2018 4x4 Platinum Sequoia "Wife Wagon" - Build Thread

Awesome to hear! So you have a 2018 with the updated gauge cluster correct? You didn't lose any of the functionality in the screen between the gauges? I was concerned that if I switch out the head unit I will no longer have that portion of the cluster

 

The whole thing wasn't cheap, but I would pull the trigger all over again in a heartbeat.

You lose no functionality of the steering controls that control the functionality within the gauge clusters. In my 2018 all of that functionality on the right side of the steering wheel are gauge cluster options and everything on the left side of the steering wheel were strictly audio/call/stock HU options. I was able to the Maestro to program functionality to the left side of the steering wheel to function with the aftermarket Prioneer HU.

I have had 0 issues thus far. The screen is phenomenal, the unit literally woke up the JBL system (it sounds heads above what it did), CarPlay is a game changer, NAV using Waze/Google/Apple Maps is so much better... the list goes on and on. It displays TPMS and cluster data on the fly (don't see myself ever needing to use the cluster functionality, but it's cool I guess).

If you're going to spend this much money definitely pay the $25 for Crutchfield to assemble all of the harnesses beforehand. The install was still tedious, but made it SO MUCH easier. I couldn't imagine splicing together the amount of wires needed to piece this thing together. Crutchfields harness assembly service made everything plug'n play. This is by the far the best functional upgrade I have made to the Sequoia.

When I went thru the Maestro flashing process I noticed the entire right side of the steering controls is dedicated to the cluster, so when I flashed the unit I chose to only program the left side controls of the steering wheel on the Maestro unit. I lost no functionality of anything to do with the center cluster controls.

 

Thank you for the quick reply! I am definitely interested as the stock 2020 Head unit leaves a lot to be desired. I don't have the JBL system but I already swapped all the interior speakers added and amp and LCi7 to clean up the crap sound from the factory.

Were you able to keep the Rear entertainment system?

 

The RES works but you cannot watch it in the front. Video is only thru the overhead screen. Audio is thru the headphones or if you plug your headphones to the console in the middle. If you want to listen from the car speakers you just need to connect a male to male 3.5mm cable from one of thw headphones port in the console in the middle to the aux port in the dash.

More detailed explanation above, but yes, you do retain the rear RES. No, you cannot control it from the front HU, which we never did anyway since it has it's own DVD/Blu-ray insert and remote. Overall the HU is AMAZING. Kids can still operate RES independently and listen thru their headphones so I can jam out to Pandora thru Carplay on long road trips.

 

Thanks. One of the major limitations of me not upgrading the stereo was potential to lose the RSE. Since it still works and can be controlled by the remote, I may have to start looking into getting a new stereo now.

The Platinum comes with the center console in the 2nd row.

Can that center console be purchased and installed in a lower trim level?? Or, do you have to buy the Platinum to get it?

 

The Platinum second row captain chairs have built heater seats. The console in the center of the second row is there to hide the wiring for the heat function. I would assume you could buy the console and mount it into a Limited or SR5 if you removed the center portion of the second row, but obviously you wouldn't have the heat function.

 

Order placed December 30, 2020... I guess the wait is over. The freight company showed up yesterday unannounced and luckily I was here to sign for it. Almost 7 months to the day.

Sure enough. Took me 2.5 years to finish it. Platform, bridge and nest weren't all that bad but finishing out the house took some time. Its got an upper loft, heat/air conditioning, Wifi... great place to camp out for the evening.

Was up on the roof with a chimney contractor this afternoon and snapped a better pic.

Finally got around to painting and installing the TRD Pro running boards yesterday afternoon. These things are beefy and look phenomenal. Shout out to @Beau for the heads up on the issue with the exposed metal strip. I cleaned, masked, primed and painted the strip matte black. The stock plastic boards had a flared trim piece that covered the strip (the dimpled strip is present is the second image).

Overall, extremely happy with the construction and look of these. They give the Sequoia a streamlines look and aren't as clunky and obtrusive as the stock running boards. For the money, I'm not sure there is a better option.

Looks great and good job on the pinch seam. It definitely looks more complete than my rig....guess I'll go back in and touch up the seam at some point.

I did test fit one side to see how much the seam was going to show and if it was really going to bother me. After stepping back, it just looked incomplete, like it was missing a piece or the running boards were tucked far enough in. Masking and painting actually took the majority of the time. Bolting the boards up took only a matter of minutes.

 

Agreed. It’s funny, I verified with the dude I bought these from that his had that seam uncovered and unpainted. Seems like a bit of a foul on Toyotas part!

Loving the TRD Pro running boards, is this the right PN? PT767-0C200.

 

Went back and reviewed my Sparks order and yep thats it. Not cheap, but make a hell of a difference in look and they are sturdy as hell compared to the stock boards. They're slightly shorter and don't extend as far too, which I like. $670 shipped, which is a steal compared to the price of custom weld-on sliders and powder coating.

I just picked up a 2019 trd sport and wanted to change a few things out.
The 2019 model year seems like a weird one and most products only show a comparability with the 2020 and newer models.
I want to black out the grill in the front bumper like yours. Was that part replaced with the trd pro part and if so where did you buy it from? I am having problems finding that part online.

Most of the parts came from sparksparts.com. The grill is just the 2018-2022 TRD Pro grill. I also swapped out the lower grill, fogs and fog bezels. There is a separate thread that details park numbers for the most commonly swapped parts. The TRD Pro grill should be at the top of the list in that thread as I think it is the most commonly swapped part on these. Seeing as you have a 2018 and newer model you won't need the upper bulge part or any additional hardware. The grill should be a quick plug'n play swap.

Yes, the lower grill is the grill between the two fog lights at the base of the bumper. It came trimmed in chrome. I considered attempting to paint it, but just decided to order the TRD Pro lower grill and swap them out.

Did you use Toyota Part No.: PT948-0C200-02 for the rear emblem overlays? They show the only fit 2020 and newer.

 

Took me a while to find it as well. Part number according to my order confirmation is 52701-0C050.
