tank range at somewhere around 550 miles I estimate.
Putting me at 16.8 MPG for highway. The cars tank calculation was 17.0 exactly so it's pretty accurate. There are some stretches where i really feathered the throttle where the computer calculated 18.5 mpg for those 2 -3 hour trips.
