I was figuring I'd just have the locksmith come out to my house. I was hoping the have some kinda James Bond tool they stick in the lock to make a profile of the key. If not, I'll have to replace the ignition, then go to the dealership with title in hand, and I dunno about the fuel door.

It's classic supply & demand. The demand hasn't fallen off like the supply has. As such, all new cars are much more valuable. This isn't dissimilar to the housing market.

Being we have three vehicles, I have considered selling the Tundra (again  ) for a huge markup and driving Kelly's Audi through winter and pick up something in 2022. It's risky considering auto manufacturing isn't likely to even begin to catch up next year. But I can always scoop up a 3rd gen t4r for cheap or an e36 or any number of (rusty) 90s-00s vehicles to daily. Her WFH has been extended into 2022 with no target date for return to office. So I can likely make it work until spring without much drama.

Maybe I've just been poor my entire life, but I'm curious how the shortage is related to / fault of microchips and the lack of new vehicle production? I've only ever bought used, never owned a vehicle that wasn't 10+ years old. My assumption has always been that there's more people like me than than who have a new car every year.

We can shit out chips for a new model of cellphone, laptop or Xbox every 6 months, but we can't build cars? Something just isn't making sense with my dumb dumb brain.

A good locksmith can remove the all three lock cylinders, rekey them to match, and re-install them. They'll usually tell you how to get the ignition cylinder out if you want to save some money and do that part yourself.

A good locksmith can also measure (sometime just look at) the notches (called the "bittings") on your well worn key and "code cut" a new one that's just like a new factory key.

Call around and talk to a few locksmiths, which one can help you will be pretty obvious.

The way I understand it, the automakers use mostly an older platform of chips. Like, really old platform. If they were to upgrade the electronics in the cars to the newer platform of chips, they would have chips. They don't want to pay to play. They want chip manufacturers to continue to invest in production of old ass chips. That's why some auto makers are OK and some are not. Depends on the type of chip they use.

Something to consider is that there are a lot of dealerships. And they all sell enough cars (new and used) to stay open and employ salesmen, managers, lot attendants, etc.
Multiply that by all the cities in this big-ass country and people do, in fact, buy a lot of new cars.

I'm with you though. My 06 Tundra is the newest vehicle I've ever owned. **My wife does drive a '15 A3 we bought new. We've reached a place in life where we can afford to keep her in something newer and nice...as long as I drive jalopies.
Since I can work on cars, I'd rather have something older that I can modify/customize/repair than a payment. Plus, if/when I'm ready to move on, there's no payment to deal with; I have the title in hand.

It's also worth noting that a lot of our supply-chain breakdowns start at the ports and continue right into the trucking/logistics industry that are both vastly understaffed.

I wonder if there's a way to find out where/when a copy of your key was made just in case someone tries to impersonate you. The last time my vehicle was vandalized, it seemed as though someone had access to my key.

I walked into the only Sears in my area that was open this past weekend. Looked like the place was cleaned out with a lot of open space.

Asked a sales clerk if they were going out of business, he told me it was just "issues with the supply chain". Really??

I didn't think there were any Sears left. All the Sears around here are long gone.

The new xbox came out close to this time last year. It's still hard to find one.

I've been trying to replace an existing electrical gang box for a few months now. I finally asked someone at Lowes and he says they have been sold out most of the year for the type I need. A simple gang box and they don't have them. Amazing. The backlog from China is getting really bad. It will get worse before it gets better.

Also, I too thought Sears was dead.

I have heard of thief’s configuring some kind of device that when in reach, will copy the signal sent to your vehicle from your keyfob. So while you’re walking thru a parking lot to your truck and hit the unlock button on your keys, you could be programming a thief’s keyfob to your vehicle. Then when you’re not around…….

That's a little more technical than someone rolling up, copying your VIN and going to the dealer to have a spare key made for access to your vehicle, but yeah, I do agree that can happen.

I realize 'cold' is relative, based on local climes.

My heat is set to 65 year round. I flip off the switch to the burner in April and turn it back on in November. When it gets too cold, I add layers of clothing or a comforter on top of the bed blanket.

I might shop around for gas prices; I hear they're going up 30%.

Surprisingly, it's more cost effective to burn coal than wood. I wonder if anyone still has coal delivered?

Maybe taking a vacation? Where's that damn infraction thread? Hmmm....

You don't. You call a locksmith to install new barrels, probably. A good locksmith can rekey anything and tell you if something as simple as graphite will work. I've also had similar issues to you because the damn Homer employee somehow didn't insert the key fully, and it was cut off, so if I backed it off a little or pushed it in extra hard, it would turnover. You may want to consider taking your key back to whoever cut it and ask them to cut another, "this one literally doesn't work in my truck". ALWAYS TRY CHEAPEST OPTION FIRST :D

Call around. Get them to pin a key for IGN, then ask them to re-barrel the cylinder on the others. Or maybe re-key for the door, since that's the hardest two to get to, then rekey IGN and fuel door to that. Your call.

What are you looking for, I may have it? Old work or new? 1, 2, 3 gang or larger? Plastic OK, or are you looking for a metal 4-way? I'm not a licensed electrician, so I'm not gonna know what everything is called, but dad was a contractor who built houses so I know how to do my own stuff the right way and have quite a few spares leftover from remodels and household jobs. Happy to shoot something your way, cheapo snail mail if I've got it and you can't find it local.

It is. It hit 42 last night and my windows were all open. The great thing about my house is, it's well insulated and stays cool. The bad thing about my house is, it's well insulated and stays cool. Outside is a near perfect 72, in here it's warmer now that I've run the heat a while, but its dry and stuffy as a result. I hate heaters.

Already looked there. No info. Which is why I asked.

It was like $5 a key at the dealership where I had them cut. I was expecting a key that said TOYOTA, but I got a Walmart special ilco key. I'm not that worried about the two keys I had done up that don't quite work. I am worried about losing my only key for the ignition....

I'll call around to see if I can find some locksmiths.

Weird Toyota gave you an Ilco. I actually ordered 2 blanks from Toyota online before they started the dealership parts program thingy, then had my buddy's local Ace store cut them. His employee wouldn't do it (against their policy due to too many crap chinesium blanks destroying their machine), but he jumped in, knowing I only buy OEM everything, and cut it for me. Worked great.

But that said, I'd go to Homer or Wallyworld or anywhere else that cuts keys and get them to cut another for a couple bucks just to see if that's what it is.
